All work and no play (Tony)
Annie was exhausted.

There had been an idea brewing in her head for a while, taking up all of her thoughts. Even when she was at Fixit she was really not all there. Her brain hovered around the idea when she was talking with other people, danced around it when she was trying to sleep. Finally, she had gathered what she needed in order to make it a reality, and had set about the task of seeing the idea to fruition.

She had been up for days working on the schematics and hammering out some last kinks. Building was about to begin, she was just on the edge of it. But she'd already run herself ragged. She'd tried a few different energy drinks, high octane energy bars that tasted like cardboard, and even attempted a few exercise machines to get her blood pumping.

In the end though, she wound up sitting on a stool, bent over onto her arms at one of the work tables, sound asleep. There was a screwdriver in one hand, precariously close to poking her in the face. One wrong move and she'd likely jolt awake because of the scrape of metal. She'd so wanted to start the actual work on the idea, and here she was, slumbering instead.

Jarvis had dimmed the lights of the room and started some low, soothing music. He'd ushered the arms out of the workspace so that they wouldn't inadvertently wake Annie somehow. It was a toss up on if she would have been thankful or mad if she knew. That driven part of her had told Jarvis to keep her up and had asked him to provide the names of those drinks and pseudo-foods she'd had earlier. But the rational part of her had been telling her she needed rest, and the idea would still be there after.

Tony came down to the workshop, whistling and dancing slightly to a tune in his head when he noticed the lights and the turned down music, slowing and arching a brow.

He smiled when he noticed the sleeping figure inside, and opened the door, slipping in and over to her. He gently pried the screwdriver out of her hand, putting it down and then bending, ever so carefully scooping her off the stool. He'd fallen off them before for sleeping in a similar situation, it was never pleasant.

Turning he carried her over to the latest hotrod project that he had still set up in the space, the movie screen hanging ahead. He considered it for a moment, then carefully sat down inside, letting the petite beauty rest on his lap, her head on his shoulder. He reached under the seat, careful not to jostle her much more, and pulled out the blanket he kept there for resting, covering her with it.

"Jarvis, put on the news, subtitles, no sound," he said, deciding he'd catch up on City affairs while his girlfriend rested. They hadn't been able to see each other much lately, both wrapped up in their own projects and problems. It was a nice surprise to find her here, even if she was asleep. Settling back across the bench seat, one leg folded on the leather, Tony held Annie close, stroking her hair as he watched the news.

Annie was so zonked out that she didn't even stir as she was moved from one place to the other. When they were settled, her body responded to the comfort and warmth by snuggling in as close as it could possibly get, but she didn't wake up.

She didn't dream, passing that level of slumber for something much deeper. Not being asleep on the stool made the nap more sound, and when she finally did begin to wake, it was a pleasant thing. She was actually rested.

It took her a moment to remember where she was, and then a moment to figure out that she hadn't just wandered over to lay down on her own. There was a body under her. Breathing, warm.

Annie smiled up at Tony, watching him a moment before moving to let him know that she was awake. She wondered how long she'd been out, but that seemed like a cliche thing to ask.

"Thank you." She said, instead.

He'd finished the news and stared in on some weird kid's cartoon when Annie's voice reached his ears. He looked down, then smiled, placing a chaste kiss on her lips.

"Couldn't stand to see this beautiful face bruised from a fall, or punctured by a screwdriver," he replied, running his thumb over the soft curvature of her cheek. He smiled and shifted slightly, still not relinquishing his hold on her. She was warm and he was feeling... not frisky. Just playful, and he wanted to hold onto her for as long as he could.

He kissed the corner of her mouth.

"I want to hear what you're up to over there, apart from sleeping," he said. Then nodded at the show. "Right after you help me work out exactly what this is supposed to be teaching kids."

Annie was thankful that Tony had come in and found her. She imagined that eventually she probably would have fallen off the stool and hurt herself. Nobody had perfect balance in their sleep. Well, probably nobody. Nobody she could think of, anyway. She was also glad because she hadn't realized that she'd fallen asleep with the screwdriver in her hand. She hadn't been actively using it, just fiddling with it to try to keep herself awake.

