Entry tags:plot: the city sleeps

Who: All characters who received a black envelope.
What: meeting cont. with input from outside...
When: May 8th, 5 pm [i think?]
Where: Anhalt Building, 1005 E. Roy Street.
Status: Open; in progress.

Mickey stood off to the side, periodically nudging his ear with his hand, trying to keep the music going when the news feeds bubbled up, wanting his attention. A sharp sound of an alarm sent his senses inward, his body stilling, eyes going up and disfocused as he sought sense from the ping. Something was important, something tripped an alert...

He murmured under his breath as he listened to the news spot, not realizing he spoke aloud. "Word reporter here, live on the spot. I'm seeing some smoke coming out of the underground here." Mickey made a noise of frustration, turning as if seeking an image to go with the sound and words he was saying. "It's unclear exactly what's going on, but the police appear to be evacuating area residents from Pioneer Square just over the--" a small hiccup, his voice rising rapidly as the words poured unwittingly from mind to mouth, "Joker Underground. I don't see any jokers here, even though there's some talk on the street already about a registration bill."

His gaze snapped back into almost focus abruptly, turning as if to look at the others, even though his gaze didn't settle on anything but the wall beyond. He rocked from foot to foot, hands clamped in agitation. "What is that smoke coming from? Are we looking at terrorist activity? Police aren't- wait, no, I'm a reporter. I have a right to be here. Wait, no..."

He went silent, both hands coming up to press against his eyes, then digging at his ear. "No, no, I need more. Where is it, why can't I get it when I want it. Damnit I need that back."

"Unfortunately, yes," Tom said. "I'm sure you've heard about the Wild Card Acts, from way back in the day? Like the 1950s? And they were repealed back in the 1970s? Well, they just got signed back into law. Which means that they could make all of us with powers have to register with them, force us to work for the government, make us non-citizens because we're not normal, and hey, if they go for the one that never got signed back then, but Senator McCarthy was pushing for it, they could require mandatory sterilization so that the freaks can't breed." He shook his head. "From what he," he tipped his head toward Mickey, "was saying, it sounds like they've started in the Joker Underground."

He looked at her, his eyes wide. "I don't know whether we should all stick together, or scatter. Because all of us except one seem to have some connection to the Wild Card, and someone brought us all here together, and that's either a good thing, or a really, really bad one."

Maxxie's lips pursed in a sour expression, and when she spoke again her voice was low. "Whoever sent it tempted me. They want us to think we're here for a good reason. And they're very well observant, since I don't exactly talk about the things that were in the letter."

A sudden smile burst through, not one of her designed to be charming ones, but amusement that reached her eyes. "We have to stick together. If we split up to cover more ground, they'll pick us off, one by one. There's strength in numbers, both physically and psychologically."

Tom smiled back, because he couldn't help it, even though he was still more than a little worried. "There's also the possibility that they'll pick us off all at once if we're together. But maybe we really are here for a good reason. Shy-boy seems to think he's going to save us, or them, whoever 'they' are. Maybe the Jokers? They seem to be the ones who'd need saving about now."

"I'm really really glad Alex is home with Mom and Dad right now," Maxxie said quietly. But still, she fished out her phone to send him a message, just in case, sighing in relief when he asked what was wrong and she sent him to watch the news after assuring him she was just fine too.

The smile faded into the frown that knit her brows whenever she was trying to figure out something about people that just didn't make sense to her. "Humanity erases what is different, or what it fears. But why fear the Jokers now? Because they're afraid... that... oh. If we breed, the more times our genes enter the populace, the more likely it is that people draw the Black Queen or the Joker. So it's supremacist, trying to keep blood pure, if that's the route they're going. So what... we're gathered to fight against the idiots who seem to think dumping on us is the way to go?"

"Best case scenario, yes, that's why we're here. I hope that's why we're here, and not so we can be easily scooped up and carted off to some kind of government camp or something. Because it would be easy for them to go that route, wouldn't it? Internment camps." He needed to talk to his mother, see what she knew. But not now. Where was Callum? Shit. He managed to smile at Maxxie. "So what do you think we're supposed to do?"

