target! (open)
Lorne did not spend all of his time in Caritas. Most of it, yes. But not well and truly ALL.

Today, before the club opened, he had errands to run. There was laundry detergent that needed getting, and new light bulbs, and a fresh set of towels to replace the ones that a belligerant client had destroyed after barging into Lorne's room.

He decided on a store with a big target on the side. It was like Wal-Mart or K-Mart or something. Lorne didn't spend a lot of time in places like this, but the City put it close by, so off he went.

It was very bright inside, and there were no windows. And a lot of people stared at Lorne.

"Greeeat," he muttered, smiling at each staring person in turn.

He'd just get in, get out, and get back to the club.
With the weirdos.
The weirdos who liked him and didn't stare at him.

The crone needed a little room. Eric wasn't crowding her, but absence did make the heart grow fonder and the rest of her...well. Baba needed to be on the move sometimes, and Eric understood this. He'd let her roam, wreck a little havoc, then be very happy when she returned to tell her tales. She enjoyed the same of him, even when a certain female was involved in the mix.

So, today she picked a shopping area. She'd discovered what it was when she first got here. Not this one in particular but places like it. The people within were usually easily nudged into very amusing antics. Then again, there were even times the crone bought what she needed. Say a sweet little inexpensive dress. Something that she wouldn't mind getting ruined, not that she had much she cared about. At least not physical possessions.

She walked through as the door opened on its own for her. She understood it was science, but there was some magic to it. If she were of a particular investigative bent, she'd have learned all about it. She wasn't, not in this anyway.

Her brow lifted as she caught something green and red, and moving? While not the usual colors for the Adversary's ogres and goblins, the brief glimpses did have her on alert - not with fear, but curiosity and perhaps a hint of anger. Now this, this was something she would investigate. Gathering a little magic to her, feeling the ring heat up a little from it, she began to stalk the mostly green with red accented creature.

Lorne was standing in the bathroom decor section of the store, just between the fabric shower curtains and bathmats. That was where they kept the towels. A bright flourescent light over his head dimmed and brightened with a low hum.

He was glad he had his sunglasses on.

And since no one was in the aisle, Lorne was fairly happy. He could pick out his new towels in peace. There were many colors to choose from; the choices took up the entire aisle.

He felt like he could see someone, just nearby, and turned his head, but didn't see anything or anyone. Lorne shrugged and went back to whistling and looking at the towels. Probably a kid trying to sneak a peak at the freak.

"Oooh!" he exclaimed happily. "Tangerine. That's a color I can get behind."

He started to pick up some of the bright orange towels. The bathroom that adjoined his bedroom in Caritas was mostly brown, but the orange would accent it nicely.

The crone stepped from around the corner, brow raised. Her lips set an amused smile as she just watched the strange green creature pick and choose from bathroom decor? She walked quietly up to the very tall creature, not too close.

"It's a striking color. Then again, so are you." She could call down magic, create havoc, but for now, she just stood there. She wasn't what she used to be when she first got to the City. Her time with Eric, sharing their blood, had started to make the inside match the outside. There was still age in her eyes, but there was very little to no disconnect between what was seen and possibly felt - her face was her face. She wasn't exactly the old crone hiding behind a pretty young thing's face anymore.

Lorne blinked behind his glasses, and turned his head. He was glad he hadn't imagined that someone was there. He'd just been expecting a little kid or something, not a grown woman.

He did not have to be an empath to know that she was not quite human. It was obvious, in the way she looked. But then again, Lorne had spent enough time with Angel and with demons to know something older than it looked when he saw it.

Lorne offered a polite smile. There was trepidation in it--he did not know this woman, or what she really was, even if he could see she was not just what she seemed.

"Aw, shucks," he said. "Well, I try." He grabbed one of the towels up and put it in the red shopping basket he was holding.

And since he was, in fact, Lorne, all he could do was be pleasant. At least until such time as he lost his temper, or his sleep. "And how're you this afternoon?"

The crone's head tilted slightly as she watched the...what was he? He felt different, but he wasn't the creature she thought he was. Not exactly the ogre or troll she'd been expecting. Instead, she took a few steps forward, closer to him.

"Bored, amused, curious. I had to take a break from banging my husband." She shrugged as if this were something she said everyday. It was possible it was something she might say daily...now.

"How are you this afternoon?" She took a few more steps closer. Her hands rested at her sides as she gave him another look over.

"You'll forgive me, but..." Her hand lifted to motion at her eyes, indicating his own sunglasses. "Would you mind? I would prefer to meet new creatures eye to eye."

That was some refreshing honesty. Lorne had to miss that about L.A. Whatever the City was, it wasn't that forthcoming. Like, ever.

How was he?