She glanced at the screen and tried to come up with an answer. "I think it's teaching kids to smoke pot." Annie said it thoughtfully. "I can see no other way to get enjoyment out of that."

His arms were wrapped around her tightly, and she liked it, so she didn't even try to move. She did glance at the work table, though. Half sad that she hadn't managed to get anything going before she'd passed out, and half glad that she hadn't because she was sure she would have had to start over anyway.

"I got this idea in my head. I'm sure you've had one like it. The sort of idea that just won't let you be. It's taken a while to work out, but I think that I've finally gotten it to a point where it can be built. It's not even something really helpful, or ... I don't know." She shook her head. "Just a thing that I thought would be cool. Before today all the prototype simulations I've had Jarvis run ended in some kind of epic meltdown."

Tony's eyebrows lifted, and he chuckled. "Yeah, definitely see that now," he said. Then his kissed the tip of her nose. "You really are a genius, never just chalk it up to your other gifts," he smirked.

He considered what she described and then shrugged. "You'll figure it out. Or let me in on it, then we'll both figure it out. Probably me first, since it would turn into a competition, and you know I can't lose," he said with a grin.

Even though he'd promised to let her go just after she helped analyze the show, he didn't. He was comfortable, she was comfortable. He wasn't going to let her go, not any time soon.

Annie laughed a bit when he mentioned the competition. She couldn't imagine getting in one with him and winning at the end of it. At least, not if she played fair and didn't use her abilities. It would be a fair fight, she thought, but Tony's determination and need to not be the loser would likely give him an edge she wouldn't have.

"Well." She didn't want him to think it was silly or frivolous, which it kind of was. "I thought it would be really neat if there could be a device that could infer whatever mood you were in. It would use that information to adjust your house lighting and the music. I was also thinking that it could use scents and pheromones to help alter the bad ones, calm you down if you're mad, cheer you up if you're depressed. Ease anxiety."

Annie waited to see what he would think of the idea. The thing that had so consumed her.

He paused, thinking it over. Mulling. Then he slowly grinned, a mischevious grin.

"You're enticing me," he said. "Putting the idea of putting pheramones in the air when I wanted something. It really wouldn't be fair for people like me to use, since I'm so enticing already." Especially when lust was a very common feeling for him to have.

He did give it some honest consideration, however, and then nodded. "You'd have to make it programable. Not everybody wants sad music when they're depressed. But, prepared correctly, it could revolutionize the idea of home comfort."

"The user interface and individualization were the easy parts." Annie nodded, knowing what Tony meant. There were times when she was down and just wanted to be that way, but most of the time she wanted to get out of it, and would listen to music or watch shows or movies to lighten her mood.

"It's the actual mood detection that I got stuck on. Obviously using things like biorhythms is a part of it, but how to tell the difference between anxiety and the body after high activity, that's the tough part. The nuances of human chemistry." She made a face. "I wasn't really great in chemistry. And I'm pretty sure that somebody feeling anxious isn't going to want to listen to music that somebody might want to hear while they're working out or something. I'd like it to all be non-verbal, hands off."

Tony considered it for a moment. "It probably means we just have to map the brain better," he said, shrugging a shoulder. "Just because thousands of scientists before us couldn't do it well, doesn't mean we can't figure it out together."

It could be very abrupt, how he switched from competative to cooperative. But he did switch, and in all seriousness he wanted to be part of Annie's success, even if he had to put his own aside once in a while to achieve it. "We can start by mapping out my brain, though we should get a few normal humans too. You know, to make sure their limitations are accomodated."

He let out his own chuckle, then stopped anything she might say with another kiss. "But we can't get too involved in this. We need at least one night to catch up. I feel like I haven't seen you in ages, and that's just unacceptable. We'll have dinner tonight, when we've worked out the kinks in your simulations. And then we'll both get a decent night's sleep." And she had to know him well enough by now to know sleep didn't come before other means of reconnecting.

