Who: Jack Harkness and OPEN
What: Jack needs something to do. This whole sitting around thing is for the birds.
When: Late night brooding.
Where: Around and about.
Rating: TBA

There were a multitude of things that Jack missed moving from Cardiff to the ass-end of the United States and one of those things were buildings. At least, buildings of a considerable height like he was used to. Sure there were tall buildings but nothing that gave the same effect.

So what -- Jack Harkness was bored. Take a man who was used to working thirty-hour days and toss him in a place where there was nothing? Christ, he was bored out of his skull. He was half tempted to cause trouble only if it meant he could investigate himself. But really, how much fun could that be?

It was late enough in the evening and under normal circumstances, Jack would have expected something to be going on. However, he had a feeling that he'd be lucky if someone kicked up a disturbance in a bar. Then again... bar fight could be interesting. Spurs, horses, the whole deal.

Okay, so he was equating Kansas with back-woods western towns of old. So sue him.

Hands shoved into the pockets of his greatcoat, Jack trudged toward the first open bar he could find. Maybe, for once, he'd even order something with an alcoholic content.

Star wasn't bored so much as lonely. Sure, she had made friends here, but it only served to drive home the fact that none of them were what she was used to.

There were good things to be said about the place (and the time) fresh produce being one of them, lack of capital-M Machines being another. Most days she could just let it go and be here, but some days, the bad days, she started to think maybe it was all a trick and she was in some SkyNet thinktank somewhere.

Those were the days that she went and decided to kill a few braincells, just in case. Today was one of those days, she didn't have a favorite bar, they were all pretty much the same as far as she was concerned, loud, easy to get lost in. Just at that particular moment she was perched at the far end of the bar proper, working on her second beer and not-really watching the front window, or even outside the front window, her focus somewhere far distant.

The first thing Jack noticed when he walked into the bar was the din of noise. Not unwelcome, mind, but it was simply that -- a wall of noise. The places he tended to frequent weren't usually this uprorious, but it would do in a pinch. Besides, Jack was beginning to feel like 'usual' wasn't a good word around here.

Usual lead to lonliness and Jack was anything but a loner. More like the life of the party when he could. God, when had things changed? Oh, right. When Rose Tyler had accidentally made him immortal. Good to know when one's life went to pot but those were thoughts for another day, weren't they?

Moving toward the back of the bar, it seemed to be a bit quieter and a bit easier to think. Then again, maybe Jack shouldn't be thinking right about now. "Wa--" Jack stopped himself before ordering his old standby. "Jack and coke," he said.

Star realized that her gaze had followed the man as he crossed the room, she was fairly certain she'd seen him around, but not totally sure. She shook her head, rattling herself out of staring before giving him a small wave of greeting, though her nose wrinkled just slightly at his choice of drink.

Mostly it was on account of carbonation was a thing of the past when she was from, and the bubbles always made her sneeze at first.

The nose wrinkle and the wave seemed to come almost simultaneously and Jack took that as his opening to say hello. Or at least to strike up a conversation.

"'lo," he said, moving right from that and into that 'conversation' thing. The drink came soon after and Jack took the first sip of his drink and grimaced. God, it had been a while since he'd had a proper drink. "So tell me what part of the drink you don't like. I didn't think most people had a problem with Jack Daniels. Tequila? I can see. But not Jack."

She laughed, shaking her head. The laugh was really almost a pantomime of an actual laugh, utterly silent aside from a single huff of breath. She flipped to a fresh page on the notepad in front of her, tugging her pen out from where it was tucked up under the edge of her cap, writing: Cola. Don't have soda back home.

Her handwriting was a tidy block print, easy to read, and she wrote quickly, almost as fast as most people wrote shorthand. Once she knew he'd seen that part, she added: I'm Star. tapping the pen to the punched-tin sheriff's badge on her hat.
