Who: Phillip Hughes & MI7
When: Wednesday, 13 May 2009 (Backdated)
Where: London MI7 headquarters
What: Memorial service for Field Agent Peter Alan Carnegie
We are here to commemorate the life and service of Field Agent Peter Alan Carnegie, who was murdered aboard the HMS Seeker in the line of duty. He gave his life for the mission of MI7, a mission that constantly calls for courage and that is connected to the saving of lives. No one can doubt Agent Carnegie's commitment to serve his country, his patriotism, and his compassion for others.
Today, as we gather here, we mourn his loss, we honor his service, and we offer our condolences to his family for their sacrifice. Agent Carnegie's sacrifice answered a high calling, one that we will never forget. In a simple chapel in Normandy, where so many gave their lives in defence of freedom, are inscribed the words, "Think not only upon their passing, remember the glory of their spirit." And so we do today with Agent Carnegie. For his generosity of spirit shines brightly in this place with the spark that some knew so well, and some had just begun to learn.
England is deeply proud to have men and women like Agent Carnegie serve in its ranks. Their commitment to freedom, their devotion to the Nation, their compassion for those whom they seek to protect, and their unwavering dedication to the just cause in which they so bravely Soldier, gives all of us breathtaking pause.
We pause now to reflect on his life with a passage from the book of Psalms (27:1-3):
The LORD is my light and my salvation—
whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the stronghold of my life—
of whom shall I be afraid?
When evil men advance against me
to devour my flesh,
when my enemies and my foes attack me,
they will stumble and fall.
Though an army besiege me,
my heart will not fear;
though war break out against me,
even then will I be confident.
Agent Carnegie went to serve a cause far greater than anything he had ever known before in this confidence. Likewise, it is our duty to continue in our mission with confidence. His sacrifice for the freedom of others will not be forgotten by his country or by MI7. We salute his devotion to his duty, we honour his courage, and we remember his extraordinary example of selfless service.
