Who: JT Cole and Matt Cavanaugh
When: Tuesday, June 1, 2096
Where: Jade-monkey, bar near the group house
What: Drinking and bonding, maybe
Status: Closed, Incomplete

JT eyed the decor of the "biker lesbian" bar with skepticism. Maybe it was worth the bus fare to go back down town to a bar he knows and likes, but he was tired from the little bit of moving he did today. He's going to call Tom and get his car for sure to get the rest. Rolling his neck to get out some kinks he heads up to the bar and grabs a drink menu, not sure what he's interested in.

JT paused, blinked for a bit, then asked, "Thats something, sorry if it's a touchy topic." He decided not to pry and sipped his drink.

"I don't like it," Matt said, his fingers picking pointlessly at the napkins, tiny shreds of paper littering the bar. "I mean, it's not me, right, but I didn't fucking get to pick, and everything I've heard's that it's sort of related to you somehow, so I guess there's a me out there who's a real badass or something, but man, it's just not fucking me. Sorry for taking it out on you, it's more sensitive than I really fucking like. Same time," and he smiled, a little crooked, "it's what it is, right? No way to change it."

"There's always talk if a cure," JT says, using air quotes. "And I'm nor sure how much it has to do with the person, as opposed to the genetics. Maybe it tries to fill in a aspect if you that is missing? Like Tom is always too busy, Maxxie is to tied down and deep down inside you are really a big softy?" He shurgs, hoping his small joking won't be taken the wrong way.

Matt grinned at him. "Well, you see the dilemma about joining a group that's supposed to, you know, show off that we're really just totally harmless and shit, then." He paused and looked at JT carefully. "WHat about you, why are you here? What do you do?" The tone was mocking, but not of the other man; it was a mock of the situation they found themselves in.

"I make a damn fine latte," JT replied with a shrug and some bitterness. "Honestly, I've no clue. Maybe I'm the control? The norm, or nat, to compare everyone else to? I think this is really some kind of social experiment, forget this superhero thing."

"Or maybe you're to prove that we can coexist, without the aces, like, eating your head or something." He hadn't missed the bitterness, though, and he looked carefully at JT again. "Seriously, man, the rest of us are trying to figure out how to live with each other, we need nats to fit into that too, or else there's really no fucking point, you know? I mean, come on, if all of us are wild cards, then fuck, all we've proved is that we don't need nats. Not a very good proof, if Athena's after the fucking rebirth of the Four Aces or something. Besides, already told you, I don't use my power, so that must make me the fucking awesome shooter or something, because I might as well be a nat, you know?"

"Suppose, yeah," JT admits, "But then we have these missions, and I feel a bit useless. Or even worse, a liability. It'd be fine if this wad just a Road Rule's knock off, then I'd agree with you." He downs his drink and dignsjs for another.

"Told you," Matt pointed out, pausing long enough to gesture for another of his own, "I'm one too. So the point's not to think about being a fucking liability but figure out what you can do. Can't all be violence, right? There's got to be finding, speaking - all kinds of things. Violence - and my opinion's that all powers are violent on some level - is the last resort. I mean, I'm a pacifist, for fuck's sake, I don't kill not because I can't but because I won't. So what stops you from, I don't know, learning fucking whatever it is Maxxie teaches, or carrying a gun, or whatever, if you think that the violence is the point? I mean, you say missions, and that's fine, but you talk about them kind of like you expect them to be just, you know, gang shootouts in the streets, and they're really fucking not, I hope, because if they are, I'm going to Canada to learn to say 'eh' a lot."

"It's not the violence, or not that I want to hurt people. I don't. But when we go into some of these situations, I'm worried. I guess I'll have to figure out what I can do when we don't go to dangerous areas, like Jokertown, and on the more dangerous ones just bow out," JT replied. "You've figured out how you fit in then?"

"That's kind of wanky," Matt said calmly. While everyone had the right to decide their own limits, there was deciding that you were going to sit this one out and deciding that you were going to sit this one out while everyone else was allowed to carry on. "I mean, it is, a little. Like, setting limits for yourself's one thing, but setting limits that exclude you from what the rest of us are expected to do is entirely another, you know? What do you mean, Jokertown's dangerous? Nats fucking hang out there and party, man, it's not dangerous just because you don't have three heads."

"Do you watch the news? Seen the riots? I know there used to be parties there, I've gone. But it's about one riot away from martial law, if you can believe the news," JT replied, a bit annoyed. "And why not set different guidelines for myself? We all have differnt skills, as you just said. Why should we all be held to the same expectations?"

"Because that's saying that you're fine with living in the same house and taking what resources we've all got, but you're not going to give into that, you know?" He looked at the kid levelly. "Like, if I feed you, I expect that you're going to do something to earn it, even if that's just be really entertaining company, you know? It's not all a transaction model, I'm saying. But at the same time, I'm giving you something, so you give me something. And it sounds like you're saying that you've got no fucking intention of giving. Either you can't figure out how to do that, or you don't want to risk your pretty neck for it, and that's not fair, to my fucking way of thinking."

JT just blinked at Matt, "First the 'resources' aren't yours. They are from Katharine. So I'm not leeching off of you, as you are implying. And I am willing to 'give', I'm just trying to figure out how. Some suggestions about that would be a lot better than just bitching at me about giving up." There was liberal use of air quotes in that speech.

"I've gotta go, catch you later," JT snaps, swiping his card at the reader on the bar and standing up.
