New clothes were bliss. Music outside her own head was bliss. Waking up in a warm bed that didn't have bugs and being able to take a hot shower was absolute bliss. And the best part was that most of them time, they were completely alone here while everyone else worked things out. When she'd woken up, she'd gone through the notes the others had left, put away the mess Andy had left and aired the room out from smoke, then went down into the common room to crank the music.

She danced cheerily as she sang, a hairbrush held up like a microphone as she belted out the lyrics to a favorite pop song, her voice soaring with the music, letting it override the noise inside her mind. Loud as it was, she didn't hear when the door opened, and someone else came in.

Char turned, laughing to see... oh hell, she couldn't remember his name or find it in notes. "Lyra Faith," she said. "Latest song off of her third album. It's catchy, isn't it? I like the runs at the end of it; good vocal practice for me. Am I playing it too loud for you? I didn't realize anyone else was around."

"Vocal practice?" He quirked an eyebrow at her. "Are you a singer?"

Ganesh walked into the room, his step light in tune with the music. "Am I close on the words? It's bloody difficult to get them all--she sings so fast. That's not the one they play on KNDD all the time, is it?" Chatter was easy for him. He often overloaded on it, if asked, due to the solitary nature of his work.

"I would be if I weren't stuck here," she said with a faint, brief scowl. "It's what I was going to school for."

She swayed a bit to the music, catching a phrase and singing along before grinning. "You're close enough. I could look up the lyrics and tell you for sure, but I don't usually bother. And I don't know about it coming over the air. This," she pointed at the stereo, "is bliss, having it outside my head. I don't have this one in here," she tapped her temple, "and it's nice to hear different things. But usually I just use what's stuck here, or I could go out and stream it, but then people get cranky if I interrupt the news feeds."

He blinked. "What do you mean, outside of your head?" Then Ganesh shook his own.

"I've bloody well forgotten my manners." He offered her his hand. "Ganesh. A pleasure to meet you. That is, if I haven't done. I can be terrible with names." He honestly didn't remember this woman, however. For that matter, there hadn't been many women in the room at all.

Char ignored the question in favor of the introduction. "You haven't, or rather, not exactly. I'm Charlotte. Call me Char, everyone else did. And thank you, no one made a note of your name and I'd forgotten, I'm sorry." She shook his hand, squeezing it just a bit before she let go. "You're..." her gaze turned inward for a moment, staring at a point past his shoulder as she rifled through the information Mickey had made note of before bed that first night. Her nose wrinkled in concentration, voice softer as she read, "...a nat, yes? When did you move in?"

"I haven't officially moved in," he told her. "I'm still considering. You know, I don't have the same reasons that the rest of you do for staying." He looked troubled, adding, "That is, assuming that you are- that you have the Wild Card."

"I don't, but Mickey does." Char shrugged, because that's the way it was. She got all the disadvantages but couldn't walk through walls to compensate. Not that she wanted to, not after what had happened to her when he did. "We moved in that first night, but then, we were homeless and jobless and it's amazing how much of a lure a warm bugless bed and clean clothes can be, not to mention having food that isn't being served at a shelter in the Underground."

A new song kicked in, purely inside her mind and at counterpoint with what played on the stereo, something about down in the underground. Char hummed along under her breath.

"You know, I don't remember seeing you at the meeting," Ganesh said, hopping up on the table and sitting on it, his legs swinging. "So Mickey brought you?"

He wondered whether they'd been selected because they were a guaranteed yes. He still hadn't worked out what his role in this all was. Then again, Ganesh thought. You haven't got much reason to say no.

He looked at her features more carefully, trying to determine if he remembered her from the soup kitchen on Pike Street. Most of those he served food to were jokers but once in a while, someone who looked like a nat slipped through.

"You didn't see me, but I was there." Char grinned, because this part of things was just a bit fun sometimes. Just a little bit. "Mickey can't help but bring me along; I'm a part of the bargain, just like Jimmy, Andy, and the entire online world. I'm the nicest of us, but I might be biased."

He laughed at that, legs swinging just a little higher. "Mickey did seem a little... distracted but that happens." With aces, Ganesh meant.

He glanced down, noticing how neatly she kept her nails. Strangely, it was that which triggered his memory of her--a tiny girl in a bulky jacket. Mickey's jacket.

"So tell me about yourself." He didn't like lumping in people and their partners. It was dishonest, to assume someone was nothing more than another's shadow.

"About me? There's not much to tell." Char shrugged, falling back onto the sofa and letting her legs stretch out. "Once upon a time I was a music major at a college in Albany, then Mickey fell into my life," she giggled, because oh, that was quite literal, "and then I started waking up in random places and eventually we were here. It's been eight years since then, and I've been dirtier and hungrier than ever, and I can't go see my family, and I'm not entirely sure, but Mickey might want to kill me. Not that I'll let him." Charlotte's tone was frank, because she had no intention of being erased.

"I work when I can, usually secretarial. I'm hoping to get more time out." She leaned forward and said, quite intently, "Mickey's always distracted. He gets the worst of it, but it's not his fault. I think he needs help."
