He had told her this would work! She was supposed to meet Darius and she thought she'd done everything he'd told her to do but this was not the marketplace in town.

She didn't know where she was, or how she'd get back, or what was going on at all!

She stood there, in the sweltering heat, in her long dress and odd shoes and just looked around, wondering if she were in hell and starting to cry.

Emma was very put out as well. The damn Godbox machine had spit her out high above the ground. The landing hadn't hurt her, since she was unbreakable, but it had ruined her image inducer.

The heat was no bother, but the sun made her body as bright as a lighthouse, and she huffed in irritation, looking around desperately for a large hat or an umbrella or something. She also made a mental note to wear darker colors from now on. White did little to reduce the glare, and therefor the attention she drew.

Ophelia's eyes widened and she stared at the...apparition open-mouthed. But she approached carefully, asking "Are you all right?"

She clutched her Godbox in one hand and had her long single braid wound around her other hand. She looked awkward--awkward in her clothes, awkward in the weird shoes she was wearing--just awkward.

She looked, in short, like someone taken completely out of time and place and stuck somewhere completely unfamiliar.

For the second time. She really wanted to go back home to Maine. It might be unfamiliar but at least she wasn't so hot that she felt like burning up.

Emma quickly bought a hat, plopping it unceremoniously on her head. She turned to the awkward looking teen, sighing for a moment at the fact that the girl looked older than she did.

"Yes. Thank you. Are you?" It seemed a fair enough question. Addressing another person's problems was far easier. Never mind the fact that she was nowhere near Henry's lab, which had been her intended destination.

"I...do not know. I was supposed to meet someone, with this...Godbox thing. And...now I'm here."

She looked around, with wide eyes. "Are we in Hell?" Because she wasn't seeing a city in a town. She was seeing things that she didn't understand at all and feeling a place that was so intensely hot that she couldn't help but think she was damned.

Emma laughed, even though it wasn't a very funny statement. She shook her head, tapping her image inducer again, in the hopes that it might do some good. "No, not as far as I can tell, at least. We seem to be in South America. Which was always too hot for my taste."

She used her telepathy to scan the minds around her. After a moment, she nodded. "There's a hotel close by. I suggest we take a room, until we figure out what is going on."

Lots of people used to laugh at Ophelia, though not so much in the past couple of months, while she was grieving. "...is that very near Maine?"

Though Ophelia didn't know what a 'hotel' was, she was all for getting away from the glare of the sun and maybe somewhere she could huddle and try to get herself to stop trembling. So she nodded.

Maine? No wonder the girl was dressed for cold weather. "Not terribly close, no. Though I'm sure you'll get back in time. I'll examine our godboxes in the hotel room."

She strode off toward the hotel, trusting that Ophelia would follow. After all, Emma was the only one who spoke her language in the area.

Ophelia nodded and hurried to follow the other woman. This was...terribly frustrating and not just a little frightening.

First, she'd been taken from Denmark, and plunked down in a bed with some strange (but handsome, and terribly kind) man she didn't even know and in a world that was so alien to her that she could find little that was familiar in the least but for the plants. And now this? Would she be here forever?

She sighed, with a little whimpering sound at the end of her sigh, and kept her head down as she followed.

Emma checked into the hotel, sighing a little herself. This was not how she'd hoped to spend her day. the girl needed attention, and probably a lot of it.

The next time someone called her selfish she was going to kick them in the teeth. "We have a room now. It's on the second floor. Can you manage that?"

Second floor. Yes, she could manage that. They did have stairs in her time and place. So she nodded. "Yes. Where are the stairs, please?"

Once again, Emma led the way. Being inside made her look more human, since the sun was no longer refracting all over her body. It still didn't conceal the fact that she was made completely of diamonf, but it was at least less ostentatious.

She opened their room, looking around with a sigh. It was plain as could be: two small beds of questionable comfort with cheap covers, a dresser bolted to the floor, and a key to the communal bathroom.

Still, it was clean and out of the sun, and therefor and improvement. Emma held the door for Ophelia. "Make yourself at home."

She was very...unusual, this woman. But then, everything was unusual, and at this point, the woman was just one more thing to be strange. Ophelia sat on one of the beds and pulled her knees to her chest.

"Thank you. My name is Ophelia." At least she should know her name.

Emma quirked an eyebrow. This was the kind of thing that happened when you named your daughter after a famous suicide victim.

"Emma. You're new to this world too, it seems." She sat on the other bed, peering at Ophelia.