Annie nodded, mapping the brain would truly be the best route to go. She was very glad that Tony was suggesting they do it together, since she wasn't really sure how she would have gone about it on her own. She could get into machinery easily. Humans were a different matter.

"We'll have to compensate for arrogance." She teased when he mentioned the differences in 'normal' brains and his own. The truth was, Annie liked the way Tony was. His confidence and lack of modesty was refreshing. He was good and he knew it and didn't try to hide it. That didn't mean she wouldn't play a little when it came down to it. "I wonder if ego could be programmed in."

She nodded again, willing to take the break that he was suggesting. "It has been too long since we've just had a night of fun. Not that I haven't been having fun working on this and other projects. But it'd be nice to be out and drink too much and be silly." Annie snuggled in a bit more, not quite ready to get up yet. "I'm going to reconnect with you so much that you won't have the energy to walk after."

He snorted, but in a friendly way, and demanded a longer kiss from her for it. "True, maybe I shouldn't be the one you work with if you're trying to get an average brain," he growled playfully, one hand moving down to stroke her side. He could never be irritated by her, after all. Upset and put off, maybe, if she was, but never from these joustings. These were good, these were essential to keep him as humble as he would ever be.

The second half of her promise made his eyebrows go up and his heartbeat quicken. He grinned, then turned abruptly, putting her down on the soft, rich leather of the car interior as he put his body over hers, pulling the blanket out of the way quickly before he stopped, then smiled, supporting himself over her. "If I won't be able to walk after I hate to think how well you'll be doing," he grinned, letting himself down to kiss her long and deeply, stroking her side with the hand that didn't need to support his weight. It had definitely been too long to keep him from feeling playful and frisky, and his growing adoration of the girl below him only encouraged he already unrestrained behavior.

After a moment he pulled back. "Maybe we should leave the mapping till tomorrow," he said, shrugging a shoulder. "After all, as far as brains go, mine's pretty big to be the first one you try to map."

"I think there will have to be a wide range of brains mapped in order for this to work with the kinds of people who are here." She was sure that there were a lot of different types here. The easiest would be, more than likely, the City born people who didn't seem to have much variation. Then there were people like Tony and Fred. And herself, really. Would genetic mutation make a difference in how brains worked? Would Dinah's powers create different needs?

Annie giggled happily as Tony shifted them. "I might need a whole day off." She admitted. "To recover."

She had missed Tony, and now she was feeling exactly how much she'd missed him. Their conversations, the closeness, his mind and his body. Annie vowed that she wasn't going to let so much time go by without having some kind of date night. Especially not when they were working in the same building. They needed to have time together that had nothing to do with work or projects and that was more than passing one another in a hallway.

His kisses were nice and his touches were lovely. Annie ran a hand along the side of his neck and into his hair. And made a bit of an exasperated noise when he pulled away.

"Considering you're going to have to teach me how to map a brain in the first place, I think you've got all the say on when it happens."

"Oh do I?" Tony arched a brow, sitting upright completely, a grin on his face.

"I might have not told him that, Miss," Jarvis offered, but a moment too late. Tony smirked.

"If I have a say I think I'll delay the project a bit," he said. "You know, so we can work out how much we all have to do," he said, voice barely above a whisper. Then he spoke more firmly. "Young lady, if you're going to learn anything as complicated as a human brain, then you'll need at least a day off to rest and get ready."

He leaned down to capture her lips in a long, thorough kiss before he pulled back and winked at her. If she needed to get some amount of the project out of her way before she took time off he'd understand, but he was just as eager as she to take some time off and enjoy each other, man and woman, boyfriend and girlfriend. Lover and lover.

"I'll make Jarvis make us a reservation someplace fancy," he said, leaving her more than enough room to tell him 'no'. In his mind a night to dress up for, like one of their first dates, to look forward to and play with before they returned to the amazing monotany of their combined genius. "We've done Italian and French. Maybe we should try the fine dining the Greek way?"

