Mastering the Art of French Cooking [Leto, Threadmas]
Oswin had become something of a fixture in Leto's apartment. With the exception of conversation the dalek shell never moved, staying motionless in the living room. Despite housing a supposedly human consciousness it lacked the need to move or even fidget. And in the dead of night, the dalek was an uneasy presence with only dim ambient light to outline its existence.

It was easy to wonder what Oswin did all day, and it was easy to forget that the classical music that frequently played in the apartment wasn't the radio being left idly on, but her own broadcast. It wasn't constant and it was hard to say if she realized she was even doing it.

To Oswin, there was plenty to do inside her imagined shuttle. She cooked. She cleaned. She decorated. She reinforced the door almost daily. There was ritual to keep her sane, or insane depending upon your perspective, and it was sometimes very time consuming. Every so often she would peer over at her view screen, particularly when Leto was in view. But given their circumstances they were less roommates and more long distance video pen pals.

She never followed him into his room or around the apartment. Oswin was just simply there. Some day, she realized, that wasn't going to be enough.

It was mid-afternoon and completing much of her daily ritual, Oswin started to prepare her kitchenette for another souffle attempt.

"EGG... STIR..."

That was strange to hear the cold, robotic voice of the dalek. Whenever possible Oswin preferred to broadcast her own human voice through the appliances in Leto's apartment.

“Sorry," she called out. "I must have pressed the wrong button.”

He leaned back and considered. A tree would be easy; there were plenty of them lining the streets, though he didn't know exactly why she wanted one. The decorations, all right, that made sense -- holiday and all. Stockings... that was a strange requisition, to be certain. But then she mentioned inviting others, and a little bit of him sank with that.

"All right," he said more slowly. "I haven't met many yet." Pursing his lips, he thought through the encounters he'd had. "The first woman I met was named Baba Yaga -- but she doesn't seem the type to be interested in such things as this. There was Wash. He would be amenable, I suspect. He is tending after a young girl, Maxine, and if you're all right with children, we could invite them."

And the last one he knew... Leto frowned. "There was the time traveler I mentioned -- the Doctor. I don't know if he'd want to come. We could always invite him."

Leto turned his head and looked over at Oswin. "What do you think about those? Have you met any of them? What about yourself? Friends you'd like to see?"

"The Doctor?" Doctor was a very common title, but how many time travelling doctors were there? "This Doctor? ...Large chin? Unhealthy affection for bow ties? Alien Time Lord with two hearts?"

What did that mean if the Doctor were in The City? Oswin wasn't sure. Surely he'd have his companions. If not the ones she'd met, then someone else. The Doctor always had companions.

"...There's Abe. He lives in the pond at the park. Tinkerbell, we could find out if she's still in town. I've met Wash, he's lovely. I had no idea he had a child."

Oswin was trying to contain her excitement. A real and proper Christmas holiday!

"...The Doctor? Are you sure?"

Leto nodded to all of the descriptors she'd given the Doctor, though he hesitated at the 'Alien Time Lord with two hearts' bit. "Not sure about that -- but he did have a bow tie."

Leto's own sense of fashion was still routed deeply in Arrakis -- but that sort of clothing was impossible to find here in the City, and even if it could be found, it would be dreadfully out of place. Leto knew enough by now about the fashion expected in this world to know that what the Doctor wore was not in fashion. Yet, The Doctor dressed as if he were comfortable being out of place. Good for him, Leto thought.

As for Leto, something of his aristocratic blood had stayed with him, enough to make him want to be careful about how he presented himself - if only just enough to keep him from seeming wholly strange. He was that, though. Strange.

"In the pond?" Leto asked, his eyebrows shooting up. Perhaps he wasn't as strange as he'd believed! "Well, all right, then. Would you like me to manage the invitations?"

In truth, Leto expected to manage most of it. Oswin didn't have hands.

"Yes! What do you think? The two of us will have Christmas Eve and then we can invite the others over for a few hours on Christmas? Traditions are different, not even always on the same day, but..."

She felt a little bit again like a child at Christmas.

"...I have to find you a Christmas gift! And, well, someone to wrap it. Alright. If you can manage the invitations, I'll do some shopping, we can decorate together and it'll be fantastic!"

"Oh, are there gifts involved, too? What makes a good Christmas gift?"

He was trying very hard to keep his own excitement tamped down. She'd just said that they would spend 'Christmas Eve' together alone. Alone. Leto knew he was being foolish. The ... Oswin... whatever she... it.. was, she wasn't human, and she wouldn't ever be. He couldn't expect anything of her.

Then, he thought, considering the Golden Path and the future of his own impossible love life, he realized that all he'd ever expected anyway from any love interest was good companionship and a modicum of caring. Oswin had that.

"When is Christmas Eve and Christmas, then?" he finally asked. "How long do we have to get all this together?"

"Christmas Eve is the night of the 24th. Christmas is the 25th. We don't have much time, do we?" Oswin laughed. It would be rushed, and it would be mad, but it would be undeniably fun.

"What makes a good Christmas present? Well... it has to be a surprise. It depends on who your getting the present for. It can be something thoughtful like, home baked treats for a neighbor or... it just depends!"

She was curious as to what Leto would come up with.

"Alright, I better go! I'll get started on buying the decorations and the food. We'll meet back here and I'll do my best to talk you through it."

"Right, ah... Right."

He gave her something like a smile, and headed to the door, opening it for her so she could get started. For Leto, he still had mundane tasks to complete before he left -- finding his shoes, finding his keys, figuring out how in the world to start on this task...

She was going to get the decorations and food -- however she thought she could. But he'd leave that to her. The rest... He was going to need a lot of help. He'd ask for it; there was no other way. And, truth be told, he could use a few more friends here anyway.

"See you in a little bit," he said, and this time the smile was real.
