New clothes were bliss. Music outside her own head was bliss. Waking up in a warm bed that didn't have bugs and being able to take a hot shower was absolute bliss. And the best part was that most of them time, they were completely alone here while everyone else worked things out. When she'd woken up, she'd gone through the notes the others had left, put away the mess Andy had left and aired the room out from smoke, then went down into the common room to crank the music.

She danced cheerily as she sang, a hairbrush held up like a microphone as she belted out the lyrics to a favorite pop song, her voice soaring with the music, letting it override the noise inside her mind. Loud as it was, she didn't hear when the door opened, and someone else came in.

He paused. Something wasn't quite right here. "I had thought, from what you said, that you were Mickey's girlfriend." The tone clearly added But I was wrong without saying as much.

Char laughed. "That would be incredibly difficult, considering we share living space. As in, tomorrow, if I'm unlucky, I might wake up as him. Somedays it's a complete crap shoot who gets the body."

"Were you born that way?" Ganesh asked, not repulsed but interested.

Char shuddered. "Oh no, no. I wasn't being silly-- Mickey literally fell into my life, and into me, out of the ceiling of the apartment where I was living for school. I woke up in his head pretty quickly after that, and I've shared mental space with the boys since. I had a completely normal life before that, and I'm sure I went on to have a completely normal life after it, except for being here as well."

"What do you mean, being here as well?" This was fascinating. Had Mickey found a way to import consciousness? Ganesh's mind was whirring with the possibility, trying to consider how it could have occurred. So often wild cards were physical, not mental.

Then again, he reminded himself. You're used to jokers.

"I mean I went on with life, the real me, Charlotte Meadows, probably oh what, almost thirty? Wow, hard to believe that one, and so glad I'm not. But," her grin solidified into something stubborn. "I'm not any less real, for all that I live with Mickey. I'm just not her."

She cocked her head, looking at him. "Since I missed all the chatter, and Mickey isn't great about leaving notes, what brings you among this group? Where're you from and all? Your story has to be more interesting than mine."

"Where am I from? Originally? London, from Selsdon--our Jokertown," Ganesh explained easily. He seemed to have no trouble voicing any of it. "I'm not certain why I was chosen other than that she needed a nat and one who would be comfortable among jokers."

He spread his hands in a Who knows? gesture.

"I'm an engineer, of sorts, but I'm not certain that was important. I don't bloody know what was, to be honest." Ganesh sighed, digging in his pocket for the black envelope, then handed it over to Char. "You can read this, if you like. Each one of us was given one, though the wording was different for each."

Char took the black envelope and looked at it, lips pressed into a rueful smile as she sighed. "I saw our black envelope. I was actually the one awake to find it. It promised Mickey silence. From us, I'm figuring. It's up in our room."

She opened the envelope carefully, drawing the letter out to look at it. "So what memories have you lost? And if you're a nat, why'd you live in a Jokertown?" She tucked the letter back away and held the envelope out to him.

"I think perhaps it was referring to my ex," Ganesh answered with a shrug. "Or perhaps it was written vaguely enough to let me think what it would." He leaned back against the table, rocking slightly.

"I lived in Jokertown because my parents were both jokers. Of course, it wasn't until I was five or so that I actually knew what that meant." He flashed a lopsided smile. "For a long time, it was nats who seemed strange."

"That's not such a bad way to grow up, just seeing people as normal, isn't it?" Char said. "I grew up not really knowing anyone closely who'd drawn, any kind, so it was a shock and surprise waking up in Mickey. You know what it's like, so you're a good choice for this group."

She couldn't help but ask, being curious, "Was your ex a Joker?"

"That ex? Pablo? No." Ganesh sighed. "He was one of the only nats I ever dated. Problem, that."

He scrunched his nose up, then added, "My first girlfriend was. She had a problem with it, however, and it was what broke us up in the end. I think that she couldn't accept that it didn't matter." His gaze was honest as he added, "She was lovely."

Char's head tilted one way when Ganesh mentioned Pablo, then the other way when he went on to talk about his girlfriend. "I'd ask what her Joker was, but I'm kind of getting the feeling you never saw it. I mean, you saw it, but you didn't see it. If you know what I mean. You just see people. For friends and lovers both, everything else doesn't matter, does it?"

"It matters a bit," Ganesh grinned. "I knew a guy once who had quills sticking out his face. He was bloody unpopular at school. Then again, personality didn't help there. And my Mum... she had two mouths instead of one. And when she was mad at you..."

He shuddered, mimicking her voice. "GANESH SURENDAR, YOU GET- except in stereo." The man shook his head.

"Any road. Chandra's joker was that she'd a sort of... mmm, skin over her eyes and nose and mouth." Ganesh shrugged. "She'd a slight speech problem with it but it's not about how you sound, is it?" Then he grinned. "Of course, you've already heard me sing--I've a personal interest in saying as much."

"Quills?" Char's eyes widened. "I haven't seen anything like that, but if he was prickly in spirit as well as face, that'd make being friendly difficult."

The imitation of his mother made her giggle, and she clapped a hand over her mouth to stop it. But what he said about Chandra made sense. "As long as you can still communicate, and you loved her, I can't see how she sounded making a difference." She wrinkled her nose. "You don't sing very well, but we can still be friends. Right?" she grinned. "I accept people whether they can carry a tune or not."
