The Doctor had been tinkering in one of he labs for hours. Not that he noticed what time it was. It was more that making machines and fixing Martha's equipment had kept him occupied. Well, had kept his hands occupied. His mind still kept wandering. He was too worried about his companions. He'd never seen Jack so worried about someone. He knew that Jack cared about people. He'd just never seen this side of him before.
And then, there was Rose. Always so strong, always wanting to stand with him, no matter how much he tried to protect her. And she was so broken. It broke both of his hearts every time he thought of what she'd been through. He wanted more than anything to help her, to try and fix it. But, it couldn't be fixed.
He yawned, putting down the bit of machinery he'd been tinkering with. He still wasn't sure what it was going to do. And suspected he never would if he didn't get any sleep tonight.
As he got up to head towards his bedroom, he heard a slight change in the humming of the TARDIS. She still sounded like she was in a good mood, but she was trying to tell him something. But, he couldn't work out what.
He quickly made his way to the control room to see what was going on, and stopped in the doorway, as he saw Rose crying. He wanted more than anything to just put his arms around her, to comfort her. But, he didn't want to startle her.
Instead, he paused in the doorway, and spoke gently.
