Five had never experienced a comfortable life before. Thirteen years in Umbrella Academy bootcamp hadn’t prepared him for forty five more wandering a wasteland – though the lessons did come in handy when the Commission decided he was worth recruiting. He had always done what was required of him to achieve his goals, even when that involved scraping away all morality that might have made him a decent person. Any decision he had made had never been comfortable. But his reasons had somehow led him here, to this new home with Vanya and a more age-appropriate appearance. It was confusing to have options now that didn’t involve risk of life or limb. Did he want to stay in with Vanya today? Did he want that coffee from the café down the street? Would he be called in to Stark Industries, or would he have more time to spend on his own research? They shouldn't have been difficult choices, but Five had found that comfort in general was a luxury he wasn’t accustomed to indulging. Some days holding onto Vanya’s hand was like walking a tightrope above the calamity inside his head: a thousand alarms ringing below them. Where was the Commission? When were they coming? Did they have his family? “They should have arrived by now,” he told nobody one morning, eyes fixated outside the kitchen window. The coffee mug before him was empty, though Five hadn’t bothered with breakfast beyond that. He must have calculated something wrong when he'd jumped from the auditorium with his family. He wouldn’t have left any of them behind. He wouldn’t have left Vanya behind, at least. Therein was his mistake. Five may have focused so much on saving one life, that the rest of his siblings' whereabouts had been determined by a roll of the dice. Luther, Allison, Klaus... they could all have been lost elsewhere. The Commission would find them, or maybe they already had. Or maybe this was another one of those tightrope thoughts when Five forgot to keep his gaze focused on what was ahead of him. He pushed away from the table suddenly, stepping through space and appearing back in Vanya’s room where she was still huddled up within the blankets. Safe and sound. Real and whole. She didn't look so different from when he'd left her earlier. The sheets only rustled softly when he slipped in beside her. Vanya could become a small, wrapped up thing when she slept, and Five didn’t try to unravel her. He did watch her though, eyes soft as if her breaths seemed to sooth him. She was alright. She was still in his life, and that meant hope was as well. It would have to be enough for now. |
