Young Hogwarts - Severus and Lucius I
Lucius Malfoy sat in the Slytherin Common Room, long after the rest of his house was abed, staring into the fire in the grate, but not seeing it. His mind was on other things, most particularly the message in his hands, which his parents had sent this day notifying him of his betrothal to one Narcissa Black, to be held after the young lady in question left Hogwarts, which would be a year after Lucius did as he was now in his seventh year at the school.
Damn. Damn, damn and again damn. The thought of marrying Narcissa did nothing for Lucius - she did nothing for Lucius. Not that he disliked her, no. He just didn't particularly like her. And he most certainly did not love her. So why not go along with his parents wishes, produce a son and live happily ever after, or a reasonable faximile thereof? He was rich, he was handsome, Malfoy Manor was virtually his now, his parents were never there. So, what was the problem?
The problem was a certain someone by the name of Severus Snape - Lucius' friend and confidante - and whom he had been unable to get out of his mind ever since the school year began. He had not seen Severus all summer, due to their disparate schedules, and on that first day of school, when he did behold the boy, his world had changed and was never to be the same again. He had obviously gotten some sort of growth spurt, he was taller, and leaner, his hair was longer, silkier, and his eyes seemed to smoulder with some sort of secret interal fire. Lucius was mesmerized, in spite of himself.
Did he tell Severus this? Of course not. But sometimes it was difficult not to touch him, especially when they sat together, which was rather common. It just made his betrothal all the more difficult to accept, when he wished to plumb the depths of these feelings for Severus, and discover what was actually there.
He'd been with boys before, discreetly, of course. Other Slytherins, naturally. But no one knew; there were rumours, of course, none substantiated. He couldn't afford to have it known, after all he was the heir to the house of Malfoy, and his father had always cautioned discretion - he would know, having a longterm mistress himself.
Lucius sighed, and shifted his position upon the couch. What was he going to do? The thought of touching Narcissa made him ill. Whereas the thought of kissing Severus...... Don't go down that road, he cautioned himself, there only lies trouble, and heartache....
Severus had been at the library, he had found an interesting potions book he had been reading it on the way down to the Slytherin commonroom. He opened, without looking where he was going the door and walked over to the couches while reading on, not even noticing Lucius when he sat down on the couch opposite the blond's.
Lucius became aware instantly of the other's presence, glancing up with a start. But he kept his cool, contained his thumping heart, and to all outward appearances nothing was amiss. "Severus, you're out late," he commented softly, not wishing to break the ambiance of the quiet room, nor rouse anyone else. "Have a late date?" He didn't think so, but he felt compelled to ask, for some reason.
Severus looked up, trying to hide the fact that Lucius had startled him. “Date?” he asked not sure what the other Slytherin was talking about. “Me?” He knew he must sound like a fool just able to make one word sentences. “I was in the library, studying.” He tried but got the feeling he was a fool, what else would he have been doing in the library?
Lucius was too distracted to notice exactly what Severus was saying, other than he had been in the library, not dating. "Look at this," the distressed boy said, handing him the parchment with the dread pronouncement, wishing that he could simply disappear from the face of the earth, so his parents could not find him to force him to this foul deed.
Severus took the note accidentally brushing his fingers against Lucius’ hand. He had heard the tone of his friend’s words so he assumed before reading it that this was not good news. ’Narcissa Black.’ He thought knowing that this girl was a good ‘catch’ not that he himself was practically attracted to her. “You are getting married.” He stated as he returned to note to his friend, his voice even waiting for what was to come next, wondering why this was such bad news.
"So they tell me," Lucius replied, in an aggrieved tone. It wasn't unexpected, of course, but it was certainly unwanted. "I don't want to," he blurted out. He turned stricken eyes to his friend, speechless, which in and of itself was indicative of his frame of mind.
Severus looked at his friend when he heard the tone of voice, that wasn’t like Lucius. “Your parents will force you?” He asked, he already could guess the answer but he just wanted to give the older Slytherin the chance to get it all off his chest.
"Oh, they have their ways," Lucius said dryly, "nothing overt. Just the if you want to live the life you lead now, you will do as we say, that sort of thing. In other words, cooperate or the money disappears." And for Lucius to be cut off from his money would be very serious indeed.
Severus looked down at the owl again before returning it to Lucius. “That is blackmail.” He stated simply, he knew that some parents would do anything to get their children to do what they want them too. “Why don’t you tell them you want to marry some other girl?” He asked, he wasn’t even sure if the blond had a girlfriend, he usually didn’t pay much attention to things of the heart.
"Because then they will want to know who," Lucius replied simply, "and there is no one else. Then they will ask why don't I simply marry Narcissa, and how will I explain it to them then? My father.... knows about me.... he will tell me that I can have all the toys that I want as long as I produce an heir, and never let anyone know about my.... shameful secrets." He shook his head, not realizing what he had just confessed to his friend.
For a moment or two Severus just looked at Lucius, he usually was very bright but the cryptic words of his friend took him some time to decipher. “Your…” He started but then stopped the question he was about to ask. “Oh…” was his not so intelligent comment as he realized that the rumours about Lucius being gay seemed to be true. He looked at his friend and wondered if it would be nice to be kissed by the blond, he mentally shook his head took get that thought out of his mind, he didn’t want to be kissed by a boy, not even Lucius Malfoy, he was in love with Lily… right?
Lucius found himself staring at Severus' lips, his body involuntarily swaying toward him. "I am," he admitted, waiting to hear if the next words out of the other's mouth were to be censure, or approbation. Would he be horrified? Would he be shamed? Or would he possibly be..... interested?
But no, how could he be interested, when he still held a torch for Lily, didn't he, even though that relationship had gone all wrong, and for the most idiotic of reasons? How could he possibly think that this lovely boy would be interested in..... him?
Severus knew that kissing Lucius would be asking for trouble, the blond’s marriage was already planned, sure he had just admitted to be gay but still… His black hairs fell over his eyes as he tried not to look at those inviting lips and part of him was really glad that Lucius was sitting on the other couch and not on the couch with him. It was just part of him that was glad, the nagging little part that also wanted to kiss the older Slytherin was disappointed that the other was sitting so far away.
“How are you going to tell your boyfriend that you are going to get married?” He asked carefully, this was him being a good friend of course, it wasn’t that he wanted to know if there was a boyfriend, right?
"Boyfriend?" Lucius was confused at the question for a moment, then realized that Severus had made an assumption. That he had a current boyfriend which precluded his wishing to be married. That was far from the case, of course.
"Oh, no, I don't have one. That's not why.... I mean, it is... but it's not...." Why was English suddenly not his first language? He tried to straighten out his words so that they made sense. "I don't want to marry Narcissa because I don't love her, and I don't want to kiss her or touch her.... not the way a wife should be kissed and touched..... Severus, have you ever been kissed?" Lucius stared intently at Severus' lips, and in later years, he couldn't even say why he had asked that question, but at the time it was the most important question in the world.
Severus wasn’t sure why in the first place he had even wanted to kiss Lucius and that now when the blond said that he didn’t have a boyfriend he was relieved. He wasn’t gay after all, right? He liked girls like Lily! Or did he? The only girl he had ever wanted to be close to was Lily and when Lucius just asked if he ever had been kissed he wondered why he and Lily never kissed? Not that he would assume his oldest friend would ever kiss him but they had been together often enough to have tried, but they never had, he had never even thought of kissing her.
“No, I haven’t.” He said carefully hoping that Lucius wouldn’t laugh at him or tease him. For a moment he thought what the foursome from hell would do with that little bit of information, he could almost hear the voices of Black and Potter teasing him.
