Snow Day [Snowed In]
(For Bella, Veronica, Dick, Bruce B, Lee, Edward and Simon)

Making the snowman had been extremely fun, and Jeannie was very pleased to have met a new friend. She genuinely liked people, and the truth was, she was more than a little lonely. While she enjoyed meeting all the people that she had since coming to this place, not one of them had really stayed. There was no one that she saw regularly. While she liked her new master, it was not at all the same as having a human master who was always there. To talk to. To serve. To love.

But when the snow became too bad, it was no longer quite as fun. It became too difficult to hold a conversation. So reluctantly, Jeannie made her good-byes and watched as Liz disappeared into the growing storm.

For a bit, Jeannie wandered through the chilled and changed landscape. Here and there, she ran into people that needed a bit of help dealing with the ever-deepening snow. All of them received aid in some fashion or other. Except for the last man.

Jeannie had been about to help him get into the car he claimed was his when the street light above him began flashing red. It was a clear sign from her master and though it was difficult, she withheld her favor. When, moments later, he smashed in the window of the car and began grabbing things that obviously did not belong to him, Jeannie deposited him in a snow bank instead.

Once again, her master’s wisdom was proven. After that, she allowed the City to guide her movements, following the green lights and walk signs when she could see them through he flurries. It was getting rather difficult to walk, actually, and she hoped her master was leading her somewhere warm. With hot chocolate, perhaps.

It was not long after that she spied a large dark shape in the middle of the whiteness, suggesting that a big building was at hand. But it was not until she was nearly at its doors that Jeannie recognized it for what it was.

“Oh! It is a school!” she exclaimed. She certainly hoped all the students and teachers had been sent home before the worst of the storm had begun. But it was best to be certain, and her master had led her here for a reason, so she hurried inside.

“Hello? Is there anyone here?” Her voice echoed hollowly through empty halls, and Jeannie moved further into the building. It was a relief to be out of the storm, and she would feel terrible if there was a child here that she did not help because she had been in a hurry. She made her way through the maze of halls until she found herself in a very large room, though she could not immediately identify its use. “Hello?”

Funny, if Jeannie was looking for a familiar face, she was about to get it. Well, she would get it eventually.

Simon wasn't ready for the excessive snowfall; in fact, he had settled into a nice constant string of invectives towards the snow and the City. He had seen too many frostbitten toes and fingers. Too many people came in suffering from hypothermia. Too many stupid children who thought making snow angels was a good idea only to realize that the snow bank they were flopping themselves in was feet not inches deep. He was in a grumpy mood, and walking home was not helping matters.

He'd heard that there was a school, a damn school, that might have a few children in need, and needing to get the hell out of the Hospital, he headed in the school's general direction. Simon's attitude of late had taken a drastic sour note; he didn't like being watched as closely as he was. He didn't like being questioned by nurses or, worse, orderlies. It was growing to be enough that he was thinking of going private.

The good doctor glared up at the building before tromping inside, beating the snow off before it could melt into his clothing. At least he had the more appropriate clothing for this weather; the City had given him that much at least.

He started to search for the children or staff in need, but he wasn't finding anything. Had they just left? Well, that was certainly a brilliant thing to do. He kept searching until he found what looked like a communal area - the cafeteria, resembling the one at the Hospital almost. He also found a certain woman who looked slightly familiar.

"Hello?"

"In here," called Lee, waving an arm. She was in normal winter clothes, for once--she couldn't very well be "Miss Lee, gym teacher" running around in a weird red hooded getup.

She should have called in sick today. All she had to do was look outside and know that, but no, that idiot urge to do shit for other people had reared its ugly head and made her sign up as emergency staff all that time ago. So she bundled herself up and made her way to the school in case anybody else was stupid enough to show up.

Which, apparently, people were. Great.

"They said that there were children who needed to be looked after." Simon wasn't exactly happy about being here; he hadn't planned on coming out in the snow. He wasn't planning on being stuck here either.

"I suppose the authorities were smart and sent them home?" He looked around; his hand lifted to rub at the back of his neck before both arms crossed at his chest. He'd brought a few things, mainly medicinal, with him, and none of it was helpful if they did get stuck.

"Didn't see anyone in the classrooms, so I guess we can just head home?"

Jeannie turned when she heard the voice, and she had been about to answer when there was a second voice. A female. Her head swiveled about to locate the owner, and she blinked at the very red hair she saw. This was not a woman she had met before. She would have remembered her.