"I can see where that would have made for some good advice if it'd come a few seconds earlier." Annie could see the error she'd made even before Tony started talking.

"Luckily, I'm at a point where stopping for a bit won't make much of a difference." She said this to Tony as much as she said it to Jarvis. The truth was, this was the perfect time to stop. Before she got into the actual physical work.

She watched Tony move, the confident way that he carried himself. A lot of people would have been put off by him making a statement as he'd just made, but it was part of what Annie liked. The man could work as hard as he played, and when he wanted to play no amount of work was going to stand in his way.

"I haven't tried Greek food yet." Annie admitted. "Are we talking fancy, or super fancy?"

He wardrobe had grown considerably since she'd started dating Tony, she now had things in there that could have been worn to the coronation of a new queen, instead of just casual clothes like jeans and tshirts. He'd made sure she was ready for any kind of event that might happen, and some she was sure never would. On top of that, he often told her to go by something new for bigger occasions, and she wondered if this was going to be another one of those.

She'd never been a clotheshorse before, but Annie felt herself slipping into a general appreciation for them, and was surely more at ease in them now. She always still felt like a princess or movie star when she put them on, that wouldn't change, now, however, on the outside she seemed like she never wore anything else.

Tony considered it for a moment, then shrugged. "I dunno. Jarvis, what're the good Greek restaurants around here? Fancy or super fancy?"

Jarvis considered it for a moment. "I believe, sir, by your definitions, that it would be just regular fancy," he said. Tony grinned. It was useful to have an AI who understood him around.

"So we can either go business casual, or you could outshine all of the women in the City again, just for kicks. Up to you, really, you know I'm pretty enough to pull anything you want off."

"Business casual is so boring." Annie made a face and then smiled. She felt like their first real date in a long time should be done up right. Of course, it meant she was going to have to go home and change. But maybe that didn't mean that she and Tony had to split up.

"Hey, you've never seen the shop, or my apartment. Want to come with me?" Of course, maybe Tony had seen Fixit on his own. She wouldn't put it past him to run by on one of the days she wasn't there, just to see the setup.

"I've got a little red dress that I haven't had an occasion to wear yet."

"So your real question is, am I able to resist the thought of watching you slide into a little red dress," Tony said, then grinned. They both already knew the answer to that one.

He disentangled himself from her and carefully got up, holding out his hands to pull her up as well, then stretched slightly, looking at her.

"Apartment, no," he said, then shrugged. "Honestly. I'm not sure why you still have it. It would make it a lot easier to find you and get ready for dates if you were here full time. You know, with all your stuff." Tony could be very direct about things when he wanted to be, and then other times he preferred to let others state things bluntly. He sometimes surprised himself with what was and wasn't something he'd be willing to say himself.

Then again, the first seven or eight times he'd asked Pepper to move in with him she'd said no, wanting her own space and independence. She was fiery that way, but Tony's not-quite-nonesxistant feelings had still been hurt somewhat by the refusal. And Annie, well, had the same kind of fire. It was one of the things Tony was so attracted to. And it was probably a girlfriend requirement so she could deal with him.

Annie didn't have to run Tony's words through her head to know what he was asking. For once, her mind was able to get past any self doubt and disbelief she might have had and understand that Tony was inviting her to move into the building.

"Mostly because of Fixit." She shrugged. "It's the home the City gave to me, and it made sense to be close to the shop. It's also the first place that I've lived alone, so I guess it's also sort of sentimental."

Annie wasn't saying no to the offer, but she wasn't saying yes, either. Really, she didn't know what she should say. On one hand, it would be nice to be able to drag herself just a couple of floors and flop into bed after a long night of working here. On the other, it was really nice to do that when she was done with the shop, too.

No matter what happened, she knew that she wasn't going to give up Fixit. Especially not after Christmas and how it felt to help people.

She took Tony's hands and let him pull her up. A wry smile crossing her lips.

"Sell me on the amenities, Mr Stark."

