Ignis wasn't the best at not keeping busy. Whether it was because he just naturally liked to be busy, or a lifetime of having a constant, strict schedule had ingrained some sort of need to always have something to in him, he wasn't entirely sure. Certainly, he enjoyed having free time, the ability to decide his own schedule and not have to worry about an entire kingdom, or the matter of keeping everyone fed and well and as whole as possible, or — and he refused to dwell on it for more than a moment — the swiftly darkening and increasingly demon-infested world. To find himself with enough time and space between all of that now left him occasionally restless, for all that he tried to keep his days full.
He spent time with his friends, thoroughly and wonderfully distracted by the new shift in their relationships. He spent time buried in books about magic, fascinated now that he had the time to study all he wanted. He cooked, visited neighbors, went into town.
The one thing he hadn't done was pick his violin up. It had been over a year now since he'd gotten it back, the result of a wish, and there were still too many emotions tied into it that he wasn't quite sure he was ready to untangle. It had, of course, been originally lost when Insomnia fell, and like everything else, he had had to accept that. Until it was sitting in his room one day, the case just as he remembered it, and for a moment he almost hadn't believed it could be real. Until he'd pulled it out and was hit with a flood of memories — it had been his father's, and his grandmother's before that, and holding it again, as old and comforting as he remembered it being, had been a lot.
He'd just gotten his vision back, too, and found that readjusting to being able to see after a couple of years of being blind had been almost more than he could cope with. He'd made sure the violin was stored properly, tucked safely away, as his attention was focused on other things. He thought of it more recently, sometimes, promised himself he'd pick it up and get back into practice, and yet he hadn't. There was much he still needed to sort through, he knew there was, but starting with his family…
It was hard.
He did miss music, though, now that he had an abundance of time for such things. If he hadn't already sworn himself as Noct's royal advisor he might have been able to make a career of it, or so he'd been told. It had never been a serious thought for him, as much as he loved playing for family and friends. So one day when he was picking up a few things in town and he spotted a violin in the window of one of the antique shop windows, he found himself with one impulsively bought instrument half an hour later after he'd taken the time to examine it. It was a beautiful thing, likely worth much more than the store was asking for it, and he'd spent half that time convincing the owner to to let him pay closer to what it was worth.
When he got home, it was with one arm full of groceries, the other holding the case protectively against his side until he could settle it safely on the kitchen table while he put things away. He had just finished and was about to slip away somewhere quiet when Prompto came through, and he could hardly ignore him, no matter how eager he was to try out the new violin. He set the case back on the table, a warm smile on his face as he greeted his friend.
Boyfriend.
"Prompto. Busy today?" he asked, stepping forward and not quite reaching for him. Ignis was still figuring out the new physical boundaries with Prompto and Gladio, and while Prompto had never seemed to have a problem with physical affection before, after how anxious he'd been recently the last thing Ignis wanted was to misstep somewhere.
