He felt rather guilty about the food left on his plate, automatically wondering whom he could give any leftovers from their meal to-- and then, realizing that there was nobody depending on him to provide for them. His father would have been upset with him to not consider Marian in that way, and there was a part of him that wanted to be doing so; however, not only would she be likely to get angry with him if she were to discover that he thought it, but she also was doing a quite good job of it herself.
