Going from grossly in love to just friends again had been brutal. Scanlan had panicked just a little bit at first, because this sort of thing did happen to their group occasionally. He hadn’t remembered visiting the Feywild the first time they’d returned to the prime material plane either, and all it had taken was a Greater Restoration Spell to bring them back. Luckily Pike hadn’t lost her abilities at the same time as her memories. Only this time when she’d cast it… there was no change. It had worked, but it hadn’t jogged her memory. Not panicking still remained at the top of Scanlan’s list of things to try, even days later. It was difficult not to miss the relationship they had formed together. He had gone from soulmate right back to slightly obnoxious friend in her eyes. But it was temporary, so that would have to be alright for now. Besides, he had won her affection before, and he would do it again! He could even do a better job this time around, too. That was the one small blessing in having her forget some of their worst moments together: how Scanlan had left the group without giving them a chance to convince him otherwise, the awful way he had dismissed her power in saving his life. If this was going to work, he had to be honest from the very beginning. But honest in small bites so that Pike wouldn't be completely knocked for a loop to hear of the insanity they had been through. There was just so much to cover since their adventures in Kraghammer, and he knew earning her trust back would take time… He had to start somewhere. One of the biggest revelations they'd encountered after Kraghammer had to have been his daughter. Hopefully this time around, the reveal wouldn’t include any attempted murder. “Her name is Kaylie,” Scanlan said, casting a minor illusion of a cheeky-looking brunette gnome just above his hand. “I told her where we were going, but not to try to follow. She’s a tough kid. We met her in Emon, actually.” It was a strange memory, tinted with regret and embarrassment, although Scanlan grinned through it as if it were only pleasant. The image flashed and the girl suddenly held a flute, lost in playing. “She didn’t like me very much at first. Uh, well, she tried to kill me. But I got through to her.” The grin faded into something more humble, and he looked up at Pike with open curiosity. Pike hadn’t been truly shocked learning about Kaylie the first time either given Scanlan’s history with women. He wondered if things would be different now. Better? Or worse? |