Lorne shrugged. He wasn't bad, but before he could really answer the question or make a quip about not having a husband to bang and therfore being probably more bored, she kept talking.

He did not know what she was, so granting her request was not something he was inclined to do. Actually, it sort of made him a little upset to think about doing, which was probably a good indication of the sort of power standing in front of him. He gave a nervous laugh, kind of a twitter.

"Funny thing about that," he said. "If I take these off, the nice normal people here will react. Sometimes it's screaming. Or pointing. Or staring. You'll forgive a rude jerk, but I'm really not in the mood for that right now. I pretty much don't leave home without 'em."

He said it in a chipper way, and did move the glasses so she could see his eyes while he said it. But while Lorne considered the population at large's opinion to not count for very much, he was actually telling the truth. Being pointed at and having people run away really did bring your entire day down.

"That's unfortunate. Screaming, pointing, and staring by idiots shouldn't bother someone as unique as you." It wasn't said in some snippy fashion, and it wasn't overly sweet. The crone just might have meant it. Her lips curved when she saw the eyes, and she gave a slight nod.

"Very unique. The only creatures I've met with similar coloring had low IQ and smelled awful. They also didn't bother wearing much in the way of clothes." Ogres and trolls, a real pain in the ass sometimes. She had liked the wooden army a little more, but they could give a girl splinters if she wasn't careful.

"How is it that I haven't met you before? Have you been here long? I should have known someone like you existed." He had magic, or sort of magic, but it wasn't her kind. If he had been anything like what she was used to, she was certain she'd have recognized that he was around before.

"I'm Red." She didn't offer her hand; she just bowed her head slightly, her weight shifting slightly to look as if she almost curtsied.

She was making him nervous. Lorne did not like that. He was considering the types of beings that had that effect on him when they weren't armed or actively trying to blow Caritas up.

How is it that I haven't met you before?

Well, lady, y'see, I run this little hole in the wall club that protects people from magic. So I'm betting if you were there, you'd be borderline average. That might have something to do with it. Say, our cocktail shrimp is to die for!

"I've been here quite a while," he said. He wasn't going to volunteer to her why she may or may not know him. Because really, he had no idea why she hadn't picked him up on whatever magical radar she had.

I'm Red.

No. That was a lie. Not her name. And you didn't have to be something like Lorne to know that, either. He really wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt, but that was hard to do when all the stray hairs on his arm were fighting not to stand up.

He smiled brightly, though. He was an excellent performer. "And I'm green!" Lorne chuckled. "No. But seriously, I'm Lorne. It's nice to meet you, Red. Whatcha doin' at Target?"

The crone's eyes narrowed as she watched him; she wanted to poke at him, get a reaction, but she suspected that he would run or perhaps grow into some awful creature she simply wasn't in the mood to deal with at the moment. She knew eventually she would have to find him and discover just what made him tick, just not right now.

"As I said before, taking a break from banging my husband. Assuaging my boredom." Her hand lifted to wave all that away, as if it were nothing but a mere inconvenience. The stone in her wedding ring glinted on her right hand, but the hand wave was not to show off the ring. She was simply making a gesture.

"I'll have to return eventually. At least now I have something to talk to him about." Of course, the crone had many things to discuss with the Viking, but this one would certainly be high on her list of sharing.

Oh, good. So she was going to talk to her husband about him.

Lorne didn't know who her husband was. He knew there'd been something in the paper about a wedding, but unless it was the entertainment pages or everyone was disappearing, Lorne didn't pay a ton of attention to the entire paper. He had other things to do. He was trying to get Christian acclimated, patrons were ruining his living space...

... and where was Logan? That was a thing. He needed to call that kid.

"Well, I'm flattered," he said, brightly. He put another towel in his basket. Despite the feeling she gave him in his gut, Lorne decided it was better to just be nice. That was usually his policy anyway, until you pissed him off or hurt one of his friends. "I've never been here before. I'm gonna poke around and check it out. Wanna come with?"

He smiled.

"No." The crone would have rather nudged the green one, see how he opened up or closed down, but for now, she'd be happy knowing he existed. She could find him again. He was...different from the silly human types.

"It was very interesting, Lorne. I'm sure I'll see you again." Her smile was dark for only a moment. "Do have a lovely evening, and hope that none of the villagers come screaming for your head." She gave him a wink; she knew he wasn't the creature created by one particular idiot doctor, but he was wonderfully green and intelligent.

"So long." And with that, she gave a small curtsy and turned on her heel, heading toward the exit.

"Wouldn't be the first time," Lorne responded, with an unreasonably bright smile.

Hey, Pylea was a happenin' place.

He gave her a wave. "Toodles! Enjoy your night."

Something told him that the last part was an unnecessary sentence. Lorne couldn't help but relax a little as 'Red' walked away.