But the man…

He was speaking again, something about children, and Jeannie was sure it was important, but she could not get past the fact that this was someone she knew! The dark hair, the blue eyes. He was so handsome. And he had rescued her! She would never forget him.

“Dr. Simontam!” It was a cheerful squeal, out of place in the nearly deserted building, but she did not care. She was so happy to see him, no matter the circumstances.

So she did what she would do in any other situation. She nearly threw herself at him, hugging him tightly as she continued to squeal, “I am so happy to see you!”

Surprise, surprise – Bella had wound up in the nurses office. She’d insisted that she not be the shooter person for basketball during gym class, but had they listened? Noooo. Thus, she was hit in the head by a rebound, with a nasty lump forming on her head, and not to mention a splitting headache because of it.

The bright side? She’d got out of gym class at least.

She couldn’t recall how long she’d been in the office, but once she left, the school was like a ghost town. The snow outside was billowing furiously, and the sight of it made shiver inside her coat. Bella hated the cold.

Walking aimlessly through the hallways, she was drawn to the sound of voices, which came from around the cafeteria. At least she wasn’t alone here, she thought.

“Uh, hello?"

"Yeah, no," she told the man--who, judging by the squeal from the strange woman who'd bolted in and hugged him, was named "indiscriminate smush of syllables that might have Simon in it somewhere". "See, people were scared that this might happen--this being all sorts of idiots coming here despite big honking drifts of snow outside--so I'm stuck here to make sure that nobody acts like a gigantic fucking idiot and decides to go wander in it once they're in here. Unless you have some sort of magical means of transportation to get everyone the hell out of here and into, say a designated Red Cross shelter or something like that." Needless to say, Lee wasn't in a very good mood.

She gave a halfhearted wave to the happy woman and called out to the new voice--young from the sound of it. Maybe one of her students? God, she hoped not. "In here. Where it's relatively safe and not-quite-so-relatively warm."

Dick didn't have a good reason to be here, except that the school had looked like his school back in Gotham, and when it had started to snow hard enough to drive him indoors, some instinct said this would be a better option than a snowbank. He heard someone call, and then someone answer, so it was not a few seconds longer before he was following Bella into the cafeteria, getting along rather well on two crutches. Somehow all the shapechanging hadn't torn open the wound in his leg again, and in his downtime he was limping around without them, trying to get back into shape. When he went out, however, he was on crutches.

"Getting worse out there," he told the room at large, in a surprisingly cheerful voice. He wore a knit hat and several layers to keep the cold out. His blue coat collar was turned up, but he had a handsome, friendly face and no problem with being stuck with a bunch of people he didn't know for God knows how long.

It probably came of being grateful he wasn't a walrus. Long story.

Veronica had been out, in this….monstrosity of a storm. It was like the day after tomorrow revisited. She had every intention of getting out of it before all of this really started piling up, but it didn't happen. It was unnatural the way the snow fell, just dumping feet upon feet on the ground, and as a girl from sunny California, Veronica was not used to it. It was ironic that she had happened upon a school, since she hated her own back in Neptune. But it was a good place as any to get out of this wretched weather. She pushed inside and pulled the door shut tightly behind her, shivering.

She'd just wait it out. It couldn't be too long, right? Turning from the door, Veronica noticed that she was not alone. Awkward. But maybe these people needed a place to be sheltered from the storm too. It was an anomaly of a storm out there and it didn't look to be letting up anytime soon.

Isn't this cozy?

"Hey." Veronica said, putting on her best smile. "I'm Veronica."

"Don't mind me," said Dr. Banner as he entered the gym, stomping snow off his feet. "I'm just here to make sure nobody is spiking the punch or dancing too close. Hi folks, I'm Dr. Banner. Science professor at the Institute."

He suspected that the gym might become a gathering place in a storm this bad, and had come to check that people were all right. But now that he was here, it seemed less likely that he'd be able to get home again until the storm was over. He questioned the logic of his trip.

“Oh good,” gushed Jeannie as others joined them. “Now everyone can be safe together! That is so much better than being stuck alone, do you not think so?”

She clapped her hands lightly, pleased that she had so many people to help. The djinn truly loved to be useful. And in a situation such as this, it seemed to her, the best thing for all of them would be to have some heat. The others were not like herself, they were human. And if she, a being of great power and magical ability, was cold, they must be nearly freezing!

Though it was much better in this place than it had been outside. Still, if they had a fireplace, that would be perfect! But where to put it, that was the question. Jeannie moved away from Dr. Simontam, examining the area very carefully. There were a couple of doors, and she could not restrain her curiosity.

