Who: Mahiru Shirota + Renzo Shima
What: Confession
When: April 21st around 7pm
Where: Stone Brick Park
Status: Closed, Finished
Warnings: And they were roommates (Oh my God they were roommates)

The golden stretches far and wide, below the hedge maze glows with a purplish tint. Sunset had almost fallen upon Eerie Harbor. Mahiru Shirota never found himself to be the overly romantic type, confessing as the sun set and the day ended underneath a tree on the top of a hill. Stone Brick Park was quiet, he'd found the place while flying home one day. It was place he continued to return to when he needed to think, just to get away from the chaos that was living with two vampires. Most everyone was down below playing in the hedge maze, not on the hill above. This was a place the two of them could be alone.

The eve leaned against the single tree that stood atop the hill, half-sitting, half-squatting. The time on his phone indicated it was almost 7, the meeting time he'd decided upon to meet up with Renzo. He couldn't sit still, mind and heart racing a million miles a minute. Nothing about this was going to be easy. Mahiru had rehearsed it a million times in the mirror, over and over again. He found the words he'd tried to memorize starting to slip away. This was really happening. Shima was out of the hospital, and he was on his way here. Once he said it, everything would change forever. They'd either be more than friends or...well, Mahiru didn't want to think about what would happen otherwise.

Breathe.

He took a deep breath, then swallowed the lump that had formed in his throat.

The worst thing he could say is no.

Jabber had suggested that he bring food to soothe out the conversation. Deciding on what to get had been tricky, seeing as he wanted it to special but not overbearingly so. This wasn't a date or anniversary, but...all that time that had passed in between meeting and getting to know each other...it shouldn't just be something thoughtless. He'd cooked for Renzo countless times, he knew he liked Western food. No, this had to be different somehow, memorable. But not too fancy.

It hit him at precisely three forty five in the morning. Mahiru got up to use to restroom, seeing the mess in the living room of two vampires playing solitaire. It wasn't until he stepped on an empty cup of noodles container that the idea struck him. September 15th was his official release day from the facility, and the very say he'd met Shima in person. He'd gone out shopping and come through a window on his lead. They'd fought for a solid ten minutes before putting the groceries away. In order to have a healthy mind in classes, you needed a healthy, full stomach.

Dorm room staple.

Mahiru sighed. How'd I end up falling for him again? That was a question he'd been asking himself for weeks. Likewise, the eve had never been nervous about something in his whole life. Okay, there was that time when Licht and Lawless got kidnapped and were gonna die in twenty four hours but that didn't feel nearly as bad as he did right now.

"I'm just telling him how it is." Mahiru mumbled to himself. "I'm just telling him--" He paused turning to see Shima approaching, he stood to greet him, cup of noodles in hand. "Hey, glad you could make it. Thanks for coming." He held out one of the Cup of Noodles to Shima, offering a smile. Maybe the smile would hide how nervous he felt inside? "Don't know if you ate before coming, but you like this kind, right? Something to munch on while we talk."

Shima was worried. He'd been restless the whole night and the bus ride here. No one ever set a date and said they wanted to talk for a good reason. At least I don't have the awkward travel here with him..? He tried to see some good sides. Shima had his suspicions, he'd had them ever since he first saw Mahiru after he'd woken up. There was no way Mahiru couldn't like him. Not after the soft expressions he'd made and the blushing he'd done back then.

Shima walked slowly through the park, his mind was abuzz with the conversation he'd had with Rin. He knew that he didn't want Mahiru to leave him. Even if he acted like a roomba or was an ass at time, Shima didn't want him to leave. Still... Why the hell is this so nerve-wracking... He rubbed his face. His other arm was still in a sling, but he could walk perfectly fine now. That's what gave him the confidence to be able to get here on his own. Not that he was alone. His K'rik was disassembled in his bag which hung on his good shoulder. He'd made a habit out of taking it everywhere with him, he just felt better prepared... even if he could summon it to his hand whenever he wanted anyway.

