Conlan thought on that for a moment before replying honestly. "That would depend on the circumstances. You haven't done any real harm, as far as I know at the moment, and I don't believe you would intentionally. But...if something were to happen that I couldn't ignore, my hand would be forced. I'd do my duty, yes. Not to hurt you, because I don't want that, and not just because it's my job, but for the protection of others. You'd be arrested, but after that I couldn't say what would happen. It would be beyond my authority."
He stopped, then added. "I don't want you to be arrested any more than I want to be the one who has to do it, and I don't want others hurt any more than I imagine you do. If that happens it's not just your burden or your mess anymore, and I can't just overlook or forget it." He sighed, hoping that didn't come out wrong somehow, but he really didn't know how else to spell it out. "I'd rather take the opportunity to help while I can, and learning all of this now was good. It might take a few days for me to ask questions. The crowds are still settling in and it's going to be busy for the guard, and especially for me. I'll get there, though, and if anything strange starts happening with what you can do after this please tell me. If...there are places or circumstances where...what happened might be more inclined to happen again, you might want to ask someone else to take care of them for now. Maybe try sending someone else to market, if you can. Tell them you had a problem with a vendor, you wouldn't even have to lie. I'll give an account if you need it."
