WHO: Rumpelstiltskin and Belle
WHAT: The big, mean pirate upset her, so the Dark One has whisked his love away for some romance.
WHEN: Right now!
WHERE: The south of France, a small town near the Riviera.
RATING: TBD, but rated for epic Rumbelle cuteness.
STATUS: In Progress

The words from the pirate hadn't bothered him in the slightest. Rumple knew the man was petty and consumed by his hatred of him, and refused to care about it, was even faintly amused by it if he was completely honest. It was Belle being upset that got to him though. His love had dealt with too much pain in her life and his every instinct was to protect her from suffering any more. His instinctive reaction was almost to find the pirate and slowly gut him for causing her hurt, and before she had appeared in his life he probably would have done something along those lines. But she had changed him, had made him see that the darkness that was inside him didn't have to utterly define who he was. He could be the Dark One and still capable of love, a fact he was determined to show to her.

She had asked for some time just the two of them, and facilitating such things when one was extremely powerful in many forms of magic was really quite easy. The way he spun gold meant that money was never something he needed to worry about, and teleportation was really quite simple. It was a quick trip to the bank to get some Euros and a brief phonecall to ensure a place to stay and off they went, appearing in a cottage he had rented for them. The owner had been more than happy to not question the short notice when he had offered her several times her asking price for a few days of holiday.

The town was small, picturesque, streets lined with fresh bakeries and local produce, the bright waters of the French Riviera within view. The sunshine was warm, though the air fresh thanks to the nearby seas.

He hoped it would serve as a romantic distraction from the upsetting issues of Lawrence, Kansas.

And, as promised, there had been a book shop, with the rich scent of leather and paper coming from volumes about local history dating back centuries. Much of it in French, of course, but a couple of English editions, and even a few in Latin.

"Happy, my love?" Rumple smiled, though there was a faint hint of nerves in his voice as he waited for her answer and he handed her a warm croissant.

Seeing her smile, seeing the way she seemed truly happy and at ease with the world, that made everything worth it. Rumple would bring her the stars and the moon to get that look from her. Fortunately, it seemed he didn't need to go to that much of an extreme, he simply needed to find romantic places in France and antique books.

He returned the kiss just as gently, the sweetness of her taking his breath away as she always did. And he smiled as he tucked a lock of her hair behind her ear. How the Dark One managed to find a love like this, he would never know, but be eternally grateful for.

"That sounds like the perfect evening to me, I have bought some bottles of wine from the vineyard nearby, it is supposed to taste exquisite."

Of course he knew what she was doing, and he loved her just a little bit more for it. The truth was his leg was starting to ache, just a touch, and although he could strengthen it with magic, to be able to relax would be so much better.

"It is also what we deserve," he added. "As much as I do enjoy the family atmosphere of Lawrence, some time to ourselves is important as well. And things like this, traveling the world, enjoying the sights. It's something we've never had the chance to do before." Something he did partially blame himself for. If he hadn't sent her away, if he had accepted her love even at the possible cost of his magic. And of course in Storybrooke, things just kept on happening, all the time, one drama after another. And while Lawrence was hardly free of such things, at least some of it was dramatics he could avoid.

Belle was aware he knew, of course he was. But he didn't say anything and she didn't push. It was between them and no more would be said of their staying in for the evening. But Belle did have an idea of her perfect evening. And being in rural France was definitely helping with the whole 'what they deserved' thing. He was right though, they did deserve some happy times. They wouldn't last, they never did, but it was nice to have an uninterrupted night with the man she loved.

"Its weird, I still keep expecting Snow and Charming to rush in with some emergency or other you need to fix. Or accuse you of something awful. Or, y'know, both at once." Belle hadn't been naive, even in Storybrooke, but ultimately they'd never endeared themselves to her the way Emma had managed. It wasn't a bad thing so much, there was just something she'd not connected with in the way she had with someone like Ruby.

"Do you prefer it here? I mean with Bae, and Henry and everyone here. Do you prefer it now to Storybrooke. I mean papa isn't here, but then I'm not sure how I feel about any of that yet."

She reached across for one of the bottles, pouring a glass each for themselves before shaking her head.

"No matter, just come and sit with me. And tell me what we're going to do tomorrow. If we decide to leave the house that is."

Ah, the Charmings. Ever the demanding couple, never quite able to sort out their own lives. It was both amusing and infuriating really. "Normally both at once," he agreed wryly. He was so often the first accused of doing something nefarious, and it was only really true some of the time. And yet the Charmings often lacked any sort of imagination when it came to such things, being quite the naive pair.

"Yes, I prefer it here." The question was an easy one to answer, and he offered it without hesitation. "Here we are together, my son is here, my grandson. While, yes, I wish Bae could be with the woman he loves, I admit it is pleasant to see Emma so content, and the former Sheriff deserves the chance to be happy after everything Regina put him through." Of course, if the man did anything to truly upset his son, Rumple would show him no mercy, but until then, the Huntsman would be left alone.

He took the glass of wine with a small smile. "There is a small museum nearby, with art from the local area dating back a few centuries I believe. If that would interest you?"

They always assumed. Something went wrong, something bad happened, they'd blame him, almost without fail. And it had started to annoy her back home. Oh she'd like Henry to have his other grandparents, for Emma to have her parents. But ultimately. It was a good deal calmer without the Charmings and their very own brand of dramatics. "Usually yes" she agreed. "The interrupting was getting tiresome though."

