That is true. What's the point of being a scientist if you can't try new things and make new discoveries? I did actually get to see how it worked, since I'm fictional. There's three episodes of the show I'm on that used the Einstein-Rosen Bridge device, the one where history changed, the one where it ended up bringing stuff from the 1940s into the present, and then one more where they got it working and tried to fix the timeline discontinuity. So I have a general idea of what it's supposed to do and how it does it even if I never worked on it.
