He really hated the way she still made him feel. He raised an eyebrow feigning disbelief as she accused him of having an ulterior motive. Of course he had an ulterior motive, he almost always had one. He very rarely told anyone his real reasons for anything. "If I did, I would tell you now would I."

He noticed her studying him and frowned. He hadn't seen her since he'd gotten here, not as an adult anyway. She seemed happier here, contented almost. Relaxed in a way he'd never seen her. Elijah obviously made her happy, and he couldn't help but resent it. Resent that she'd found happiness.

The softness in her voice almost broke him. It was a tone he'd so rarely heard from her, and was far to reminiscent of Elena. The mocking smile slipped. Damn her, for knowing him too well.
