WHO: The Fabulous Lydia Martin & The Stunning Caroline Forbes
WHAT: Shopping
WHERE: Mall
WHEN: Closer to when Lydia Arrived!
RATING/STATUS: Low | Complete
The good news about this place was that Allison was alive, that was by far the most important thing that Lydia could think about. The idea that her best friend was alive and for all intensive purposes okay was extremely important to Lydia. Sure, she was pretty shallow on the outside, but she really did love Allison and her death had really shaken Lydia to the core, here though Lydia had fallen back into some of her perhaps not best habits, the somehow she didn’t allow herself to think about that, imagine that.
So, the other good news about this place, was that a very bubbly blond had offered to arrange a shopping trip, which was horribly needed and extremely important to her well being, hello, looking good was essential, especially given this whole welcome to another supernatural world that wasn’t the one you were from thing. Lydia had decided to look into the classes that were available because she was curious and she wouldn’t say it to everyone, but she did like learning.
“So, tell me Caroline, what is the best shop here?” Lydia didn’t actually have that much money, but she’d figured out a way to get some of the gift cards, and she did have some cash in her pocket when she’d showed up here, which would get her not far, but it’d get her somewhere.
~~~
This was Caroline’s third version of Lydia. She’d gotten along well with the first one, hadn’t talked as much to the last one, and was hoping to get along with this one as well. It was weird to re-meet people, to know those little facts about them that they kept hidden from the rest of the world. Like the fact that she knew Lydia was wicked smart while also being fabulously dressed. Little things that she wasn’t all that sure she let on about or not. Though technically the whole television show brought a lot of that to light but Caroline tried to make it a point not to watch shows that her friends were on.
“Unfortunately our options are kind of limited in Lawrence. The big stores are like Kohls. Or Ross. But there are some smaller boutiques that have better things than you’ll ever find there.” Which was where she was bringing Lydia today. “It’s not exactly a Marc Jacobs or a Prada but it’ll at least get you settled until I can organize a trip back to like Milan. We did that last year. It was a lot of fun.”
Caroline waved her hand toward where the small boutique was located inside of the mall. “If this doesn’t work we can always try Kansas City but its really not that much of a step up.”
~~~
The whole being from a TV show was weird enough, and she actually probably would watch some of the shows that people were on, and she was pretty sure she'd end up wanting to see her own show but that was a problem for another day. She would much rather get clothing first.
"Kohl's and Ross? No Macy's? At least Macy's has acceptable things." Lydia said, although now she was starting to wonder if she thought that or was that because her TV Show had a deal with Macy's and how those choices from a world like this would make a difference on the lives of people and the influence between them. Hmm. She'd have to do some reading on that.
"Oh, I am really sorry I missed that, that would be an amazing trip! Heck, I'd even take New York at this point, but Milan would be better." She shrugged as they headed towards the small boutique. "Kansas… A place I never actually wanted to go and yet here we all are." Lydia mentioned. "So, what kind of jobs do people find around here? Obviously I have to finish school, but I'm getting the impression I'm going to have to actually work to maintain a lifestyle I might actually be interested in.
~~~
“No Macy’s. Maybe Kansas City has one but I’m not all that sure.” But she couldn’t quite remember. It had been a while since Caroline had done any shopping in that city. Now she mostly went to take in the jazz scene when she was in need of actually feeding and not simply drinking from blood bags. Klaus and she had a few regulars there that they would frequent.
She considered the jobs that people had among the displaced, trying to figure out what would be doable considering Lydia’s age. “It kind of depends on what it is that you wanna do. A lot of people work for other displaced people. Though some just have regular jobs around town.” Not really ones that Lydia could do considering most of them owned bars or clubs. Though there was always the bakery. Or Starks.
“Lots of people end up making becoming ridiculously wealthy be their first wish.” It seemed like nine times out of ten that was what ended up happening. “But you kinda missed those wishes. The good thing though is that if you’re at one of the apartments you don’t really have to worry about any bills aside from like food, clothes and things like that.”
“Do you like kids? Cause Rose usually needs people to work at her Center in the evenings.”
~~~
"Seriously? No Macy's? How do these people survive!" Lydia said giving Caroline a horrified look and probably a rather disapproving one of the people here and the place, not of Caroline, she actually liked Caroline, she just didn't like this whole being in the middle of no where with nothing and bad shops on top of it. Seriously, they needed help.
Had Lydia actually known Caroline better she probably would have answered with something along the lines of something where I actually get to not want to poke my eyes out from boredom, but alas, she didn't know her all that way. "Something interesting obviously!" Ideally something where she could use her massive intelligence, but again she was falling back into old habits of hiding some of that, which was stupid, but don't tell her that.
