Who: Heloise and Jarey
When: Early evening
Where: Elkwood palace halls

Jarey had gone to give his condolences to Kelvin Grimm. He wasn't from his kingdom or even a friend, but Jarey felt empathy for his situation. It was all too easy for him to imagine what that would've been like, and how easily it could have happened to him! One misstep, one dropped blood and there went the fingers, no getting them back. He wasn't surprised that his mother had encouraged him to stay away from the training yards more now than she ever had before because of that. His grandmother didn't agree. Jarey thought that the sun would turn black before his grandmother and mother actually agreed on something. Instead of staying where either of them could find him, Jarey had taken to wandering the halls of the palace when he didn't have something specific to do. He'd spend the morning reading the letters he was sent, helping his grandmother make decisions and then he would slip off to train or to wander out of the sight of the women in his life.

If asked, he would tell them he was thinking. In reality, he was seeing what the other people did in those twilight hours before dinner. He could hear some discussions drifting through doors not entirely closed, or see people slipping off who had the air of those who didn't want to be seen, and all in all, Jarey thought he was seeing things he wouldn't have had he been walking with his mother or grandmother, and definitely not if he'd stayed in his rooms.

Raised voices coming from just ahead caused him to stop. A wicked part of him wanted to stay just where he was to listen and see what was causing such a ruckus. The wicked part of Jarey - which was a very small part - won out as it so rarely did and he stayed where he was stood, head cocked a little to the side as he listened to the argument he definitely wasn't a part of.

Heloise was sure parents fought over how to raise children all the time. It was just strange to hear it. Her mother was gone and what her father wanted for her, her father received. There was no one to argue with him, no one to protest. Thankfully he was an intelligent man, and while she thought he struggled with having a daughter from time to time, Heloise found him to be quite fair.

Her gaze shifted away from the door when Jarey turned his head to look at her, and she saw the spark of recognition that she had seen in Amadeo's eyes the first day they met and she introduced herself. Heloise smiled at his bow and shook her head. "Nor did I, but here we are," she said before laughing. She placed a hand over her mouth quickly to muffle the sound. "I think it's likely to happen often. There are far too many people in this castle not to overhear a conversation every now and then. Even a private one. Lord Bamford, is it?" She was ninety nine percent certain, but Heloise didn't want to make assumptions and call him by the wrong name.

It made it a little better that Heloise, the Princess, was here and eavesdropping right along with him. Should word find his way to his grandmother, a bigger concern than if they found their way to his mother, Jarey was sure that having Heloise present would make her go a little easier on him. Eavesdropping was, after all, quite the rude thing to do.

"I think that is what servants are for," Jarey offered with a bit of a smile. He'd heard people say that those from Mag Mell didn't readily smile and found it silly. His family smiled as much as others, they just didn't feel the need to do it all of the time. Smiles had a purpose as much as frowns and the reasons were sure to be lesser when in a land as hard as Mag Mell was. He'd like to see the lords of Tirna do half so well in Mag Mell as they did there, in the far more fertile lands. "Jarey Bamford, yes, that is correct." He was pleased to be recognized by so many in this place. True, he was recognized at home, but that was different. "And you are Princess Heloise Leavey. The honor is mine." He gave another bow, sure that his grandmother would have applauded could she see him.

"Yes, I suppose servants hear quite a bit, don't they?" Heloise had rarely thought about that. Servants were always around, but they worked hard to stay quiet and unseen. For the most part, they succeeded. Heloise glanced back at the closed door, suddenly worried that perhaps it would open and some Lord or Lady would find she and Jarey in the hall, eavesdropping. Heloise didn't fear getting into trouble, but she wouldn't want it getting back to her father, regardless.

"Would you like to walk with me?" Heloise asked, returning her attention to Jarey. "I cannot promise conversation as interesting as whatever is happening behind closed doors, but I would hate for anyone to catch us eavesdropping."
