"Clever got me this far... then tricky got me in..."
Who: Alec Tremont and Katherine Athena.
What: Alec's been recruited to the cause... possibly.
When: Saturday, May 29, 2096
Where: How to Cook a Wolf, Queen Anne, Seattle
Status: Closed; complete

Another meeting, this time with someone that she hadn't recruited.

A wry smile cracking her lips, Katherine wondered how that would go. She studied the menu casually. Italian food was something that she loved, particularly for first meetings. It was so often messy.

She glanced down at her watch, tapping the newsfeed so that she could watch the headlines scroll by. Another murder, this one of a young girl who'd been unfortunate enough to bear a joker that gave her horns on her forehead. Katherine shuddered slightly, tapping through to the next story. Another series of gun laws was being proposed and she sighed. It was likely that her constituents were flooding the office lines even as she glanced at the scrolling text.

"Mm." He cocked his head, considering. "That could be done in several ways, and may be done differently depending on their individual circumstances. Some we may be able to keep off completely. Others likely will have to register. The little blonde gymnast who so publicly blew it four years ago, for example. For others we might be able to manage some sort of false registration record, if the goal is to keep their true abilities from the government. I'm assuming that the point of government registration is so that the government can use them for their own means. We want to make them look as unappealing as possible, without making them look so undesirable the government decides they're expendable."

He picked up his knife and fork, holding them in a way that spoke of an upper class upbringing, even if his outward appearance gave nothing to suggest it. "For the record, I have no drawn, and have no intention of doing so. Any governmental interest in me would have nothing to do with the wild card, so I can remain, at least as far as that goes, a nat in the hole, so to speak."

"You aren't the only nat in the group. Ganesh Surendar also falls into your category, as far as I know. He may be a latent. His records are in England and a bit beyond my access." Katherine gave him the information with no real intention for him to do anything about it. "I feel you're correct about Maxine, however, and there are others who have no government identification. That may be a problem to be dealt with at a later time."

"Is there anything else about you that the government--at this time--would have an interest in?" She rather thought, strangely, that if there was, he was likely to tell her.

"Not that I'm aware of, and I'm careful to keep tabs on that sort of thing." He smiled. "'Wanted by the FBI' just doesn't look good on one's list of qualifications for legitimate work."

"I'd like to see that resume," Katherine smiled. "For curiosity's sake. In case I need to know what I've legitimately hired you for one day."

He laughed softly. "Tell me where to send it and you can have it right now." A few taps on his screen and he had it ready, and once Katherine provided the address, he sent it over.

"It's remarkably dull, but all of my references are positively glowing."

"I'll be sure to look it over." It wouldn't do, after all, to not have that knowledge in the event that their cover was blown. She didn't trust Tremont... or his references. "Do you have any questions for me?"

She took a sip of her water, to give him a chance to formulate a thought. There was no wine for her this night.

"Only one." He leaned forward to look her directly in the eye. "Why?"

"I'm afraid you'll have to be more specific."

He rolled his eyes. "Why are you doing this?" He'd be interested to hear what she said, as opposed to what he could dig up on his own if he chose to.

"Off the record?" Katherine asked, rising to her feet. Nothing was truly off the record, not in this day and age.

She slid her card into the table to pay the check, catching it as it slid back out and placing it into her purse.

"As far as I'm concerned, this entire conversation is off the record," Alec said. He meant it, too. He certainly had the means to record it if he chose, but he hadn't.

"Alright then." The older woman took a breath, slid her purse on her arm, then leaned over and whispered, "Because."

And with that, she gave him a fleeting smile. "Good night, Mr. Tremont."

He threw his head back and laughed. "I like you," he said. "You're as big a liar as I am."

"Yet I wouldn't want to bet on which one of us has had more practice," Katherine said as she gave him a final, departing nod before she slipped out the door.
