Who: Nikolas, Lucy, & Daphne.
What: A belated meeting.  And the beginning of some problems.
Where: The library.
When: Wednesday, 17 February.  Not long before curfew.
Rating/Warning: PG?  Maybe a bit higher if there is language involved later?  Who knowws.

Although he and Lucy had made some very indefinite plans to do "something" on Valentine's Day - even if they'd really only been together for a week - it had unfortunately not come to pass.  Friday night found Nikolas feeling a bit under the weather, and by Sunday morning he was still getting over a passing illness that had kept him dorm-ridden all through Saturday.  As much as he liked spending time with Lucy, he was tired, and still not entirely himself, and didn't really want to do anything but sleep on the holiday itself.

He'd seen her at Animagus training, at least.  It didn't feel right to skip out even if he still wasn't quite well.  But they'd decided to meet on Wednesday night.  The library seemed safe enough at the appointed time - not many people remained there so close to curfew.  At least not at this point in the year, when exams were a long way off.  It had been quite easy to find an unpopulated corner towards the back, near a collection of books he felt sure no one was going to feel a need to use right now.

Feigning studying, Nikolas waited with a random book open in front of him.

As useless a flobberworms were, the thought of a giant one was actually very disturbing to Nikolas, and he cringed visibly. "Ugh, don't say things like that, next thing we know I'll be having nightmares about enormous flobberworms interfering with Quidditch games, or something."

Still, his discomfort with the idea didn't last long. A moment later Nikolas was grinning again. Even though it was an entirely normal question for her to ask him, especially as he'd brought it up, for some reason he hadn't been prepared to answer it.

"Oh. The patronus? Yeah, oddly enough. My dad was haranguing me about it all summer until it finally started looking like something that wasn't a blob of smoke," he said slowly. "It was some sort of bird, though, a big one. We think maybe a hawk or a falcon of some kind?"

The sight of a flobberworm big enough to interrupt a Quidditch match was enough to stop Lucy from her slight giggling spree. Her hand covered her mouth slightly as she leaned forward in her seat slightly, more in Nikolas' direction. It was a rather horrifying thought, if one really thought about it.

Thankfully, the grin appearing on Nikolas' face was enough to distract her.

"That sounds pretty wicked," she told him, a grin appearing to match his. "It works for you, I think." Her eyes narrowed slightly as she looked him over. "I can see it, now, actually."

"Do you think so?" Nikolas replied lightly, inclining his head slightly and mirroring Lucy's forward lean. It was funny, how just being physically nearer to her now made him more aware of the fact that he would be equally happy to kiss her again as to keep talking. Or perhaps work out some kind of alternating system. Yes, maybe they ought to do something about that.

Not bothering to look down the aisle again, Nikolas leaned in closer and pressed his lips to her forehead. Maybe it was rude to interrupt a perfectly good conversation but it wasn't as though they couldn't get back to that. He moved his hands from the table and placed them at Lucy's knees as he leaned even nearer and placed another kiss at the corner of her mouth.

"I do-"

But that was all she managed to get in before Nikolas leaned in and kissed her forehead. A flush burned at her cheeks as her eyes briefly fluttered shut as the pressure of his lips against her skin. She hadn't expected that. She hadn't minded it, certainly. There was something quite exciting about being able to kiss or be kiss at any moment.

She could feel his hands on her knees as she lifted her head toward him just as he kissed the corner of her mouth. She moved her face slightly to meet him with a third kiss, this time her lips pressing against his.

Considering that Lucy had said she'd never done anything like this before last week, Nikolas thought that she was not nearly as shy as he'd expected. He still half expected her to pull away, or get nervous. If she was getting nervous, she was certainly making a good show of being at ease. He'd been about to make some sort of comment to this effect when her lips met his.

Though not really giving much thought to the fact that they were each in a separate chair, Nikolas was aware that it was somewhat difficult to get much closer, and that it was impeding how enjoyable this could be. In an attempt to pull her nearer, he placed a hand at her side, gently guiding her forward, and caressed her arm with the other. His head tilted slightly as he intensified the kiss, not pulling away this time.

Before last year Daphne never had a reason to enter the library, whenever she needed a book she usually owled her mother to send it to her. However, since Professor Slughorn took over the Slytherin Head of House she's found him very understanding of her need to have a permanent pass to the restricted section. On top of that, she never realized this but Madam Pince kept a very clean, and organized library, and she made sure it was always quiet. Furthermore, it was a brilliant excuse to escape the Slytherin common room.

Today, Daphne was seeking out a book and an excuse to leave the common room. After explaining the book she sought to Madam Pince, the woman pointed her in the proper direction before running off to intercept a group of third years who decided to eat chocolate while doing their homework. Steps were quiet, as she slipped down one aisle, blue gaze skimming the titles of the books as she walked past. Reaching the end of the aisle without success, she figured the book must be on the other side of shelf.

Rounding the shelving slowly, gaze settled on a sight that Daphne never expected (and after everything she has been through, there wasn't much that she didn't expect anymore). She remained quiet, as she stared at Nikolas Vaisey and Lucy Elkins snogging in the library. A finely sculpted brow arched as she could feel the prickling of jealousy on the back of her neck. It started in a low rumble at the pit of her stomach, and instantly flared up and coursed through her body. Daphne knew the feeling very well, but for once she couldn't place WHY she was jealous.

