Commander Jane Shepard was not a woman who was typically nervous. Years of trying to prevent a war, running errands of every conceivable type, and dealing with the general issues of being a Commanding Officer across a non-unified galaxy, had tempered her pretty well when it came to dealing with stress. However, that afternoon, Jane Shepard had learned something rather important about herself: She was not a very good cook. Fortunately, amid the streams of grumbling and cursing and after burning the first batch of chicken (Jane was thankful she'd bought extra, just because of this possibility), Jane had managed to get it to a place she was satisfied. Was the food the best thing she'd ever eaten? No, absolutely not. She hadn't expected it to be either, but that wasn't the point. It was a meal, for her crew, for her friends, at a time when she imagined everyone could use it. It was why she'd, rather painstakingly, shuffled around the ingredients during the move, and done her best to orchestrate the surprise in secret. Everybody needed a win. It was why she'd set the whole plan in motion with Garrus and Tali'Zorah keeping each other occupied. She'd even made some mild attempts to keep Liara out of the kitchen but, if Jane were being entirely honest, she hadn't tried too hard at all. Besides, domestication was a strange thing for all of them to be going through. Jane was glad they were all here and, despite the nagging concerns about what was happening where they were from, she was actually finding the transition to be rather easy -- insomnia and nightmares not withstanding. Jane smiled to herself, looking rather satisfied at the pan chalked full of chicken, carrots, potatoes, and onions. She was thankful it had been relatively in-expensive too and, even though she'd asked Danny to pick up the desserts, it had left her with enough money to buy some of her own. Besides, Jane appreciated the value of a plan B, because not having one was just not something she dealt with very well. When everything was riding on one plan, without any other options, the room for something to go wrong was way too high. She needed this to go smoothly, and that, really was the end of that. She placed the pan, back in the oven, to keep it warm before opening the fridge to check on the cake (which she had carefully hidden in the drawer labeled 'Crisper'') and on the ice cream she had stuffed in the back of the freezer. Everything was there. Everything was in place. She'd even managed to snag a small collection of beer, which she seriously hoped was worth drinking, and had it ready to go for when people arrived. Now it was just a matter of pacing, because she couldn't bring herself to sit still, waiting for the events to get started. |
