He would need to tell Lan Zhan eventually. A-Yuan had been a wonderful distraction from the mess he had left behind; a world of misery created by his hands. No matter how far Wei Wuxian ran away from it, he was still haunted by that night. It surprised him some days that Lan Zhan put up with him, still remembering him as the young kid who came to Cloud Recesses just to show off and tease him into friendship. Part of him was still that person, but he was different now. Irreparable in more ways than his zhiji knew. He grabbed onto the front of his robes at the memory, watching A-Yuan stack blocks into a tower beside him. He was so lucky to have found a family that still loved him no matter what. A child and a partner. The two most important people in his life – and one of them would never know he was anything other than a doting parent full of love. Life here was so calm compared to what they left. There was no need for night-hunting, and he hadn’t carried Suibian on him for quite some time. Those were the only tells that he had now, really. But Lan Zhan was never rough with him or asked to fight. He never asked Wei Wuxian for anything that wasn’t considerate and gentle. He deserved to know the truth. “Do you have any secrets, A-Yuan?” Their resident four-year-old knocked a block down, and Wei Wuxian managed to uncurl his hand from his clothes to pick it up. “Nuh-uh,” A-Yuan mumbled, watching Wei Wuxian put the block on the opposite side of the tower. “No secrets at home.” Wei Wuxian couldn’t hold back a laugh. So serious. So serious like Papa. “Ah, you’re so smart. You sound like a little Lan already.” Wei Wuxian grinned and reached out to tap A-Yuan’s nose. “No gossiping in Cloud Recesses,” he recited as A-Yuan gigged. “They would have loved you there. Such a polite child. But I like you here more.” He would tell Lan Zhan eventually, before it was too late and he could know what he was getting into by spending his life with a demonic cultivator. It wasn’t the end of the world, really. They could still raise A-Yuan and be pathetically lovesick about each other until the end of time. It wouldn’t have to change anything at all if Lan Zhan didn’t hate him for it. This world was full of spiritual magic too. Maybe they would figure out a way to fix him. If not… there was always next year’s wishes. |
