Who: Zadkiel Thrush and Ganesh Surendar
When: Friday, May 21, 2096, evening
Where: Anhalt Building
What: Zadkiel has been avoiding social interaction, but Ganesh won't let him.
Status: Closed, Complete

After the disastrous meeting with Gabe on Monday, Zadkiel had mostly been avoiding everyone in the house. He got up early to go to work, and came home late. When he was in the house, he stayed in his room. The last thing he wanted was to upset or offend anyone else, and it wasn't as if he wasn't used to feeling isolated from the people who surrounded him.

In a way, this self-imposed exile felt more like home than anything had since he'd arrived in Seattle.

"Physically," Zadkiel said. "I guess you could call it a catch. I can heal people, but whatever pain I take from them becomes my own. It's too a lesser degree, and generally after a few hours or a good night's sleep it fades away, but I have to be careful what I do and how much I do, because I have to be able to endure it."

He finally sits down, cross-legged on the bed next to Ganesh, leaning against the wall at the head of the bed so he can face the other man. "I wasn't always like this. Or I didn't know. It started when I was eleven or twelve. You know how little children, when they get hurt, they want someone to kiss it and make it better? I realized after a few times that I actually did make it better. It was subtle enough, thankfully, that no one ever seemed to notice. But I was very popular when it came to bumps and bruises." He smiled again, although it faded after a moment.

He didn't bring up the other catch. There was no reason for anyone to ever know about that.

"That's a hard choice to make at twelve," Ganesh said. He watched Zadkiel's smile fade away, his own expression mirroring that.

His father's face came to him as he looked down at his own hands, thinking of the choices he wished he could have made. It was always the same when he remembered it, kind but in pain, the thick, hard bark of his skin cracking with every slight movement. Devesh Surendar had been fond of joking with people, of telling them that "I break, not bend" but only his wife and son knew that it was true.

A smile crossed his face, however, as he remembered it. He missed his father, after all. His memories were happy ones.

"Don't worry," he assured Zadkiel, grinning. "I won't ask you to heal every papercut. And I promise not to chop off an arm."

"Good, because I don't think I could help with that. Not if it was completely severed." He cocked his head to the side, considering it. "At least I don't think I could. I don't really want to find out."

"Neither do I." The grin widened. "I could clip a nail and we could check."

"That's not living tissue," Zadkiel pointed out. "I can't do anything about bad haircuts."

"Are you trying to say something?" Ganesh snatched a pillow and stuck it on top of his head, still grinning. "Though I suppose that doesn't help." Letting it drop back on the bed, he added, "Engineers are supposed to have bad haircuts. On principle."

"No. It wasn't a comment on your hair. I'm sorry."

Apparently he could only manage to keep up a conversation for so long before saying something wrong. At least he'd managed it longer than he had with Gabe.

But Ganesh only laughed. "I was teasing. Do you think I haven't got a sense of humor? Is it the accent or the profession?" He grinned, leaning against the wall.

"So, tell me, since you're the second person I've talked to and the first who knows I brought a suitcase--what do I need to know about this place?"

"I don't really know," Zadkiel said. "There's a communal kitchen and living room, but other than that everyone gets their own room. There's not that many of us here yet. One person is apparently offended by the idea of rules. I've mostly avoided everyone." He shrugged.
