Take it easy, Vanya's doctor had said. Rest and recuperate. No stress. That was easier said than done in this family. Five doubted Vanya had ever experienced a stress-free day that wasn't muted by medications from the old man. Her orders to stay home and do nothing almost felt like their second biggest challenge since the apocalypse. At least they had the bare bones of an actual home now. Their new apartment was quiet, and suburban. Some government official had expedited the process to get them a place to stay, so at least this weird-as-hell city took care of its citizens. Five would have looked after Vanya regardless. The only family that had was each other here until their siblings arrived, and it's not like Five fought tooth and nail to save them and never see them again. They had spent more time together than they had in years. It was mundane activities for now -- choosing what went where in the apartment, cooking meals, household chores. Whatever Vanya couldn't yet handle, Five would do for the two of them. It was even normal, sort of, if everyone had a shy sister who caused the apocalypse and needed some rehabilitation in an off-the-grid world. It was kind of nice, actually. But there were serious things the two of them still needed to talk about, and Five had put off the discussion until Vanya was on the mend. She was home now, safe now, and Five knew he could calm her down if anything got out of hand. Now or never, he supposed. "I don't want to upset you," Five started, raising his eyes to meet hers. They had finished dinner at the small dining room table, the plates still scattered across the tablecloth. Cleanup could come later. "But I think we need to talk about your powers at some point." |
