Who: Tony and Martha
Where: Some little French restaurant
What: Dinner!
When: ...dinner time
He'd come a long way in being able to go out, and actually spend time in public places, surrounded by people and not completely losing it and wanting to get the hell out. Sure, every now and then he still felt like he wanted to scream, or maybe even hide under a table like a coward, but he felt like he was doing better. There was just some things he had to do now, as a matter of course. Like taking a table not far from the entrance to the restaurant. And taking the chair that faced the door. And Martha, who he knew he'd never be able to properly thank, she just accepted it. She didn't comment, she didn't push. She didn't tell him she wanted that table in the middle of the room with the nicer lighting, closer to the bar. The one he normally would have picked. Because she understood.
And she loved him. She'd told him that. When he'd first gotten back. She'd told him and blown his mind and made him feel like he never had before in his life. And now, he knew. He knew he loved her too and he wanted to tell her. She deserved to hear it. She deserved more than him, so much more. But she was also a strong enough woman that he knew she wasn't just staying with him out of pity (which he'd considered for a while, admittedly). If she didn't love him, if she wasn't happy, he was confident she'd do something about it. And god, with everything she had done for him, he knew how lucky he was. And he knew now just how much he loved her in return. Rose had said she couldn't keep something like that to herself for long, and whilst he didn't think she'd go blabbing, he also didn't think she'd be okay with him not telling her best friend. Or cheating and telling her via text, or something.
As the waiter came over to take their drinks, he flicked through the menu, not really taking in any of the words. If only he could get rid of his damn nerves.
