Belladonna just couldn't understand it. She thought she'd been making progress, this past while. It seemed like, with the support of her newfound familiar, that she'd finally started to find some bit of blackness in her. She'd thought perhaps, once she practiced more, she might be able to use it even without Rover close by, not unlike a faucet being left on. Surely she would at least be left a drip of dark magic.
But ever since she'd passed through to this world, only to find that Rover was not tucked safely in her pocket, she couldn't seem to summon even a hint of shadow. Not one drop. She'd tried to show the doctors and important-looking science men (silly fools, thinking they could logic the world into shape) but was unable to summon even the smallest, drippy, little toadstool. Instead, a tiny perfect nest with a tiny perfect baby hummingbird cradled within had appeared in the center of the table between her and the agent seated across from her.
Disappointed, she slumped in her chair, trying and failing not to blush at the agent's raised eyebrows. "I'm sorry," she said sadly. Suddenly feeling sad and not quite knowing why, the agents tried to reassure her, which only made her feel bad that she'd upset them. She could smell rain starting to brew in the room, and drew herself in, regaining her composure as the agents left the room to confer with the others she knew were watching behind the one-way mirror. The baby hummingbird cheeped softly, and she sighed, running a finger over its featherless head.
Belladonna supposed that she was just too far from Rover, with a barrier between alternate worlds between them. It was too soon for her to be separated from him. They'd needed more time. She hoped that Terence was taking good care of the little earthworm. She missed Terence and Rover, and Mr. Leadbetter, and Lester. She even missed the other witches, in a way - she did hope they were properly looking after their familiars. She was worried about Arriman, too - without her and Rover, surely Madame Olympia would win, and Belladonna was honestly frightened of the glamorous enchantress. She needed to find a way home... but how to go about that?
