This place was amazing and nothing would change Sokka's mind otherwise. It was big, there was an actual kitchen to cook FOOD in, and beds. Real beds. Now, okay, back in the South Pole, they slept on penguin seal pelts or whatever so he shouldn't be spoiled or anything, but these were niiiice. It was where Sokka had been for the past half hour or so until Katara came to the doorway to stare at him and tap her toe in annoyance.
"Sokka, you're supposed to be helping! You're lucky I got people to donate some furniture, now get off your butt and help get it in here!"
Katara was almost always haughty with him for one reason or another, usually because he wasn't doing something he was supposed to… or was doing something he wasn't supposed to and, really, which one of them was the older sibling here? Flipping into his stomach, he propped his chin in his palm and smirked in the face of danger. "I am helping, Katara! I'm testing out this bed, making sure it's up to code!" Oh, if looks could kill, he would be dead many times over.
"SOKKA! I MEAN IT, GET UP NOW!" Bending the water from her canteen, she used the water whip move and caught the tip of Sokka's nose with it before turning to stomp back out of the room grumbling about grounding him. Honestly, was she the only adult minded one around? It felt like it sometimes.
"OW KATARA!" His hands flew up to his face when the water snapped against his nose, pushing himself up to his knees to toss his boomerang back at Katara, but it clattered against the doorframe as she fumed off. She probably would have caught it and threw it back at him anyway and he'd be in double the pain. That week he was the freaking Avatar was the best, really. He could at least TRY to hold his own against Katara then. Sibling rivalry at its finest. Well… him and Katara had it together better than…
"She's right, you know. You're no good to anyone in here being a useless oaf. I'm still not sure why my brother tolerates you so thoroughly, he could do so much better." He met Azula's sharp eyes now when he abruptly stopped rubbing his face, dropping his arms down to his sides in some sense of defeat. Of course she had to come say something.
"Ya know, Azula, I dunno. It must be that I am so good, he just can't get enough of me." Heavy implications of his relationship with Zuko here aside, he was getting tired of justifying himself to Azula. Yet, Sokka still believed that everyone, and he meant everyone had the capacity to change. "Or maybe you should try mingling with us commoners more often, you might like it."
Azula never gave much away in her expressions unless she was pushed beyond her tolerance. She was a puzzle with pieces that changed with her mood and therefore impossible to assemble. He'd been trying for months now, if for no other reason than Zuko. But the more he tried, the less he seemed to be able to work out, which was more than likely how Azula wanted it anyway.
"Hmmmm... No, I don't think so," she replied after a beat, examining her nails as if they were suddenly the most interesting thing in the world. "Unlike our dear Zuzu, I've kept myself to a certain standard," she placed a hand very regally to her chest, her smile at first only slightly unsettling until she looked over at him again. "Besides, I still have plans to see through. I've no time to play games with the likes of you." And as quickly as her look sharpened, it smoothed out again into something more condescending. Snapping her fingers at him, Azula turned to leave. "Come now, this manual labor won't do itself."
And just as quickly as she was there, Azula was gone again and Sokka was left blinking after her. "How is she still so… Azula?" Because 'scary' or 'terrifying' or even 'incredibly concerning' didn't do enough to describe Azula when she was all of those things plus. True that she hadn't done anything drastic since she showed up… but he had the unsettling feeling here of being lulled into a false sense of security.
Okay, okay! He was getting up. Shuffling off the bed, he retrieved his boomerang from the floor with a sigh. What he didn't like most was that no matter how much he tried to convince himself otherwise, whenever Azula picked at him like this, she left behind doubt in his mind. It was already difficult to feel up to par when your friends and sister were so talented and amazing and you… are still just the guy with the boomerang. Maybe that seemed like he was focusing too much on physical ability, but it was more than that. And now? They were… trying to be… comfortable? They didn't really discuss actual long term plans yet besides eventually having to go back and deal with Ozai, but he didn't even really know what that meant at this point since Aang went poof AGAIN.
Azula had a way of getting him caught up in his head with just a few words. Now he was the one, mumbling some to himself as he made his way back outside to help. They must have picked it up from Hadoka, who had a tendency to mutter to himself about battle strategy and any number of other topics. Which was an unfortunate habit right now, with his eyes on the ground instead of in front of him, making him run right into someone in the main doorway he hoped wasn't Azula.
He still yelled, "I'm sorry, don't kill me!" In the eventuality it was Azula… or Katara.