Shima paused, looking at Mahiru sitting on the top of the hill. He was a little hard to see past the decorative stones of the park, but he was there. It made Shima's heart start beating faster. Come on man... Just go get it over with... He pulled his bag up on his shoulder and took a deep breath before he started the rest of the way up the hill. Never before had climbing a simple hill felt like it took a million years. By the end of it Shima swore he'd hadn't breathed the whole way up.

"Hey man." Mahiru was holding a cup of noodle. Shima blinked, staring down at it, "Thanks... I uh I hadn't eaten." Holy shit that was so awkward... what the hell? He took his bag off, letting thud on the ground with a metallic clank. He took the cup of noodle from him. He took a seat and rested the cup carefully in his bad hand, it precariously leaned against his chest. Shima then picked up the chopsticks awkwardly in his good hand- his left one. After a moment of increasingly more awkward chopstick holding he let out a nervous laugh, "This... This is kind hard isn't it? The hospital always gave me forks before..." He had a light pink tinge on his cheeks from his embarrassment.

"Anyway! What did you want to talk about man?"

Shima only had one good hand.

One.

Why on Earth had bringing Cup of Noodles been his best idea? There were millions of other dishes to serve. Finger food would've been easier. Anything not required chopsticks, would've been easier. Okay sure, the nostalgia of their first meeting burned deep within the eve's mind. The euphoria of finding the perfect comfort food completely overwhelmed the sense of reality. Renzo couldn't eat with chopsticks and one hand. This is off to a terrible start. A disaster. The worst thing that could've happened. Jabber had been right to bring food to soothe things over, but...this?

Keep it together.

"I don't know what I was thinking. Sorry." Mahiru rubbed the back of his neck, flushing a little. "I should've brought a fork, my bad. Did you, uh, need help?" The eve offered, scooting closer. "I can hold the noodles while you scoop." It was a stupid idea. Everyone knows it'd be easier if Mahiru just used Shima's chopsticks to feed him, but he would die right here and now if he did that. Especially with the topic at hand.

Smooth.

"It's about, everything." Mahiru cleared his throat. "And it's kind of...stupid. I'd rather, you know than...not know. So I'm just gonna say it. It's simpler that way."

I love you.

Mahiru's ears were burning, trying to remember what he had practiced. His eyes ended up wandering back to Shima, struggling with his meal.

I love you when you leave your dirty dishes in the sink, or when you cook the same meal every single day. I love you when you read those stupid magazines until you're giddy with excitement. I love you when you practice origami and leave cats all over the dorm. I love you in the early hours of the morning, and late into the evening. I love you when you're talking about something you're passionate about, how your eyes light up and your smile gets so wide, like how nothing could go wrong. And I'll still love you, even when things do go wrong. Because life is crazy, the furthest thing from simple. But I can't imagine facing it without you there too.

"I...uh..." Mahiru stammered, taking in a deep breath. He locked eyes with Shima, his gaze not wavering.

I don't do this kind of thing so my advice isn't great. But I've learned that a lot of stuff has worked out by thinking simply.

"I love you, Renzo."

"No no it's fine I got it. See?" Shima managed to get some noodled and slurped them down. He was gonna have to get used to eating with left handed chopsticks anyway, the sling wasn't going to come off for another week. He continued to slowly eat noodles while Mahiru worked up the courage to speak. Is he... is he going to confess? Oh shit he is isn't he...?

Shima watched Mahiru stammer, their eyes matching gazes. Don't break his heart. Don't toy with his feelings man. He deserves so much better. Shima was locked in his own internal battle, making sure that he didn't fuck this up. That he handled this well so that it didn't end with Mahiru leaving with tears. He has talked it out with Rin. He knew Mahiru was probably going to say he liked him. He knew it, he'd been telling himself that for days.

I love you, Renzo.