"Well," He took a step backwards, dragging her easily as if they were doing a ballroom dance, one arm sliding around her. "Apart from state of the art R&R facilities, which you already have access to. There's the 24/7 automated butler, there's anything you want about ten minutes away.... the jacuzzi on the seventieth floor patio is nice...." He paused, then grinned down at her. "Then there's me. And Bruce isn't such a bad housemate either. Even if his broad's a bit off her rocker."

He paused. "I'm not saying give up your other place. Just... stay here more. Put more of your stuff around. Stay here more, with me, so I don't have to wait to see you in your little red dress." He leaned down and kissed her lips gently, then her forehead. "Think about it. Mull it over. Then say yes and make the toothbrush you keep here the main one."

The easy way that he moved was a testament to the life that Tony had lived. Annie had never seen grace like his in the people she'd been friends with back home. They didn't have the luxury of the time it would take to become like that, and they didn't have the sense of safety it would need to tag along after.

She tried to stay in step as best she could. Walking in heels was one thing, dancing alone was one thing, being ushered around by another living being was kind of new still.

"You make a strong argument." She smiled, returning his kisses easily and eagerly. While she didn't know if she could give up the apartment over the shop, this idea of keeping it around as a backup appealed to her. It was the best of both worlds, really. "I'll have to know what color your toothbrush is, so mine doesn't clash."

There were quite a few talents Tony held, simply because he was spoiled his entire life and only had to work when he wanted to, which left him a multitude of time to cultivate special habits and talents. He did pause, however, not wanting her to lose her footing, and when she mentioned the color of his toothbrush he paused, a blank look on his face.

"Yours is blue, sir," Jarvis said helpfully.

"Oh right," he said, then grinned. "So, any color but blue. Unless you want blue, in which case I'll make an intern go buy you a blue one and me anything but lime green."

Nobody who knew him might have thought a discussion about toothbrush color could leave an immobile smirk from his face, but knowing he would have Annie around a lot more than he had been, well... that was something to celebrate. He stopped moving, hand going down to her hips and pulling her close so he could give her a much more serious kiss, from which he barely pulled back. "I suppose we'll have to go to dinner fancy now, to celebrate."

Annie giggled at the fact that Tony didn't know his own toothbrush color. She supposed that things like that weren't totally important to a man like him. But when something was used every day like that, she felt that there should be a vague recollection of what it looked like.

"I'll find a color that isn't blue." she didn't want him to think that he still had a blue one and end up using hers. They might kiss and be very close and intimate, but using somebody else's toothbrush was a different thing entirely.

Her arms were wrapped around his neck by the end of the statement. Funny, she thought, looking up at him, how she'd found herself here because of another version of him on a different planet - or whatever - and she'd mistaken the two of them.

"We'll blow them all out of the water."

Tony shrugged a shoulder at the giggle. He rarely remembered things of little importance to him. Hell, he rarely remembered things that were important to him, but not tech related.

For now, though, he was just more than pleased that Annie was moving in.

"Well, we'll get your stuff over here later, then. Or just get you new stuff to put here," he said, leaning down and giving her long kiss. "For now, let's go take a look at that little red dress."

Annie almost lost herself in the kiss, her brain veering toward the idea that they didn't need to go out. They could just stay in and find some celebration here, between the two of them.

But her excitement for him to see the little apartment was just a touch greater, and she finally pulled away and took his hand. He had shared much with her, and she knew parts of him and his personality because of the environment around him. She wanted Tony to be able to do the same thing. To see an environment that was hers, and hers alone.

Getting to Fixit and the apartment was easy. The City didn't even try to keep them away. She was grateful for that. There was a small debate in her head about just taking him right to the place she lived, instead of going through the shop, but it seemed that today the back of Fixit butted up against another building. Which meant no back stairs.

So through the shop it was. Annie unlocked the door with her key, and at the same time, with her powers, she disabled the alarm. She flicked the lights on at the same time she opened the door and stepped inside.

The shop looked as it always looked. Organized but a little haphazard. Annie liked it that way.

She looked back at Tony as she started toward the door that led to the stairs in back.
