Entry tags:character: gabriel wilder, character: zadkiel thrush

Who: Zadkiel Thrush and Gabriel Wilder
What: Zadkiel wants to meet and discuss a number of things.
When: Friday, July 2
Where: The clinic, then who knows?
Status: Open; in progress

He wondered why Zadkiel wanted to talk.

It wasn't a question that Gabe would ask but it weighed on his mind as he lit his cigarette and inhaled the smoke, feeling the warmth against his lips and simply holding it there for that reason alone. He leaned against the wall, feeling cool red brick press against his cheek as he took another drag. Six o'clock and he wondered if Zadkiel would come outside or if he'd need to go in.

There were a lot of things that Gabe was wondering- it was easiest to stick with the same things than to look back on the others. Particularly after his conversation with Maxxie. Everything repeats, he told himself. Especially other people's advice.

"It's okay," he said. It was a relief to talk about it, but he was treading on very thin ice. "It's just... we're raised to have absolute faith, like I said. And as God is the Father... our fathers are god-like in our families. So doubting the Elders, their directives is doubting him, and doubting him is unthinkable, but what-" He stopped himself abruptly, his eyes widening as he realized that too much was spilling out. He should have said that he didn't want to talk about it.

"What...?" Gabe leaned forward, gently insisting with a tone of voice.

"What they do is unthinkable too," Zadkiel mumbled.

He reached out gently, his hand resting on the younger man's shoulder and offering comfort, if not physical closeness. Gabe didn't know whether or not to touch and he felt the strain of it in his blood, the slight pressure in his stomach growing and building.

Yet, strangely, he wasn't afraid, this time, of any Avinoam that his thoughts might call.

Zadkiel leaned into the touch, grateful for the comfort being offered. "I'm lucky," he whispered, his voice hoarse. "Lucky I could hide my ace. Lucky it didn't show up 'til later."

The pressure tightened, then released inside of Gabe's body. The faint sound of someone else a few yards away echoed, rustling in the grass. Gabe kept his hand against Zadkiel's shoulder, still steady, and said, "It wasn't your fault."

Zadkiel ducked his head, shaking it hard. "I didn't even really try to stop them. I was too scared of giving myself away."

"It's not your fault," Gabe repeated, though his voice was shaking. His imagination was getting the best of him- it had to be. And yet, he knew what the world was doing to Wild Cards... was this that much worse?

"He didn't even get a name," Zadkiel choked. "He didn't have a chance. None of them do. Everyone out here is suddenly so scared they're going to start killing wild cards. Like it's new. It's been my whole life, and my father's and his before him... back to when they broke away. They'll say he was stillborn. 'Didn't make it', they'll say. And they'll look at Eva like she did something wrong. They took away her son, my nephew, and I didn't do anything!"

"I'm sorry," he said as he reached out and gave Zadkiel a hug. He didn't know what he was sorrier for- the fact that Zadkiel had been unable to stop what had happened or that he had been forced to leave. Or, perhaps, the fact that the only person who was making the attempt to put any right to any of this was the least able to do it. Him.

His eyes stung as he squeezed harder for a moment, then let him go. He hadn't asked to complete the touch and it was better to step away.

Zadkiel reluctantly let go, not wanting to make Gabe uncomfortable, and aware that they were in a public place. He curled in on himself. "Please don't tell anyone," he breathed. "Please. No one is supposed to know that, above all else."

Gabe heard a low snort behind them. He looked over his shoulder to see another version of himself, staring at the two of them with utter contempt. The man simply walked away, shaking his head, and Gabe stepped in front of Zadkiel, hoping that he hadn't seen.

"No. I won't tell anyone. I'm not like that." His fingers reached out, nearly touching Zadkiel's shoulder, then dropping again.
