"There's no fun being covered in black clothes in the desert..."
Who: Zadkiel Thrush and Gabriel Wilder
What: Zadkiel runs into Gabe again... and again... and again.
When: Monday, May 17, 6 pm
Where: Seattle Public Library (Yes, it really looks like that.)
Status: Closed, complete.

"Fuuuuuuck," Gabe said as he stared at the pile of books teetering in front of him. Each one was the story of a different labor struggle. The Centralia Massacre. The Joker Expulsions. The Everett Massacre. "Fuck."

He stared down at his hands. What was he going to do about the senator's offer? The back of his arms were sweating and as the skin began to prickle, he felt the familiar sickness in the pit of his stomach that told him someone was coming.

"Gabe," the man said as he walked in the door. His hair was the same blue as Gabe's own, all of their features identical. His voice was hushed. "Dude, I just called me five minutes ago. Fail." Then the Avinoam paused. "Um, maybe you should try again." He sat down next to Gabe and picked up a book. The Everett Massacre, a History of the Class Struggle in the Lumber Industry. "Sometimes, I really depress myself." He looked over at the twin of himself.

"I'll call someone else," Gabe said with a sigh. "But you're never much help."

Avinoam looked at the figure approaching, blinking. "I'm gonna hope that's not one of us, man."

"Distance," Gabe said, charging forward towards the elevators. It was quicker than the stairs. Plus... doors were involved.

"You bring the Wild Card back!" He heard the old man ranting. "It comes back!" His head snapped around, staring for a moment. The other self was backing away as the security guard came walking towards the pair.

"Come on," he said, closing his eyes briefly and hoping this incarnation wouldn't last long. He could feel his energy waning with every shout. He slapped his hand against the button, gratefully stepping inside when the doors opened. With any luck, neither of his other selves would follow.

"Um." Gabe said as he looked at Zadkiel. An apology seemed in order but all that came out was "Um. Fuck."

Zadkiel's eyes widened at the profanity, although in this situation it didn't seem misplaced. "Who... what was that?" he asked, then a second later waved his hand, dismissing the question. Talking about anything Wild Card-related, as he assumed it had to be, in public was potential suicide. This was not the time nor the place for that conversation.

"Is there another way out?"

"Yeah." Gabe's finger pressed against another button, taking them back down to the first floor. He leaned his head against the inside of the elevator, feeling the cold steel against his skin. His voice went low as he muttered, "Um... that was me."

"How can that be you, and you're you?" Zadkiel glanced around, knowing he wouldn't see if any sort of listening device had been planted, but looking anyway.

"Wait." Gabe lifted his head once the elevator doors opened. He swiftly walked out, turning once to make Zadkiel was in his wake, before stepping out onto the street. They were three blocks away before he said anything else. By that time, he looked visibly tired.

"I think he must have fucking gotten hit." He sank down on a nearby concrete ledge. Gabe breathed in for another moment, then said, "Um. That's my ace. I call alternate versions of myself."

He wasn't looking at Zadkiel, but at his feet. "And um, they come from different times and ages and um, the future's never the same twice. Sometimes, they're right. Most of the time, they're wrong." He swallowed hard. "I hope."

Zadkiel sat beside him, laying a hand on Gabe's arm lightly. "Are you all right?" His own ace prickled against his skin, but there was nothing physically wrong with Gabe, so he held it back.

"So that was another you? Do you call them on purpose?"

"Yeah, it was. Sometimes I do but other times... it just... happens." Gabe stared down at his feet, wondering how true this one had been.

"What happens after you've created them? His hand stayed on Gabe's arm, wishing there was something he could do.

"They disappear eventually," Gabe said. "They're never here more than a day. The more of them there are, the harder it is for them to exist. I get... tired." He sighed, looking every inch of it.

"Is there anything I can do?" He hoped that the other Gabe could keep them from being pursued. Trouble was, there were likely cameras in the library, and now the other man was caught out as an ace, and that wasn't good.

"I dunno." Gabe shrugged weakly. "Dude, let's just get out of here. I can feel something in my gut."

He didn't specify what or how, simply stood and started walking, his step wavering just slightly.

Zadkiel caught his elbow, holding it as they walked. "Where do we go? I don't know the area much, although my work isn't too far away...?" It came out as a question. "They don't know about me."

"Nah, we don't have to do that." Gabe shrugged, looking a little embarrassed. "Um, fuck. You don't have to. I mean, fuck, I kinda interrupted you."

"You didn't interrupt anything," Zadkiel said. "I was just looking around. I can't even take out books. I don't have a library card." He cocked his head. "I'm the one who interrupted you, I think. I hope I didn't make things worse."

Gabe shook his head. "No. Um... probably it's better that we- I didn't stay. I might've called more." He looked nervous at that thought, his stride lengthening further.

Zadkiel had to take an odd hitching step to catch back up, accommodating the other man's longer stride. He wasn't used to people being significantly taller than him, but Gabe was.

"How many of you can there be?" he asked curiously.

"Six," he paused. "But then they don't last long. And you know... the more there are, the bigger the chance of.. a problem."
