Backdated: When Billy Met Laura, Parts 3 & 4
Sing-a-Long Blog
The red letters on the clock read 2:17 AM. Something was moving softly in the house, but the hushed sounds had been enough to wake Laura up with her defensive instincts in overdrive. She wasn't sleeping in the oversized orange chair anymore (Billy had cleared out the spare room), or else she would have heard it long before. Stalking silently past the Billy's room and the living room, Laura went straight to the back room. Muffled sounds could be heard through the closed door, and the blue light shining through the slit at the bottom indicated that either the computer or the television were being used.
She opened the door swiftly and soundlessly, but was unprepared for what she found. Billy was sitting in front of his computer, talking to his monitor as though it was a live person.
"So I've been doing research, trying to discover who might be potential obstacles; what super heroes are known to be in The City and who's been here in the past." Billy, dressed in his white lab coat and impressive goggles, was so caught up with his presentation that he had no idea his roommate stood behind him at that very moment. He held up the first picture that looked like a red and blue blur in the sky, "This is Superman. Flies. Impervious to bullets. Strong."
The next card went up, "Batman. No powers, the man uses a lot of gadgetry which I can respect." Billy paused, taking a deep breath, "Of course, I've recently discovered the worst threat of all." Billy pulled up the next picture taken from ATM photo of a man standing in a long brown coat across the street. "That's right. Captain Hammer. In The City. Clearly someone needs to take over and dispose of such a tool."
"Billy?" Laura had no idea what Billy could possibly be doing. She remembered some of the names he mentioned from a previous conversation, but why she was talking about them in the middle of night to a computer was still unclear. Was he sleep walking? No, sleepwalking was improbable, given the special outfit he was wearing and the preparation that had gone into his speech.
"What are you doing?"
"Aaah!" Billy jumped about six inches out of his chair and reached forward quickly to turn off the camera. He turned around to look at Laura sheepishly, tapping the tips of his fingers together which were inside ridiculously oversized gloves. "I, uh...."
Billy cleared his throat.
"I'm a super villain."
The Heist
For someone who didn't smile often, Laura's demeanor had gradually but surely begun to change over the last month thanks to Billy's influence. 'Camouflaged' in a leather jacket and Ray-Ban glasses (Billy's idea, not hers), she couldn't help but crack half-a-smile as she followed him down the street. He had decided to stage a heist that sounded a little dangerous, and Laura told him she would accompany him. To Billy she was there as a hench-woman, but in reality, she was just there to make sure he didn't get hurt.
Staging a heist required more planning than any of the missions Laura had ever been on. And more equipment as well. Weapon X has always sent Laura in without devices or weapons of any sort, but here she was, carrying bags for whatever it was they were about to do. They must have weighed between 10 and 15 pounds each, but Laura bore them as if they weighed no more than a couple.
"So what is the mission?"
Dr. Horrible was reluctant to take her out on such an important heist. He didn't want to have to worry about her. While he was aware The City didn't have the same rules and regulations when it came to heroes and villains, Laura didn't even have her henching permit. She didn't even have a name yet!
He frowned.
"Use the communicator. Keep an eye out. Wish me luck."
Laura blinked twice and nodded at Billy. There was no way she was going to let him sneak into the building alone, but he didn't need to know about that. She had already spotted four different guards making rounds, and it would be more efficient to dispatch them if Billy wasn't looking over his shoulder at her every minute. Plus in her experience, most men did not like to be shown up by sixteen year-old girls, so if she could take care of the opposition without Billy ever finding out, they would both be happier for it.
The job was a simple one. Laura had taken out more men under worse circumstances before, so everything went according to her plan. The four guards and their replacements had all been knocked unconscious and piled into a large supply closet within ten minutes, and no alarm had been sounded. It was only once the door was locked and the handle broken that Laura used the communicator Billy had given her.
"Status update: everything is clear, Doctor."
Dr. Horrible immediately covered his communication device with a gloved hand, forgetting that he'd left it on speaker. "Uh, okay. Great. Just keep a look out..." He wondered inside nervously with a miniature ray gun strapped to his wrist, pointing ahead of him. The intel said the place would be heavily guarded, but the super villain had yet to see anyone.
After the heist, when Billy knew Laura was away from the scene safely and they had room to breathe freely, then he'd be proud of her. Even if she was only the look out, everyone had to get their start somewhere, and nothing made him happier than to know she accepted him for who he was.
After robbing a number of valuables from the warehouse completely unmolested, Horrible marveled at his luck. Hefting duffle bags that were now considerably heavier than they'd been before, he joined Laura out by the van just where he left her and they made their getaway.
"That was almost too easy." Horrible blinked several times.