"Hmm, shame I missed those, maybe they'll come around again." Lydia said although she was sort of doubtful of that, given that it appeared it recently had happened and it wouldn't happen again until the holiday season again, a year from now. Lovely. "Yes, but see, food, clothing, supplies are essential to day to day life, funny how that works." Lydia said shrugging.
"Kids?" She thought about it, how did she feel about kids? They could be really annoying, unruly and sometimes cute. "I guess it would depend on their ages and how well behaved they are." Actually, if Caroline had mentioned Starks that would be the one where she might be able to do something. "I did talk to someone, he looked like Robert Downey Jr. But I'm pretty sure he was a version of Stark who said when he gets a lab open he'd take me on, something about building a engine. I don't know if that'll pay yet, but it should, engines are dirty."
~~~
“They’re all over eleven I think.” Or well, almost all were. She knew that Henry had gotten special permission to be involved when he was ten and so did Henrik because they were displaced kids. “But I’m sure Stark would pay you for helping with anything like that. There’s another Stark here too. And a company that’s already built. I think Jemma has a lab so you might want to talk to her about doing stuff there if you’re interested. There’s also a medbay where you could probably work and get paid too. That’s run by Martha.”
Caroline paused, trying to think of who else did anything else like that in the community but she was coming up blank. “If you ask on the network I’m sure someone will be able to tell you any more options that are out there.”
The clothes weren’t exactly anything that would be found at Macy’s but they were a huge step up from what could be found at the local Ross and Kohls. Hopefully they would tide Lydia over until a bigger trip could be organized. “So are you still doing high school or are you just going to move onto college? Because you can actually do either. There are people here who will get all of the papers you need together and there’s a fund available to pay for college as well.”
Caroline had skipped. She’d come in during the summer only to find out that she’d missed out on graduation and prom and a million other senior year festivities, but the idea of repeating a whole year without her friends hadn’t been at all appealing at the time. Moving onto college had been much more agreeable.
~~~
"Manageable." Lydia said with an air of basically dismissing the thought, it wasn't that she wouldn't consider it, but a Stark involvement would be so much more fun and actually worth her time. She actually might be challenged by something academic, that would be something. Lydia was challenged all the time by the supernatural world, but the other stuff, the reading the learning, that was all super easy. "Jemma… She's the one that posted about penguins right, and ice cream?" Lydia made a mental note that perhaps she would reach out to her after shopping of course. "Hmm… Medbay, I'm not sure that would be a good fit." Lydia said as she thought of medical and people dying and a banshee around where people might be dying… she had enough of that and really? She'd find the dead bodies eventually without even meaning to or wanting to.
"So, is that how must people figure things out? Just blindly openly ask on this network thing?" Lydia asked, it sounded probably a little judgmental but she was actually really curious. She wanted to know how things worked her, and she wanted to make sure she understood more about all of this. It seemed Caroline was pretty dialed into this whole world thing.
"Hmm…" Lydia said thinking about it. Skipping high school? Or well the rest of it, sure why not? A moment later she thought about Allison who was probably still going to be in high school and if she wanted to stay behind with Allison or go ahead and go to college. "I'll have to think about it, but it's not like high school is really ever that challenging." Lydia said knowing full well she maintained at 5.0 without even really trying that hard.
Pulling out a shirt she quickly put it back. "Okay. So, definitely not that." The shirt she'd pulled out was bright purple with little snow flakes with letters in them, it was pretty horrible.
~~
“I think there’s a lot of asking anyone you know that’s been around here for a while but openly asking on the network seems to get people the answers that they need. And it gets easier as you get to know more people.” Filtering seemed to happen more often as people got to know others, as they developed friendships. It took time but it seemed to happen for most the longer they stuck around Lawrence.
Caroline scrunched her nose at the shirt Lydia had pulled out. That definitely wasn’t going to work. “Why don’t we start with jeans and other types of bottoms.” She motioned toward that section, hopeful that there would be something that would work for at least a little while there. Obviously she was going to need to try and set up a real shopping trip sooner rather than later. Probably not Milan again as that was out of most people’s price range. Maybe they could do New York though or even LA. Just needed to figure out who the teleporters were now and see if one of them would mind getting them all to and from the city.
She pulled out a bootcut pair of jeans that she thought looked about Lydia’s size as well as a few skirts that she thought worked with Lydia’s color pallete. “We really need to get you a coat too because its bound to get colder around here.” Hopefully not as cold as last year’s winter though.
~~~
"Usually does. Or doesn't depending on the people you get to know." Lydia said shrugging, which was also true, sometimes some people probably not the best to get to know, like Peter from her world, but that was another problem and from what she knew it was just herself and Allison from their world right now which she was totally okay with, totally. Although Scott and Stiles would be nice to have around. It surprised her how much she missed both of them. As Scott had mentioned, they were part of his pack so to speak, even if she was a Banshee and not a wolf. They were their own pack and she missed them, a lot.
