What? (George)
One second he was talking to George and trying to comfort her about his own death, and the next he's in his own apartment, staring at the ceiling of his bedroom, as alive as he'd ever remembered being.

He could actually feel his own heart beating hard enough that it might have broken out of his chest at any moment.

Through the strangeness of it all, he couldn't help but feel concern for how George might be taking this. She had been worried that he was going to move on, and his sudden disappearance must have looked like just that.

Dexter fumbled on his bedside table without looking at it, finding his phone and dialing George.

He listened to it ring.

"No. The City's just fucking with me."

George peered at her friend before stepping in. He looked alive, but so did she. He looked like himself, but to reapers he would look like himself. She needed a video camera to test that part out, really.

If they had drugs she could test his metabolism. But she didn't think he had any and she knew nothing about his alcohol tolerance. That really only left one option.

"Sure."

George went straight for the kitchen and helped herself to the fridge, snatching the first beer she found. She was going to need more than this and wondered where he hid the good stuff.

Dexter watched George. She was acting a little strangely.

"Are you alright?" He followed after a moment and wondered if she should be drinking that, but decided that she'd earned the right to drink as much as she wanted, considering what she'd been through. Besides, she didn't just stop getting older even though she was dead, right? Just stopped physically aging.

If she hadn't died, George would totally be legally allowed to drink. And as far as she knew, there wasn't really an age restriction on allowing undead people to drink.

"I'm just kind of freaked out."

George started to chug.

"Hold this for me, okay?"

The reaper handed him the beer bottle and two seconds later grabbed one of his kitchen knives and cut him. Not a big cut. Just a ... regular sized one.

There was a beer in his hand, and then there was a knife against his skin.

Instinct tried to kick in, Dex's muscles tensed to whip her around into a headlock. In his day to day life, it was only people he was trying to kill that did things like pull knives on him.

He stopped himself, and stared at his arm where the cut was.

"What the hell, George?"

George visibly flinched out of reflex when he tensed. But then he stopped himself George set the slightly bloody knife down.

"I just had to make sure!"

She picked up some paper towels and wiped away the blood from the cut. He was still bleeding. She dabbed at the blood again. He was still bleeding.

It was then that she looked relieved. It would have been nice to have Dexter around with her as a reaper for the next couple of decades, but it wasn't really a fate she could wish on a friend.

"Make sure of what?!" Dexter watched as she did what he thought at first was trying to clean him up, but realized she was just watching him bleed.

He took his arm away from her and went into the bathroom where he cleaned up the cut and wrapped it in some gauze. She had picked a really awkward spot to try to put bandaids, and he didn't have any big enough. He was just glad it wasn't very deep.

A little grumpy, he returned to the kitchen.

"You should probably explain yourself now."

"I had to make sure you weren't like me!"

George's petulance faded and left a frowning girl in its place. The expression was nearly identical to the picture in her obituary. George had always hated pictures.

"You were dead and then all of a sudden not! That shit doesn't happen. I'm glad you're alive but ... I didn't want you to be stuck here either."

It took him a moment to process what she meant by like her. When he finally got it, his annoyance washed away.

"I can't say why it happened. But it did. And I'm pretty sure that I'm not like you. Especially now." Dexter glanced down at his arm.

He got himself a beer out of the fridge. Because now he really needed it.

"You just want to be the only reaper." He joked. It might have been too early for jokes. He had no idea.

"Yeah, right."

George picked up her beer and finished it off like a proud alcoholic. She then put the knife in the sink and rinsed off the remains of the blood like a polite guest.

"You don't have anything harder, do you? Vodka? Tequila?"

She could tell by looking at his fridge he did not have enough beer.

"There's some vodka in the freezer." It had appeared when Deb had, and hadn't gone away even though it seemed like she'd been ripped right back out of the city. Which was good for her, considering the way that she was taking it.

He watched her a little confused. It hadn't occurred to him that she would react so strongly to him dying. He hadn't really thought that there would be anybody on the planet - or any planet anywhere for that matter - who would even care that he was dead. He could, in fact, count over a dozen people who would have celebrated his death.

Lucky for him, none of them were here. Unless he counted Aeon. She might like to see him dead now.

Dexter was in no hurry to finish off his beer, and leaned against the counter.

"Can you even get drunk?"
