Peter & Ward; Post-hunt musings and such
Sunday, September 21, 2014; A bar in Minnesota
TBD; In progress

Peter may have technically been too young to be drinking, but that didn't stop him from ducking into the bar with Ward anyway.

The ghoul that the pair had hunted down had been tricky, but in the end Peter and Ward pulled through. It was sort of in the job description. He had noticed the cold demeanor in his co-worker and fellow hunter, but Peter pushed it aside. There were plenty of things being said about the man on the boards, some behind filters, others decidedly not. But so far, Peter had no issues with him, personally. He didn't agree with what he'd done to Loki, but that was a situation he would not touch with a ten foot pole. Too many opinions flying around and no one needed that kind of thing.

Peter had taken the hunt only in part due to the "needed to be done" aspect of it all. Mostly, he'd just wanted to avoid thinking about the fact that one of the new arrivals looked identical to his dead girlfriend, save the fact her hair was red instead of blonde. Facetwins were usually a non-issue for him, he'd even had one for awhile once and he didn't really mind it. But this was different. This was Gwen. Or, rather, it distinctly wasn't, and he really wasn't sure what was worse. So, he decided to avoid the thoughts, throw himself entirely into this hunt, and it had been fine.

They were close enough to Lawrence that, even though it was just after five, the two decided they had some time for a beer before heading back. Peter may have technically been too young to be drinking, but that didn't stop him from ducking into the bar with Ward and having a beer anyway. "To a successfully completed hunt," he offered, raising his beer in Ward's general direction before taking a sip.

"SHIELD was never what it was designed to be. But it doesn't matter, there's so little of it left and what they have, they don't have the numbers. They don't have enough to do it even if I do tell them anything, and when I got here, I hadn't decided yet if that's how it would go."

Heroes. It had happened again. Stark, Cap and now Parker, all of them definite save the world at their own expense types and he'd managed to befriend them. Garrett would have hated it, everything about it. This whole city was making him redefine who he was.

"Why? I mean you could do anything with power like that and you use it to save people and be the big hero? What made you chose that?"

"That's pretty unfortunate. I don't know a lot about it, but from what I understand, the foundational idea wasn't a bad one. But I guess it's not easy to keep things...uncorrupted." All a person had to do to see the proof of that was look at any group in any normal walk of life. High school kids who hooked themselves into the wrong crow, corrupted government officials, any number of areas and you could see just how easily a good idea could be burned to the ground in an instant.

Why. It was such a common, and loaded question. Why did he do what he did? Wasn't it just the obvious, right thing to do? "It's not about being a hero, that...wasn't really in the plans, like, ever. It was mostly just a side effect. But...why?" He shrugged a bit, "it's the right thing to do. Helping people, it's...fundamentally a good thing. Generally." Not that he could help everyone, solve every problem, save every life. And that was something that weighed on him, probably far more than it should for anyone, but especially someone no older than he was.

The founding idea of SHIELD. Protection. He'd heard it over and over and he hated it. Because it was a lie. Because every bit of it, it didn't matter. Because they'd protect you just fine, as long as you were somebody that they thought was worthy of it. "If you want to think of it like that, there were good people in SHIELD sure, but they were always gonna lose out to HYDRA, end of the day, they're willing to go that extra step." he said simply, he wasn't going to go into it any deeper than that.

Because uncorrupted, good, heroic. It wasn't a concept he thought about. Or wanted to.

"So you do it cause its good. Because you have that power and you think its what needs to happen. You know not everyone thinks like that, makes that leap. Some people go the other way. I'm curious why you think that is? Why'd you go one way and the people you probably fight, the other?"

"I guess." Peter didn't say anything else on the matter, though. He could tell it wasn't really something Ward wanted to get into and he wasn't going to press about it. What good would that do?

"Yeah, basically," His partner seemed to be asking all the hard questions today. Not that Peter minded, he was pretty sure Ward was just trying to understand things from the other perspective that he maybe didn't fully understand, but he'd never really been asked to put into words why he did, what he did. "And no, not everyone goes that way. But I mean, I guess, maybe that's because of who they are, you know, at their core. Or things they were put through that changed them so much that they'd go the other way. I mean, I've always kind of been that guy, you know, that helps people where I could. It's just now, I have a better means of being able to do that, so...I do."