"That might be a lot safer." Lydia said giving a disgusted look at the shirt before following Caroline to the safe options. While Lydia wasn't huge on jeans, Kansas was colder than where she was from and if they were stylish she could make them work. "Oh, that's a cute skirt." She said gravitating to one of the skirts that she'd picked out that was a good shade of blue for her. "I could make that work, but I'll have to get tights given the weather here." She shrugged.
"Yes, a coat, and a scarf, probably should pick one out for Allison too." Lydia added. "Scarf, not coat, she has a coat I'm pretty sure. She's been here longer than I have." Although it didn't seem like it had really been that long.
~~~~
“I’m sure we can find all of that here or somewhere else.” Caroline wasn’t too sure what all Allison had acquired in her time before Lydia’s arrival. At least a place to stay but she hadn’t talked to the other girl as much. Which had her feeling a bit horrible. She’d been friends with another Allison and having the girl leave twice and come back without memories all over again was hard to deal with. Even harder for Allison but at least the others from her world had been around then. At least Scott had been around then.
“Is she doing okay?” Because coming back from the dead was always weird. Caroline had done it a few times in Lawrence, which was why she’d made the first wish to be like an Original vampire and stop regular old stakes from being able to kill her. It was different than a snapped neck, than being shot and knowing she’d wake up from it all again after a few hours. It was cold, dark, and she still woke up gasping sometimes from nightmares of the picture frame stabbing her in the heart.
“I haven’t talked to her all that much here. She had Scott around when she first arrived.” It was infinitely easier to gravitate toward people from home than making new friends. Especially upon arrival.
~~~
"Good." Lydia said shrugging. Allison liked scarfs, she sure wore them enough, or occasionally enough for her to know that Allison would like a scarf, and Lydia could make sure she picked on that would go with Allison skin tone and help her with her fashion sense because lets face it sometimes Allison had questionable fashion choices.
"She's okay, I mean okay as she can be, she's not dead, which is a good thing…" Lydia said shrugging. While it might have sounded a little cold, there was nothing cold about how Lydia felt about it, Allison being alive was amazing, scary but amazing.
"And she lost him again?" Lydia said remembering vividly that Allison had told Scott she loved him as she was dying, that she would always love him. Isaac was cute, but he wasn't Scott. Scott and Allison… Lydia was pretty sure they'd be together forever, until Allison died and Kira came along. Lydia liked Kira, but she missed Allison all the time.
~~~
Caroline didn’t really find Lydia’s statement cold. She had her own experience with dead friends not being dead anymore because they were in Lawrence. It was a hard concept to wrap one’s head around and the relief that they were there was huge, but the worry that they could be taken again at any moment was also consuming if one let it be. And the Seal had a nasty habit of reminding everyone how easily it could send people away.
“Yeah, she did. He might show up again though.” Hopefully. Though probably not with his memories and while that would suck for Caroline, at least Scott’s presence might be a help to Lydia and Allison. They were the ones who would need him more.
“Do you know what color she’d like? I’m not too sure if she’s really one for loud, vibrant ones or if we should do something more neutral for her.” Maybe one of each type would be good. One to help accent outfits and another that could be used every day if needed.
~~~
"I hope so. That would be really good for her." Lydia said, there was no sarcasm in her voice just honest truth and hope that Allison would get her Scott back. Selfishly Lydia wanted Scott there too. Despite having not really known or paid attention to him or Stiles for years, now they were two of her closest friends and she frankly missed them, a lot. They were the people she called when she was in trouble when there was danger. It was weird not having them there. "So, you knew Scott too?" Lydia asked getting the expression that Caroline knew everyone.
"Well, she wears a brown leather jacket a lot, and a good…" She said looking around. "A good pale rose colored scarf would bring some color to her face, and brighten up her pale skin." Lydia said thinking out loud. "Nothing too flashy, she wears a lot of neutral colors and I love her, but she can be really boring in her wardrobe options. … Unless of course it's a case for her bow and arrows in which case she's like bad ass chick."
Lydia paused at that thought. "Hey. Where do we get things like you know, weapons here. Not for me, I don't do that kind of things, but you know, I keep hearing about the dangers… it would seem wise to have some protection, at least for Allison." There was no way Lydia would handle Allison dying again.
~~~
“I knew Scott and Stiles. Scott because I first warned him off becoming a hybrid like I do with a lot of the werewolves.” Though that wasn’t really a problem any longer since there was no human doppelganger blood and she trusted Klaus to not go around making hybrids for the hell of it even if there were. Plus he’d given the one kid a choice, allowed him to think of the ramifications of it and not forced it on him. She considered that to be progress.
“And when Stiles was here he started having episodes because of a door in his head. I went in and closed it for him, kept whatever was trying to get in to stay out.” Caroline hadn’t been sure it would even be successful because she’d never really used her dream manipulating abilities before but it seemed to have worked. He hadn’t gone all crazy like he apparently would back home.
