The mistletoe, while nothing new, was decidedly more annoying this year. While some part of Oikawa wanted to enjoy the fun of it, another part just wasn’t actually interested in kissing anyone. Maybe he’d been a bit spoiled, by having a relationship that managed to last longer than a couple of months, or maybe he really had found his focus again, his drive. It felt good to not feel guilty if he stayed after practice late, or went back after dinner. In a way, being single was freeing in a way he hadn’t really been able to actually be at Seijoh, since he didn’t have such easy access to the courts. It could have been a good thing, maybe it was a great thing, or it was just his way of slowly grinding himself into the ground while he tried to one up guys younger than him that had already surpassed him.
Of course, that had nothing to do with the offending plants that seemed to appear out of thin air when you absolutely did not want them to.
He’d warned Iwaizumi. He really had. His Ace had been fairly intent on not actually dating anyone or showing any interest in anyone. Oikawa had once thought he’d cracked the code that was Iwa-chan when he figured out that he wasn’t interested in girls but then, suddenly, he didn’t actually seem very interested in boys either. It was baffling. Oikawa had spent the majority of his high school years dating some girl or another, feeling upset when they broke up, then dating someone else.
Now, though, he was presented with the prospect that he might kiss Iwaizumi. It wasn’t the first time he’d thought about it, and it wasn’t likely to be the last. There was some part of his heart that had probably loved the guy since they were toddlers. A tiny part. The size of a pea. Why else would he put up with the abuse? It was stupid to feel a little bit excited about it, the chance to kiss Iwaizumi and it not actually mean something, to see if he felt anything with no strings attached. A kiss that wouldn’t automatically ruin their years of friendship if Iwaizumi hated it. He could do it, and Iwaizumi couldn’t even be mad at him about it, because he asked for it! It felt almost too good to be true, and that…was likely because it was.
He was ready. Beyond ready. And yet, Iwaizumi always had a way to knock him back down, didn’t he?
“What do you mean?” He asked as Iwaizumi came more into view and then it hit him. Iwaizumi had already kissed someone. He’s just kissed someone. Oikawa had absolutely no reason to feel offended or betrayed by this bit of information, but, well, he was a drama queen or whatever. “Oh! Seriously?! I got out of line for lunch and you already grabbed some random person?” He huffed, cheeks puffing out for a second before he crossed his arms, sending Iwaizumi a glare that held nothing on the ones the other boy could provide.
“Who was it? Bet you liked it.” He teased, but with a hint of bitterness in his tone that didn’t quite match the smile he was able to put on.
