Who: Char and Ganesh
When: Saturday afternoon, May 15, 2096
Where: the group house
What: meetings
Rating: likely PG
Status: private/incomplete

New clothes were bliss. Music outside her own head was bliss. Waking up in a warm bed that didn't have bugs and being able to take a hot shower was absolute bliss. And the best part was that most of them time, they were completely alone here while everyone else worked things out. When she'd woken up, she'd gone through the notes the others had left, put away the mess Andy had left and aired the room out from smoke, then went down into the common room to crank the music.

She danced cheerily as she sang, a hairbrush held up like a microphone as she belted out the lyrics to a favorite pop song, her voice soaring with the music, letting it override the noise inside her mind. Loud as it was, she didn't hear when the door opened, and someone else came in.

Char nodded slowly. "I'm pretty much aware of the others. They aren't nearly as aware of each other, or me. I mean, Mickey knows we're there, and Jimmy tries to ignore us, and I'm not sure Andy cares. We leave each other notes," she tapped her temple, "so we don't miss anything we ought to know, and so we're not surprised by drastic changes. But we're all different enough that holding down a job that goes to one of our specialties is impossible for another one."

"Have you ever tried another job?" Ganesh didn't mention what he was thinking--that they were, in fact, doing just that. He wondered to himself how they would manage with Katherine's team. Or if, in fact, this was going to be much of a team at all.

He still hadn't decided whether or not to take the offer. Nor was he sure it was a decision that would come easily, in the end.

"We're here, aren't we?" Char spread her hands and shrugged. "At least people here will know who we are, and won't be surprised when we change, once they get used to us. And we're getting paid just for being here, which works for me." She wrinkled her nose, making a face. "It's so good to have clean clothes that are actually mine for once."

She looked across the table at him. "What about you? You were there, in the house. What do you think about all of it?"

"I do not know..." Ganesh said slowly. "If she means what she says, then why is she doing this in secret? If she does not mean it, then why do we know who she is? There could be a lot of money in slipping it to the media."

"She could be setting us up for a fall," Char admitted. "It's a risk I'm willing to take, but my situation's different than yours. You could ask Jimmy to look into her more, if you want. See if he can ferret anything. He's good with computers, although she's government, and I don't know if he's anywhere near that good.

"I'm not into politics, but she's government, right? And we're basically going against the government, but being paid by them."

"Is it them who are paying us?" Ganesh contemplated that for a moment. "I should doubt it was directly." Then he grinned. "The American government doesn't pay 28,000 for a toilet seat for no bloody reason."

He considered her words about risk, then said, "It isn't the risk I'm worried about, so much as wishing that I understood what it is that's wanted. I won't go against the jokers. I want that promise."

"Have you asked it, blunt as all that?" Char asked.

"Not yet," he said. "And I will. But I would like to know what her investment is. I see nothing in this for her."

"Seeing as how she made sure there was something in it for each of us in those letters, I'm figuring she's got her own reason. I'd love to know what it is, but I don't think Mickey's likely to ask, and I haven't actually met her yet," Char admitted. "I'd be curious to know what she says... would you tell me, after you meet with her, even if you decide not to join up?"

"I'll tell you," Ganesh answered. "Especially if I decide not to join." He frowned, thinking about it. "Once I would have jumped at this chance. I used to read comics like crazy when I was younger--this isn't much different."

Looking into the coffee cup, he added, "Perhaps that's the problem. I'm not... what the rest of you are." Again. He'd been surrounded all his life by the Wild Card and always an outsider to it.

"I'm not either," Char pointed out. "Mickey is. I'm just the music major who got dragged into him. So you'd have one nat friend in the house, just part time." A small smile at that. "She must have something in mind for why nats, too. Saying it's because we all get along seems too easy."

He shook his head. "It does seem easy. All of this... it's too easy."

"Almost makes me wish I could read minds." The words were offhand, but the internal reaction, a sudden twist of pain and confusion in her mind, were distracting. Char pressed fingers to the bridge of her nose, swallowing the moan. She scribbled a hasty mental note asking WHY? before her eyes opened to look at Ganesh again. "Sorry."