He was content here though which is all that she'd wanted for him. He had been through so very much, they both had. It was only fair that he now enjoy life. And that he could do it with her by his side so much the better.

"I love you, you know that. Everything you are, and were, and will be. And I see the parts of you that few others do. The part happy for Emma and Grahem, the part wanting no more than to finally have the family you deserved for so long. You fight against so much in your life, but with me, with Bae, you never have to. We're here. No matter what happens."

That said, she took her own glass of wine.

"It would interest me, but what about you, is there anything you want to see or do here"

Rumple had to admit, a part of him was glad the Charmings were not around. Oh, if given the choice, he'd swap Regina for them, but really they were more drama than they were worth, and really did seem to think the realms all revolved around them. "One would think those two didn't even understand the concept of private time," he agreed with a faint smirk. That was one benefit of this place. Thus far at least, no one had bothered him with either blame or trying to make him solve everything. His magic was quite possibly more powerful than all the others combined, but he had no interest in being used for the smaller details, like teleporting others around or fixing social events. He much preferred to be constructive and work with the likes of Elsa and Davina.

"I love you too, and this? All of this, it is everything I ever wanted, more than I could have dreamed." A soft smile appeared on his face, one that was so rarely seen outside Belle's presence. "I am happy for Emma and the Sheriff, and I have faith that Bae will find a love again when the time is right." Rumple sipped on the wine for a moment.

"I am blessed, that you and my son are so incredibly stubborn, and able to forgive a foolish man his mistakes." And his mistakes had indeed been so many over the centuries.

"I wish to see everything. This world is as new to me as it is to you, even with my traveling between realms."

This really was a side to him that the world didn't see. Joking, laughing, sitting with her drinking wine and planning what to do with the rest of their holiday here. They could stay as long as they wanted and be back in Lawrence in the blink of an eye if needed. But she really had needed this break. No one demanding he help them or explain himself for some imagined sin.

She laughed at the stubborn comment. "Well we are. And sometimes we team up our stubborn just so you really don't have a way to get around us. Out of the two we worked out I probably have an edge on stubborn purely because I can do what Bae calls 'The Look'. I should be worried its specified really."

He was right though, about all of it. Bae would find happiness again, and they would continue to be a family. It was everything either of them could have hoped for. Rumple wanted to see everything with her, this whole world perhaps.

"Then we'll see everything. Its not like we don't have time. We can go as and when we decide, we can bring Henry sometimes, we can just be happy, properly happy for the first time in, well probably ever."

It was perfect. It was all perfect and she wouldn't change it for the world.

"Oh, you do have a Look," Rumple had to smirk as he sat back, relaxing into the seat as he enjoyed the wine. "I tend to be the recipient of that Look, normally when you're wanting me to do something like give away things for free or be all charitable with gold or magic." Really, when she gave him that Look, he really could not say no to her. The legend might be that the Dark One was controlled by the dagger, but this one could be controlled with a Look from his True Love.

"That is the benefit of magic, we can travel as we please, as long as the price of gold remains stable, we have all the finances we could ever need, and we can see the world, travel with Bae, bring Henry, Emma as well if he wants, with the family." Not Regina though. He tolerated her presence, but if that woman wanted to move around, she could use her own magic to do it. He had no interest in helping her.

"I like it, the chance for us to be happy. After everything, I think its deserved." By her and Bae at least, and luckily for him, they included him in that.

Belle was unsure about this whole Look thing. It was possible sometimes she wanted him to do charitable things but that was alright. That was because he chose to listen to her. That was entirely different. Nothing to do with a Look. Of course if there was a Look then it was really his own fault for following it.

"Well, maybe the Look is sometimes needed!" she told him amused. "You'd be all unchecked without the Look and we couldn't have that."

The benefit of magic did do a lot for them, she knew that. But she knew what it cost him too. And so a part of her was always just a little but worried for him when it came to its use. But he did deserve to be happy. He'd done some terrible things, she knew that, she would never deny that. But he had changed, he had done so for her and for his son, for the family that he'd learned came with that. That was what was important.

"The Look may actually be sometimes needed," Rumple conceded with a small smirk. Because that was the truth, he had been the Dark One for so so long, done what he wanted when he wanted because there had been no one to actually stop him. Oh, people had tried, used magic, strategies. None of them had worked. It took Belle, and her faith in him and her love to tell him when he was about to go too far. And he needed that, needed her to keep him grounded and not lost to the magic again.

"After all, these sorts of checks and balances are very important, there is no one else who could give those Looks like you."

There was Bae, perhaps, but so much had happened between father and son. And yes, there was Henry, but he forgave so much. Maybe too much, between himself and Regina. It was Belle who mattered. And the rest of Lawrence would probably never appreciate how much the little librarian did for them all.

Belle wasn't sure about all that. She didn't control him, she never had done. Nor did she want to. She wanted only for the love of her life to be the man she knew he was capable of being. To make the important choices and be the better man. And he had done, so often. Oh there were mistakes, twisted words. Buut she accepted him. For all he was.

Just on occasion she pointed him in the right direction.

"I'm really not sure The Look needs to be so dramatically talked about. Truth be told, you don't need it, not really. You know what's in your heart and what you are capable of. The good you can do. You don't need me for that."

That said she was glad he had her for it even if he didn't need her.
