I don't understand your Hallow'een.

In France this time of year. The start of next month is when we honour our dead. Visit their graves but we of course have none to visit in this

How here has it become a celebration of the macabre?

It's from Celtic origins if I remember correctly and supposed to tie into Samhain. Originally you dressed up in costumes to fool the dead that can wander around at that point so they don't try to take you to the Underworld with them or whatever.

Now it's basically all about candy.

How did they get from death to candy?

Do I want to know?

That didn't really happen until the 1950s and it's not big in all countries. Some don't even do the whole trick-or-treat craziness that's popular at least stateside. Pretty sure it was a candy corporation idea.

I'm told there'll be a party. Though those are common enough here!

I am pretty sure we manage to party for just about everything here.

It's a bastardized version of Pagan rites, stripped of any real meaning beyond superficial entertainment, which was then commercialized so that candy and party supply companies can make more money. Anything to make a buck, these days.

Money, I suppose I should not be surprised by this.

So much is about money

I do not really understand the appeal either, even if people from school are talking about it. There are a lot of different celebrations for the dead in different cultures, but this does not seem to fall under that.

It seems less a celebration and more a reason to gorge oneself and dress ridiculously.

I do not understand it

Basically. It doesn't make much sense to me. Between what are considered 'costumes' and saying its fun to be someone else. And then being told to dress as

I really don't understand the appeal. But I suppose we should try to fit in with some of the culture.

Strange as it is

So long as fitting in with some of the culture is not going to one of the parties that people at school are throwing, I can be okay with that.

Definitely strange, then again, anything unfamiliar can be seen as strange.

Well yes of course. I suppose it will take all of us out of our time a while to adjust.

But that's what the lessons at the Inn are for I hope. So others do not have to deal with all of that.

Most likely. But its also true for people in their own time. I don't think that ever really changes no matter what your situation.

I'm sure they will.

Back home, it's pretty similar to here. There's lots of traditions that stem back to the original Pagan origins. Like the dressing up in costume is so spirits won't recognize you. And you carve a pumpkin with a face shape to scare them off. Mostly it's become just a time to be silly and do fun things and eat sweets. That being said, there's a party and you should come. And bring that boy of yours.

And there should always be parties! We're having an Apocalypse, we deserve a good time.

Oh, Eponine. Really?

Really what?

Yep. If we can't have fun and relax, then when the time comes to truly fight this war, we'll all be too burnt out to care.

How many other boys appear very prominently in your life!

I suppose you're right at that!

Rose that's...we're not...I

[Rose]

He and I aren't...

Enjolras wouldn't think of me like...

Boys like him don't end up with girls like me. You know that.

Besides there's Marius. Even if he was never mine, can I just forget all that

When you're here long enough, you start to get it. It can't be all fighting demons and Seal craziness and psychotic villains all the time. We'd all go mad.

[Eponine]

First of all, I never said it had to be a date. Just come as friends, but you both should come.

Secondly, boys like him absolutely do like girls like you. Trust me, love. There was a time when I was nothing but a girl working in a shop, but one man decided I was special enough to see the universe with him. You have a big heart, a kind personality, and you're absolutely beautiful. Don't you ever sell yourself short, not for him, not for Marius, not for any man.

And thirdly, you'll always remember Marius. A part of you may always love him. But that doesn't mean you can't let someone else in your heart if it's what you want.

That's what he says too.

And I do. Like him I mean. With Marius, he'd pass me and my heart would stop, I'd feel like I could see him but he looked through me but I always wanted so badly for him to see me as anything beyond his little gutter friend. And 'Parnasse...we were never healthy. He wanted me, I didn't want him but sometimes when Marius would say something about other girls I'd just...give in. Until he started to want more.

Enjolras. He knows me, he is a truer friend than I've had in a long time and we can sit and talk for hours just because, and its easy. I could listen to him talk and it makes me feel like I can conquer the world.

But I don't know if he'd ever feel that for me. He couldn't, not because I'm not good enough. I just don't know what he'd make of it if I ever said it.

Besides he cares for Belle, and I won't stand in the way again. Not again.

Oh, sweetheart. The sad part is that you believe that. That he couldn't feel that for you. You're more special than you know and the fact that he makes you feel that way says a lot.

Listen. Invite him to the party. He could stand to be more social anyway. It doesn't have to be a date, just ask him to join you. See how things go. Judge how you feel then.

And don't you go worrying about anyone else. Worry about you. You deserve something good.

It does? I've only ever truly felt love for one man and he did not return it. I just, This cannot be another Marius. And Belle, she's sweet and kind and knows books and things I never will.

I've asked him. Rose I don't know if this was a good idea.

Tell me something, Eponine. As long as you knew Marius, did you feel you were special to him? That the world moved for him because of you? And Enjolras, what about him? Books and sweetness are fine, love, but not if it isn't for him. Putting your heart on the line is hard, I know that. God knows, I know that But you won't know until it's out there.

Course it was. People do go to events together just as friends, Eponine, it doesn't have to mean anything if neither of you wants it to.

No.

I was a friend, a good friend even. But not special like Cosette was. He never looked at me the way he did her.

Enjolras. He talks and I could listen for hours. And I feel so safe with him. I don't know if that means I could love him. I don't know if it works like that. I don't know if he works like that.

What if I do want it to? I don't know Rose. I don't know what I feel.
