Her conversation with Aaron had gotten Selby thinking. Perhaps she did monopolize the dorm room. It was difficult for the girl to gain any perspective while she was involved in an argument, but as soon as she'd had some time to calm down, her head filled with doubts. Maybe she was being unreasonable. Maybe Becca really did mind Selby's demands, only she didn't care enough to argue. As Selby marched towards the Rec Center, notebooks pressed to her chest, she tried not to dwell on what her roommate and her boyfriend might be saying about her. They probably never gave her a second thought, she told herself. Whether that was better or worse than the alternative, she really didn't know.
Settling herself on the edge of a sofa facing one of the center's three televisions, Selby hunted around for the remote. After finally yanking it out from between two cushions, she scowled and started flipping through channels. She'd stay in the RC for an hour. It was an excellent plan because it would give Becca some time alone (or with Aaron) and it would force Selby to get that much better acquainted with the white noise that came with human crowds. It was important that she keep forcing herself to socialize. None of her instructors said it like that exactly, but she understood the sentiments. With a determined sigh, she flipped the channel once more to stop on a documentary about hyenas. Or life in the savanna. At any rate, something that didn't involve human beings.
She drew her knees up onto the sofa, careful to keep her boots dangling off the edge as not to dirty the upholstery, and smiled to herself. An hour of this would be nothing. Her heart nearly shot out of her chest every time someone so much as passed by her sofa, but... It was important to think positively. She could do this.