She didn't realize it, but her nails were digging into the spine of a book, and she decided it was time to announce her presence. Tipping the book off the shelf, it crashed to the floor with a loud BANG. Head lowered as gaze flickered into a piercing glare. If looks could kill this one would be the death of them both.

"Huh." She stated, ice laced in her tone, as she looked at the pair.

The crashing sound instantly drew Lucy away from the kiss. Her body tensed in reaction to the banging noise as her hands gripped the bottom of the seat. Her eyes flickered toward Nikolas for a moment, her brows furrowed in question. Having been so caught up in the moment, she momentarily forgotten they were not quite alone, and certainly not in a private place. Her cheeks grew hot as the unmistakable sound of another person's voice caught her attention.

So they had a visitor.

Lucy looked slowly to the other girl, quite aware of the face that she had just caught in a rather compromising position in the back of the library. Having spent enough time in this exact spot, books sprawled out and notes being taken, she had also come across her fair share of surprises. She never thought she'd be one of them, though.

Her eyes took in the other girl. Older, Lucy recognized. A Slytherin, she knew for sure. What her name was, she couldn't recall. She figured she should have said something, anything, but frankly, there were no words that came to her at that moment.

Instead, she looked to Nikolas.

When he heard the books crashing and the voice of a sudden spectator, Nikolas' first thought was that Madam Pince had run across them and was about to deal out one of her usual verbal reprimands. And probably kick them out of the library. Neither case really phased him. Still, Lucy had obviously noticed as well, and when she tensed and pulled away, Nikolas had no choice but to follow suit.

Leaning back in his seat and running a hand through his hair for lack of anything better to do with his hands, he looked down the aisle. Having been prepared for the sight of an angry librarian, it was understatement to say that Nikolas was shocked to find Daphne standing there instead. He'd seen her angry before, and upset, and annoyed, but he'd never seen her look quite this...vicious seemed to be the right word.

He felt a cruel knot begin to form in the pit of his stomach, but it only lasted a few moments. This was certainly embarrassing, and could only mean that everything was about to get a lot more complicated. But just then, Nikolas was surprised to find he didn't really care about any of that. If anything, he just felt a bit guilty - though towards whom, he wasn't quite sure. Maybe both of them, maybe his family, maybe something else entirely.

His face slackened, and he blinked a few times, trying to clear his mind. "Oh..." A few dozen obscenities ran through his mind, but when he opened his mouth again, all Nikolas managed was, "Daphne?"

Jaw was clenched so tightly, she didn't even notice the pain shooting through her mouth until it was like a blinding flash over her feelings. Everything went numb for a moment before slamming her with a wave of anger. What was scary about this side of Daphne was that despite the anger and... jealousy running through her, she kept this eerie air of calm about her. Too calm. Too quiet and too unmoving.

Daphne was no longer looking at Lucy, instead her gaze settled upon Nikolas, especially when his face slackened and he seemed to be reaching for something to say. The stare remained on him for a few more beats, a few beats that she hoped would be his most uncomfortable time. She prayed that he was feeling something horrible considering she was actually feeling something.

The lack of emotion across her face made it very difficult for either of them (including herself) to actually understand what was going through her mind. Was she mad? Was she sad? Was she jealous?

Finally, Daphne managed to regain her composure. Turning on her heels, brown hair was tossed over her shoulder as she headed for the exit of the library. She was disgusted... or was she shocked? Daphne didn't know WHAT she was feeling, but she knew if she stuck around in the library any longer she was going to lose it.

Some moments could best be described as awkward. Having become accostomed to being the quieter, more introverted among her peers, Lucy wasn't quite used to social situations as it was. At the exact moment Lucy looked toward Nikolas she knew that she had found herself in the middle of something she wasn't quite sure she'd be able to understand. She looked down toward her lap as she wrung her hands in her lap.

She wanted to say something. A part of her felt as if she had to defend herself in someway, to prove to this girl that whatever it was she thought she saw, it hadn't happened. But as Lucy's forehead creased in confusion, she realized she hadn't really done anything wrong.

Or at least, that was what she thought.

When the girl turned away, Lucy looked back toward Nikolas.

"What just happened?" she asked, fully aware of how dumb she might have just sounded.

As he watched Daphne's quickly retreating figure disappear around a shelf, Nikolas shook his head slowly. He knew perfectly well what had just happened, and what very likely would be happening within the next few days, or possibly hours. This had been a very stupid thing to do. The library? How had that ever seemed like a good plan?

"I...'m not really sure," he admitted. It was truer than he thought at first. Daphne's reaction had confused him, though he was sure it shouldn't have. She wasn't one for explosions, at least not in public.

For a moment, he thought now was the time he'd have to explain what was going on to Lucy, and hope that she wouldn't be angry. But he knew the likelihood of that was low, and so, instead, he looked over at her apologetically.

"But I think maybe we ought to go. Do you mind?"

Lucy bit at her upper lip as she looked back at Nikolas. She could sense that there was something he wasn't telling her, or perhaps something he wanted to tell her. She wondered, briefly, who this girl was in relation to Nikolas. Part of her wasn't sure she wanted to know what she had just witnessed, or partook in (if that was the case). Instead of pushing further, she nodded her head slowly.

"Of course not," she told him. "It's getting a bit late, anyway."

It seemed silly, looking back on her reply, that she seemed to sound so normal following what just happened. Though she wasn't sure she understood what the big deal was. It had only been a kiss, and it wasn't as offensive as some of the other things she had come across in the back of the library. But then, she clearly didn't know everything.