Shima stared at him. His arm slowly fell to his side, leaving a single noodle hanging on his chin. His cheeks got darker, it was exactly like he'd imagined back in the hospital... But Mahiru said it with so much more certainty than he could have ever prepared himself for. "I... I know." Shima blinked, and his face turned beet red. WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?!

Hot liquid on his leg made him jump, he'd spilled more the cup of noodle across his thigh with the sudden motion. "Ah!" Shima wiped the noodles off and set the cup down. He put the chop sticks in it before wiping at his pant legs more. Then he broke down laughing, he doubled over and laughed for a bit. When he sat up again, he looked at Mahiru with tears in his eyes.

"I um... I kind of uh figured it out... back when I first woke up..." He laughed lightly, his eyes drifting down to the grass between them, "Or I had my suspicions! So... hah... when you said it... that just kind of slipped out..." His bad hand gripped the edge of the sling as he fidgeted awkwardly. Shima rubbed the back of his neck with his good hand, What do I say...? Don't leave me sounds so desperate. Stay with me sounds weird... He bit his lip, He said Renzo...

Shima looked away from him, it was clear from the tips of his ears, his face was probably just as red as it had been when Mahiru confessed, "Can.... ca-can.. um... can you say it again?"

He....

Mahiru blinked, watching Shima laugh lightly, his cheeks just as red and dusted with pink. His heart was beating so fast he could hear it in his ears, jumping to his throat. All the butterflies in his stomach swarmed. This hadn’t been what he had expected. Everything about this confession was a disaster, from the venue to the timing, to the noodles, to the delivery of it. If it was any consolation, Shima looked about as nervous as he felt. Both of them were on the same page.

He laughed, too, at their combined disaster. Split noodles all over Shima’s lap and clothes. Mahiru’s own nervousness. The fact there had been a million ways this could go, but this is the result of it. A long, hearty laugh. As if it was one last little test. A failed, crazy, confession. It set the tone for whatever this was. Whatever they were. Just like it had started back in September. When they’d been assigned roommates. The two of them had fought, argued almost every day while living together. It had its ups and its downs, for sure. But even while they’d spent months sharing the same space, Mahiru hadn’t felt closer to Shima than he did right now.

I’ve never seen him laugh like this.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do with you.” Mahiru wiped a tear from his eye, voice light and happy. “This is what I get for taking suggestions on how to do a confession from the network of all places.”

Renzo wants me to say it again?

“Alright, fine.” Mahiru cupped Shima’s good hand with both of his own, looking him directly in the eyes again, by now he had scooted closer, and the two were near inches from each other. “I love you, Renzo. I’ve loved you for awhile now, I just didn’t know how to put it to words. Sorry, that’s really cheesy. I’m bad at this. We’re bad at this. But uh—“ He paused, turning redder. Mahiru looked back at Shima again. “But we can learn together. I mean, if you’ll have me, that is. It’s cool if you don’t. Or whatever. But I think it’d be...cool.” He laughed, “Okay, that was pretty bad, wasn’t it?”

Shima felt Mahiru scoot closer to him, and his voice was light and happy. He swallowed dryly, despite the laughter of this whole confession, it was still making him anxious. He got confession advice on the networks? The sheer picture of it almost made him laugh. Of course he did! That's how Rin probably knew about it! Shima wondered who'd give him advice, and what advice they gave.

I love you, Renzo Shima shut his eyes at the stress in the word love. His fingers curled around Mahiru's hands and squeezed them tight. He listened to the rest of Mahiru's confession while he held his breath. He couldn't stop the smile that spread across his face. He sounds like he's trying to thank me for my hospitality. He let go of his breath in a soft chuckle. It's.. it's weirdly cute?

Shima turned around, his face was still pretty red. He pulled Mahiru closer a bit and rested his forehead on Mahiru's shoulder. For once in this whole ordeal... Shima didn't care. Leaning on Mahiru like this felt like a long needed hug that nearly brought him to tears. He didn't even think of his family or any of the bullshit back home. All he could think about was Mahiru, and the teasing he knew he was going to get from Rin later. Still, even if he did get ribbed, no one would ever know what happened in this moment but them, and that made him feel weightless. Mahiru's presence made him feel better, it always had. He didn't feel alone anymore, nor did he feel like an outsider among his friends. Mahiru made him feel seen.

