Animals tend to be pretty good at telling people what they need. When I was a child, my tribe had several banthas, which are kind of like large cows/horses. Useful for nomads like us. Anyway, the herd had ways of making any distress known. When you're used to an animal's mood, you can get a feeling for what it's changing. If she's unhappy or in pain, you'll know. Little things, like her ears twitching in a different way, or if she's seeming agitated or stamping her hooves.