The first was a closet, a very large closet, that contained jump ropes, rubber balls, and a very large wheeled canvas cart full of towels. There were a few things that she could not identify, but it seemed as though it was filled with toys for the children who went to school here. Perhaps later they could play with the jump ropes.

The second door, when it was opened, elicited a gasp from the genie. “Oh, it is a kitchen! How wonderful! I am a very good cook,” she announced to no one in particular. Then she blinked in confusion. “Everything is in such large cans. We will need a can opener.”

“Hi, I’m Bella” She continued the round of introductions, shivering insider her coat. She wasn’t at all used to the snow – heck, she wasn’t even used to the rain back in Forks. The long hot summers in Phoenix were tantalizing her mind, making it all the more worse to endure.

She surveyed the company, and decided they were interesting to say the least. Kind of like the snowed in equivalent of Giligan’s Island.

The young man on the crutches nodded hello to those who came after him. "Hi Veronica. Doctor. Bella." He put names with faces, and then put them in his mind, filing them away the way he'd been taught. Details, details.

Dick frowned thoughtfully out of one of the long windows. The snow hissed just beyond the glass surface, and he could feel the temperature start to plunge fast enough that it sank through his jackets and sweatshirt. He had a spare thought of concern for his acquaintances here in the City. Smart enough to get under cover, most of 'em, he thought. Except the damn magic-types. They can just magic themselves some cover. Unless they accidentally drop a house on their own heads. Turning on one crutch easily and navigating through the chairs and tables with admirable grace, Dick followed the older blonde woman toward the kitchen. "That's a good thing. Ovens are good. I'm starting to think this snow might not let up anytime soon. It's getting pretty cold in here."

Seeing Jeannie again had shocked the doctor, well, this doctor, not the other doctor. He winced as he felt as if he were channeling Kaylee and her way of thinking, or maybe it was his sister. It really didn't matter because he didn't appreciate the attitude from the red haired woman, and he didn't care for the fact that there were more people here. Groups of strangers didn't seem to bode well for the doctor; he was better one on one.

"Jeannie!" His mind finally worked. "Don't do anything." Yeah, that seemed like something nice to say, but having been at the receiving end of her abilities, Simon wasn't looking forward to what she could do. He moved toward the kitchen, looking at the others as he did so.

"Please, don't do anything...different." He didn't mimic her blinking, but he hoped for now she'd be good and not try anything magical. "Well, do we have any food?"

He really should have had that cup of soup before leaving for this train wreck of a rescue mission.

Jeannie was about to tell the nice young man on crutches that she could take care of that problem. That it was getting cold. She had a plan for that very thing, in fact. A fireplace would work wonders for all of them.

But she stopped, her mouth half open in preparation to speak, when Dr. Simontam said not to do anything. She frowned slightly, more than a bit confused as to why he would say such a thing. He was a doctor, after all, and a hero. He helped people. Surely he above all others would understand why she felt compelled to give aid.

The djinn closed her mouth, frown lines framing her lips. She could make everything so much better, so much easier, for the humans here. Would he have tried to stop Liz from using her fire if she had been here? It made no sense to her at all. And while he was not her master, there was an automatic compunction to please this man who had saved her from that horrible place. She liked him, and she wanted to do as he asked. She just did not comprehend why he would prevent her from doing all she could to help.

And since he was not her master, she felt perfectly justified in asking very bluntly, “I do not understand, Dr. Simontam. Why not?”

"Because until we know what our situation is exactly, we might want to wait for you to do what you're good at." Simon wasn't sure if he had said that in a way she might understand. He stepped closer and awkwardly set his hand on her shoulder.

"I know you want to help." He hoped that was why she did what she did. "But, why don't we see what is here, food, heating, what works, what doesn't, before you do anything? We might have to save you for our last resort." Well, that certainly seemed like a good thing to say.

"We need to stay warm and see what supplies we have." He looked at the others who had probably thought of this, but sometimes Simon needed to state the obvious. He needed to feel like he was in control of something, even if it was just himself.

His attention returned to Jeannie, and he gave her shoulder a little squeeze. His voice lowered a little. "They might not understand what you can do." He sure as hell didn't. "Don't want to scare anyone."

Bruce couldn't help but overhear part of the conversation. It sounded like someone else here had powers. He tried to nonchalantly move closer to the speakers, but his wet boots squeaked loudly on the hard floor with every step. His presence now apparent, he decided to speak.

