Who: Ann Mulhall + Capt. Kirk
When: 2259.218
Where: Ann's bio lab
What: Ann receives an unexpected visitor while tending her favorite specimen
Rating: PG (I'm pretty sure, but Jim is involved so...)
Ann had finished her reports and more routine work. Now she had some time to invest with Flora. She set a Bach concerto playing and watched as the plant opened its flowers and stretched out its leaves. Ann had always liked this music and Flora seemed to respond to her mood which created an optimal situation for spraying Flora with a fine mist of nutrients.
Of course, there was an ulterior motive. Ann intended to see if the plant was only responding empathically or if, after a few weeks, she could get a similar reaction when triggering the music remotely. It would be interesting to see if Flora was capable of developing a Pavlovian response since it might indicate rudimentary intelligence.
Either way, it was pleasing to see the plant fairly bask in the spray. "You know Flora, you are so much easier than a child. You can't run away and I doubt you'd flip anyone off even they were projecting anger at you."
Yes, she was talking to a plant. But it listened and responded better than a lot of people, and rudimentary intelligence or not, was probably more rational than Mrs. Cullen.
Flora shrank a little at the flash of annoyance that accompanied the thought of the brat child's mother. "I'm sorry Flora," Ann said, trying to think happy thoughts. "Back quiet, peaceful appreciation of Bach."