"If they wanted to cart us off, why would they have brought nats? Is it dominant or recessive? I mean, will his," she nodded at Ganesh, who'd said his parents were Jokers, "kids be definitely human since he is, if it's recessive, or is he like a time bomb?" She thought about that a moment, then made a face. "Never mind, stupid question, since as far as I know my parents are nats."

She took a deep breath, sighing it out. "Not a clue. I'd figure that if someone wanted us to do something, they'd leave instructions." She hadn't entirely missed the conversation going on at the other side of the room, her voice lilting up to carry to whoever might be listening.

Shit. Jael had been listening in on the pair's conversation long enough to catch the fact that her life just got more interesting than she'd like it to be. So much for stopping running.

"I'm not going to any camp without a fight. If whoever sent the letter knows as much as they seem to about me, they ought to have thought of that." She dropped her backpack on the floor and opened it, pulling out her steel-toed shoe. Sitting down, she started unlacing her work shoes. "Anyone tries to mess with us, they get their ass handed to them."

Tom grinned. "I think you probably won't have too many people here disagreeing with you on that. Maybe whoever sent us these letters was counting on it. Mine mentioned that Big Brother is listening. Guess that's not wrong." He inclined his head towards Ganesh and Del.

"So we're going with the assumption we've been brought here for a good reason, not a bad one. Because we are willing to kick ass and take names, and won't just take this lying down. Right?" He looked around, not sure who was even listening to him, other than Maxxie and this new woman whose name he hadn't gotten. "I'm Tom, by the way."

"Mine said something about finding a reason to stop running. Not looking good on that front right now." She slipped into her steel-toed shoes and slipped the other pair into her backpack.

She nodded, glancing around the room. Interesting grab-bag someone had put together. She turned back to the young man. "Jael. Nice meeting you, even if the circumstances are kind of crazy."

"Nice meeting you," he echoed. "This is my friend Maxxie. Why is stopping running not looking good? Maybe the point is that now you're going to be forced to make a stand?"

"Jael? Really?" Maxxie blinked in surprise at the name. "Love the name. So, what's bringing you into this group?" She couldn't remember if she'd overheard anything earlier. She rocked back on her heels, then up onto her toes, starting to feel hemmed in.

She glanced back at Tom. "And the real question is, how, exactly, are we supposed to make a stand? Against the whole government?"

"Little steps," Gabe spoke up although he'd been quiet for a long time. "That's all you can do. We can do." He glanced down. "Um. I mean, like, the unions did once. Or resistance fighters. Uh... that's kind of how this country started, yeah?"

"Good point," Tom said. "I just kind of wish we had some idea of who was setting us up here. But I'm not sure that's going to happen, so, we make do on our own. I wonder what's going on with the others?" He looked over to the group huddled around an upturned folding chair.

"The problem with little steps is that they're taking big steps right now," Maxxie pointed out. "If we can only take little steps, they're going to run right over us. I'm all for politics -- it's one of my majors after all. But do we have time for subtlety?"

Mickey walked over towards the group, his hands in the pockets of his battered army jacket, shoulders slightly hunched. He glanced at Jael when she spoke about running, and Maxxie when she mentioned politics.

"They promised me silence," he offered up. "But I'm not any good at politics."

"We've decided we were most likely brought here for good," Tom said without preamble. "We've also decided we're not going down without a fight, if it comes to that. Beyond that, we still have no idea why we're here, but they found a bug. So someone is listening. Pretty sure no one has decided yet where to go and what to do from here. Any ideas?"

Jael smiled slightly. "Yeah? Thanks." Jael patted her legs. "My letter had to do with running." Mostly. "So I guess someone is interested in my legs. Or the fact that I do parkour." Exactly how somebody knew that much about her was beyond her, and kind of disturbing.