"Um, am I right in understanding you have some skills that might help us?" He addressed the woman.

Jeannie considered what Simon said, truly she did. It sounded very much like what her ex-master darling might have said. It was best to know all about the situation before they did anything. Yes, that was very smart. Oh he was handsome and clever!

So clever that he decided right away what they would need! Warmth and supplies. Yes, that would be exactly what they wanted. He was so wonderful, Jeannie could not help herself. When he cautioned her not to let the others see what she could do, so much like Major Nelson used to, she was simply overcome and she flung herself into his arms.

Well, she flung her own arms around his shoulders, at any rate. Hugging him enthusiastically, she squealed softly, “You are brilliant, Dr. Simontam!” To punctuate her joy in his intelligence, she rained a series of smacking, little kisses across his cheeks and lips.

Then, before he could change his mind, as some of her previous masters had been known to do, she very quickly set to work. First things first, the supplies. There was quite a bit of food in the kitchen already, but much of it was in cans. That was probably not very good. Jeannie had once tried some of the “special” food that the astronauts were given, and it was truly aweful.

But she could fix that without anybody knowing that it had been her to do so. A quick nod and a blink changed fill the refrigerator and cabinets with what the djinn considered staples: legs of lamb, roasted whole chickens, standing rib roasts, crocks of hearty soups, several potato dishes, some savory cous cous, and lobster thermadore because it seemed like it would be nice to have; a number of wines of various sorts as well as some large clay jugs of water would be found near the refrigerator.

There, that would be much better. The supplies had been easy. Warmth would be much harder to address in a circumspect manner. But before she could get that far, a man moved over to speak to her. At his question, she turned a bright smile on him and gushed in a whisper, “Oh yes. I have many skills. I am most talented, you see. I think a fireplace would be just lovely, but Dr. Simontam does not wish the others to be upset, so I shall have to be as sneaky as I was with the food.”

Her face lit up as she had a new thought. “Perhaps if there was a distraction, I could make one while they looked the other way! Would that not work, Dr. Simontam?” Her eyes were on his, pleading silently to let her do something to be helpful.

The good doctor didn't have much of a chance in giving a hug back, and the kisses were enough to make the young man blush. He wasn't ready for any of this; he had no idea how he was going to fix it, if he could. He just stood there with his hands out as if he were about to hug back, but didn't. This was confusing; no, this was madness.

Simon looked from the overly eager Jeannie to the professor of what? His brows furrowed at how quickly this was going in the very wrong direction, especially when Jeannie decided to do exactly as he didn't want. Using magic just wasn't right; there was something inherently wrong about fixing problems with just a blink.

"I don't think it will be that easy, Jeannie. And, did you just do something?" He looked around the kitchen, not wanting to see what might have changed.

She smiled brightly, and whispered loudly, “I did what you asked. I made supplies. Good ones, Dr. Simontam. Would you like me to make a fireplace now? Ooo, or perhaps a little potbellied stove! I have always wanted one of those!”

But even as she spoke, she could see the light outside the shutters brightening. Which meant that the cloud cover was moving off. It would probably stop snowing very soon.

Her face turned toward the windows, she murmured, “Perhaps I can build another snowman.”

Simon gave Jeannie a look his sister had given him on the rare occasion she was lucid enough to think he was a boob. There was a slight shake of his head, and he even considered telling her that neither option would work without proper ventilation. But, her attention had been caught by something else, and he looked.

"Well, we might not be stuck here as long as we thought." His hand absently lifted to give Jeannie a soft yet awkward rub/pat on the shoulder. It seemed the proper thing to do at times like these. He wanted to make her feel better, especially since she wouldn't be doing anything magical now.

"Jeannie, do you think you can give the school back the food it had? I think that would be for the best."

Jeannie looked at him in surprise, then stated simply, “But mine is better.”

Which settled that question very firmly in her mind. Really, Dr. Simontam was a very sweet man, but he was not nearly as clever as she had once thought. But then, doctors, in her experience, were not terribly bright anyway. Dr. Bellows had been a bit silly too.

She moved away from the others, closer to the windows. With a surreptitious nod and a little blink, she opened the shutters so she could better see the last of the storm. Perhaps a snow fort rather than a snow man. Ooo! A snowball fight! Maybe the others would enjoy that as well.

Now that it was nearly over, Jeannie was really starting to warm up to the idea of snow. It was something she would keep in mind the next time she was bored. She could always make her own snow, of course.
