If there was one thing Miya was as obsessed with as he was with skateboarding, it was cats. Even people who didn’t know him could tell from his infamous hoodie or gloves, maybe the stickers he had plastered over his phone case or the designs on his skateboard. He didn’t always talk about it, but being with cats was usually easier than being with people. It was why he spent so much time at Pause, especially when it was so close to his school. Sure the employees there were a little weird… but they were Reki and Langa’s age and always nice to him. It made coming back a no-brainer. The school year had just started, but already Miya found himself skating over after class a few times a week. Maybe he'd help unload a box or two of new treats or whatever else the shop needed. It turned out he just liked having time where nobody had any expectations from him. He didn’t have to be such a jerk to keep himself feeling safe. He didn’t have to worry about Reki being an idiot or Cherry acting like a parent now that they were all stuck here together. Not that he minded any of those things, really. He’d probably be more upset if any of that changed... The point was that he liked going for himself. It was mid-afternoon when he'd propped his skateboard up against the door, already smiling at the café girl who looked so happy whenever anyone came in. There typically weren’t many visitors yet when the other kids had their after school activities, so Miya headed straight to the back without expecting anyone else to be there. And there someone was there, and Miya stopped in his tracks. There was a boy his age, and maybe they went to the same school although Miya hadn’t seen him around. One of the cats wandered over to Miya’s foot, and he picked her up before heading over to the couch where even more cats had flopped over to be petted. If he was this popular it had to mean the guy wasn’t a slime – that was promising. “They like you.” He hadn’t meant to sound so surprised when he’d said it, but even the more tentative cats had come out. They usually only did that for Miya, and not often when there were others around. Maybe he should have been jealous, but he just felt impressed. “Nova doesn’t usually come out for just anyone. What’s your name?” |