"Yeah... it was pretty bad." He couldn't help but chuckle again while he spoke. He took his hand out of how Mahiru was cupping it so he could hold one of Mahiru's hands properly. His thumb gently stroked the side of Mahiru's hand, "But you're not wrong.. We are..." He mumbled softly before he took a deep breathe. You've got to let him know how you feel. Shima reminded himself and his chest got tight again. That was hard...

"Did you know that uh.. two Cancers have good compatibility?" On his bad hand, Shima's fingers drummed against the sling they were in, "So.. if you uh if you wanted to... uh I'd like it if you... uh yeah.. I-I'll have you..." He laughed, completely embarrassed over what just stumbled out of his mouth. Shima shyly picked his head up off Mahiru's shoulder now that he had confessed fully. "If.. if you want to stay.." The final insecure words slipped from his mouth before he could stop them. He gazed at Mahiru, his face was still as red as before, but he had a very small soft smile.

"You...checked our compatibility? Really?" Mahiru tried to suppress a bit of laughter, this one was more of shock than anything. Renzo had checked it at least once, which was his way of saying, confirming that he liked Mahiru back. If he hadn't just said he wanted him back. Just how long had he liked him back? We need to work on our communication, seriously. "No, sorry, I'm sorry for laughing. That's...that's, wow. It's cute."

I love you so much.

Mahiru's heart just about burst when Shima leaned on him. Careful not to disturb the sling or any injuries, Mahiru gave him a hug back. He couldn't stop smiling, wanting to live in this moment forever. Everything about it felt amazing, warm. And for the first time, he wasn't afraid to hold him, even for just a second. Renzo wants me too. All of this was going so fast his mind could barely keep up with it all.

"Of course I'll stay." Mahiru gulped, tilting his head. He gave Shima's hands a firm squeeze for reassurance. "I want to stay. There's no one else I want to be with. Because...y-you're special to me, Renzo."

We're so close. Their faces were inches from each other, hands connected. By now, the sun was beginning to go down. The sky was a faint orange as the sun began to set. Feeling Shima's breaths against him, all the details of his face clear and closer than ever before. Mahiru couldn't help but stare again. It was as if he was seeing Shima again for the first time, falling all over again. He felt safe here, with Shima. He always had, even back at their apartment or when he revealed what he was and what he did back home for a living. Shima felt safe, like home, even though he was the furthest thing from it.

Ask.

"I-I think I wanna try do something stupid again. If you want, but I-I don't wanna do it without asking first." Mahiru proclaimed, resting his forehead on Shima's. Heart jumping. He brought his other hand, the one Shima wasn't holding, up to cup the side of his cheek. "Can I...uh, kiss you?"

"Yeah.. I checked it a couple days ago..." Shima admitted with a light laugh. He relished the hug Mahiru gave him. He felt so safe. "I've only made exceptions a few times.." He protested to Mahiru's laughter. He... he thinks it's cute? It's not that cute... it's a reasonable thing to do...

Mahiru's hand was so warm against his cheek. Shima stared into his eyes as the question echoed in his mind. Do something stupid... Shima tilted his head the opposite way of Mahiru's and leaned in, his nose gently bumped Mahiru's before their lips met. His heart fluttered, soaring through the cloud 9 he was on. He held the kiss for longer than he'd ever intended and slowly pulled away. This wasn't his first kiss, but it was his first from a boy. He was glad it was Mahiru.

"I think you're special too Mahiru... And it makes me really happy that you want to stay with me..." He said softly, still gazing at Mahiru's face. His heart was still racing from that kiss. Shima looked down at their hands, "Do you... wanna go get noodles somewhere where with a table?" He laughed lightly, "Though... can I change my pants first?"