She headed toward the winterwear section as Lydia talked, pulling out a rose colored scarf and some grey and black accessories that might work for Allison. “Your best bet for weapons is to talk to Bobby Singer or the Winchesters. They’ll hook you up with all that you need.”
~~~
"A what? A hybrid?" Lydia said not really knowing enough about Caroline's world at that moment to understand the implications of a hybrid. Lydia knew there was a lot she needed to learn but something called a hybrid didn't sound very good, it also didn't sound like something Scott would do, would he? Scott the true alpha? No.
"Oh…" Lydia said nodding. "Nogitsune. Nasty, nasty trickster. Yeah, we could have used you at home if you really managed to close the door, because that thing, not pretty." She said as she shivered slightly knowing that's what lead to Allison's death but she wasn't really able to say that right now because that was… no.
Nodding she made a mental note that they'd need to figure that out. "Good. I'll add that to my list of people to talk to." She said smiling. "Oh, this is nice." She said taking the scarf and looking at the other grey and black things saying yes to a couple and no to a couple of others. "It's so weird just starting over."
~~~
“I vaguely remember that feeling. I was here a few times before too.” She had just been in Lawrence so long now that being there was normal for her. “It definitely takes getting used to everything and eventually you develop relationships with others here too.” Which was a good and not so good thing. Good because friends were healthy and helped make Lawrence bearable. But not so good because they could be taken away at any point in time. And that sucked.
“You just have to make it all your own.” Which could be weird when people knew who you were and your story was on TV. Caroline was thankful every day that hers wasn’t. It was weird enough having people from her world show up with new memories and experiences she had never gone through and hoped to not go through.
~~~
Lydia made a mental note that she’d have to figure out all this hybrid stuff herself. She didn’t allow herself to focus on it too much because really, that would be a waste of time. She needed to learn, a lot. That at least was easy.
“Luckily making friends isn’t Zsigmondy's theorem, although even if it was I’m sure I’d manage.” Lydia said smiling, although in truth Zsigmondy's theorem wasn’t even the most complicated thing that she could think of at that moment it just happened to be the one that came up.
“So. Coats right? For me, this one or this one.” She said pulling out two pea coats one army green the other classic black.
~~~
Caroline arched a brow at the mention of the theorem. At least Lydia wasn’t trying to hide her intelligence around her. She studied the coats for a moment. “I think that I like the green one more but you really can’t go wrong with classic black. It’s also nice to have more than one coat.” Of course Lydia didn’t really have all that much money. No one did when they first showed up.
Caroline had a lot of it, or access to a lot of it, thanks to Klaus and Elijah. Most of the work she did was strictly in the form of volunteer work so she didn’t really make much. There was always compulsion as well but she preferred using her debit card. “If you don’t feel funny about it or anything I can buy one of them for you. See it as a ‘thanks for shopping with me’ thing.”
For not being too weirded out that she sort of already knew her.
~~~
Lydia let out a loud. “Hmmmm….” As she looked at them. If she had her way she’d have both of them, but money was sort of an issue here and she hadn’t been here for the whole make a wish thing, had she, she probably would have wished for something else, but being wealthy would have been a possibility given that it was practical and something that Lydia could very well work with. Besides, clothing and things were extremely useful, and not to mention fun, fashion was fun.
“Normally, I’d say that might seem weird, but given that I am not totally here with a lot of money, I would say that is really generous and I’ll accept.” Lydia said making a mental note that she’d need to thank Caroline especially given the help, but that could wait, beggars couldn’t be choosers and luckily for her she was getting the best of both worlds in that case.
~~~~
Caroline grinned, thankful that Lydia wasn’t seeing it as being too weird for her to buy one of the items. She knew what it was like to show up with the clothes on your back and be dealt some giftcards to stores that just did not fit one’s taste. But she could give back now and so wasn’t that supposed to be the beauty of Lawrence, all of that camaraderie and willingness to work together or whatever was the spiel.
“Okay, perfect. Then let’s keep looking and I’m sure we’ll find you at least a few suitable wardrobe items until we can schedule a trip to at least New York.” Hopefully sooner rather than later. And if they went shopping there then she could probably round up the usual crew who went so Lydia could meet more people and maybe that would help with getting acclimated to Lawrence.
~~~~
It was unlikely that Lydia would totally admit how thankful she was for Caroline's help and generosity, but she was really thankful for it. It was really nice to be able to get a few things and to feel like maybe things were going to be okay here. She really liked that aspect of it.
"Now, you're speaking my language!" Lydia said grinning as she turned to look into more of the racks finding a few things that were acceptable. Yes, getting here with just what you had on your back and getting gift cards wasn't easy, but it was a lot better with people like Caroline around.