Ophelia nodded. "This is all very strange to me. One moment, I was by the brook, the next I was asleep in a bed in...Maine. And...there was a man next to me. Everything is so...bright and strange here."

Emma nodded, wishing she had a pad of paper to write things down on. It was good to have something to do with her hands. "So you're distressed because the situation is unfamiliar."

That seemed pretty reasonable, really.

"Yes, mostly. I suppose the other things...shouldn't matter."

But they did, and they still hurt. Even though it was hundred and hundreds of years in the future and so far away from everything that made any sort of sense.

Though it was difficult to tell, one of Emma's eyebrows rose delicately. Oh, this was going to be fun.

"Other things matter more often than you'd think they should. Would you like to talk about them?"

Ophelia blinked at Emma. No one ever asked her to talk. "They're done. What I think doesn't matter. Shouldn't matter. I'm just a girl."

She was just supposed to do as she was told and maybe that hadn't been enough. Maybe she wasn't enough.

Emma thought for a moment. How could she best get this girl to open up? If the Godbox was going to spit her out God-knew-were, it would be better to stay in one place until she knew it was safe.

Beside, this might be interesting.

"Do you have any scars, Ophelia?"

That was a strange question.

"Yes," she said softly. "Several." She paused for a moment. She hardly ever got to talk about herself, though Darius had been trying to get her to open up.

"Do you...want to see?"

"If you want to show them, I'll look. It's not necessary, though. The wounds that caused those scars are all healed. The scar remains behind. Events that hurt us do end, but sometimes they leave behind their own scars. Just because you can't see them doesn't mean they're not there."

Her job wasn't to get rid of them, but to help people make peace with the scars on their own psyche. Between teaching and being CEO of a huge company.

Her brow furrowed as she thought about this. Even the most basic psychological thought was completely new to her, so it took some thought to figure out.

"People listened to me. When I wandered. I could say things. I could sing bawdy songs. And I wasn't just some nothing at my embroidery. They listened. Why didn't they listen before?"

"Why do you think they didn't listen?"

She was becoming more interested the more Ophelia talked. No doubt this would be a fascinating subject.

"I don't know... because I was a girl?" She kept herself curled into a ball, it made her feel safer. Ophelia dragged her fingers through her hair a bit.

"Maybe because I didn't make them listen."

The girl seemed to be quite eager to blame her problems on gender. Emma made a mental note to explore that further later.

"You say that people listen to you now. Do you make them listen? Or do they do so willingly?" knowing how Ophelia felt now that she thought she was being heard would no doubt be helpful.

"He asks me how I am. And he looks at me."

Hamlet had looked at her like that once but that was over now. She wondered idly if he had missed her when she disappeared.

"I don't have to make people listen. Every day, people notice me. When I'm out to the mail-box or when I'm gardening. People pass by, they see that I'm there and acknowledge me."

Emma nodded, wondering what the girl had been through to make her feel so very unhappy about her past. "You're not used to being acknowledged, or having people notice you. Does it scare you a little to be paid this attention, or do you enjoy it?"

"Different things are expected of me here," she said. "It's...hard to explain. Before, I only had to be my father's daughter or my brother's sister. Or a potential wife. Here? I am expected to be myself and I do not know who that is yet."

She had subverted her every desire to her father's will. And when he was gone, what was she to do? Maybe she was meant to roam and pick flowers and tell the truth.

Emma nodded. That, at least, was fairly typical. "Often the trick is to stop thinking so hard about it. We are never fully formed, and personal evolution is necessary. Who you are today is not who you were yesterday, or who you will be tomorrow. Just enjoy the experience for now, if you can."

"I shall try. But nearly a thousand years worth of history is so much to catch up on...I fear I am dreadfully behind. It's a terribly...uncomfortable feeling, and it never quite goes away."

She looked up at Emma. "You're very pretty," she said quietly. She'd been wanting to say that for a while, but only just found the words.

"That feeling will no doubt ease as you become more comfortable here." Emma was feeling a little out of sorts herself, especially in this circumstance.

Ophelia's compliment made her smile, though it was tight, due to the uncertainty of their situation. "Thank you. It has been interesting, adapting to this body." Even now, she sometimes wished her powers had never manifested, or had done so some other way.

"Oh. I've never seen anyone who looks like you," she said, her voice touched with wonder.

There was so much here that she had never seen before. Sometimes, she wanted to see everything that she could, and other times, she just wanted to bury her head and not think of anything at all.
