There is a difference between forgiveness and retribution. I'm not asking you, or anyone else to forgive Ward for what he did, but I do think it's important to recognize that he was just a cog in very corrupt machine.
Alexander Pierce might have been HYDRA, he might have been the person who marked me a fugitive, but he was also the person that Nick Fury trusted, and answered to. I saw footage, Zola's rundown of the past eighty years, and all the political assassinations, backdoor deals and tactics used by SHIELD, carrying out HYDRA's work. They're so close together it's impossible, I think, to really tell where one stops and the other starts.
Not to mention the fact that Project Insight, as I knew it, was just two hairs away from being exactly what HYDRA made it. Eliminating threats before they happen, whether it's taking innocent lives, keeping tabs on gifted individuals, or revoking the freedom of someone for personal reasons -- these things aren't what make up a just society, and they'll do us no good here.
I know -- I absolutely know -- that there were good people who operated within SHIELD. I know you're one of them, so is Coulson, so are plenty of the other people who do what to do whatever they can to make the world a safer, better place. But doing terrible things for better reasons or better goals doesn't entirely eliminate how terrible the thing is.
