Everything was very big. From the bed that could take up at least four of him to the thing he was told was where he could bathe. He didn’t understand why he could do that in a nearby creek at first, but once he was shown how to use the hot and cold setting, Henrik decided that was one good improvement. He wasn’t sure about everything else though. He didn’t like his too big bed that he slept in alone when he’d been so used to their house and snuggling up to his mom or one of his siblings when it got too cold or the night got to be too quiet.

He really didn’t like the weird rectangular object that flashed colors and was really loud when he bumped into some other rectangular object on the table. There were so many rooms and so many things that he didn’t have a frame of reference for yet. Some he liked, some he didn’t understand what their use was, and some he didn’t like even one little bit.

All of it was overwhelming and no one would tell him about Rebekah or mother and father and he didn’t like being kept in the dark. He wasn’t some little kid. He’d gone hunting with father. He’d helped catch fish. He did all the other things he’d needed to do in order to prove he was becoming a man but he didn’t feel like one at all.

He didn’t want to be in the large house any more, didn’t care how cold it was outside. He went to the backyard and climbed up into one of the trees, staring out at the nature that was all around them and wondering when everything would start to make sense again.

Later maybe he'd go and hang out with the horses. Even if they were in a weird building some times at least those animals hadn't changed too much since he'd been born.

There were so many things going on lately, that Kol hadn't had the time to really sit down and think it all through. The battle had happened and, on the surface, they'd won. Lucifer and Michael had been locked away like they'd been trying to do for so long. Oh, there'd been losses on all sides, some returned to them, some didn't. And then there were those that had been dragged into the Cage along with the two archangels. Like Rebekah. Between securing his place in Hell and researching ideas from ancient texts on ways to fix this, Crowley had been largely too busy to provide much of a distraction. Kol was ready and waiting for a word for anything he may need his help with. Mostly just for the sake of having something to do.

And then there was the bigger news. Henrik was here. In Lawrence. He was here and alive, if injured, and Kol still didn't fully believe it. He knew the Seal had been known to bring people who had died here, alive and well, he had even been one of them, and still he continued to think it wasn't real, that maybe it was just a dream that would be ripped from him when he woke up. There were so many things that needed to be discussed with the youngest Mikaelson. Ruining his view of their parents, explaining what they'd done to the rest of his siblings because of his death, telling him about what they were, about Nik's hidden side... The mere idea of it all was enough to make Kol want to turn heel and run.

But he didn't. He didn't run because as much as he wanted to, that part of him was vastly overshadowed by the need to see him, to talk to him, to prove to himself that Henrik really was here. There were so many modern things around the house and Kol had tried helping him understand some of it, but he knew how overwhelming it was and kept it to a minimum.

Now, though, with Crowley's plan in place and ready to be executed tomorrow night, Kol found himself full of nervous energy. unable to stay still and he had spent a large part of the day away from the house. Henrik was easy to keep track of, the only live person in a house full of vampires, and Kol followed the sound of the younger boy's heartbeat to a tree in the backyard. "Hey," he grinned up at his baby brother, "what're you doing out here?" he asked curiously.

Henrik peered down at Kol, wondering how he hadn't heard his older brother coming. He was usually pretty good about listening to other's footsteps. Maybe the change in everything was throwing him off some.

"I don't like it here," he replied, though in Old Norse, but Kol would be understand him all too well. "Everything is very different." He looked back out at the house, unable to help frowning. "I miss mother." He couldn't bring himself to say he missed their father because he didn't. It was rather nice to not hear the constant yelling, the ordering around, the threats. Couldn't their mother show up and not their father?

"And Bekah." He wondered where his sister was. No one would talk to him about her. He didn't like it. He liked the animals though. They could stay.

Slipping back into the use of the old language had been easy, despite the lack of use of it in centuries. "I know, it's very different," he agreed, climbing up the tree to sit on a set of branches across from Henrik. "but you'll get used to it, I think. And I bet it won't even take as long as you think." he smiled slightly at the younger boy.

Kol's face fell slightly at the mention of the two star women in Henrik's life back home, back so many years ago for the vampire. "I know you miss them, but you're not alone, brother." he assured him.

"Why is it so different?" Was it because they were in a different land? He missed all of the nature that used to surround them. He missed the familiarity of the trees, the mountains, brooks, and lakes he knew so well. He missed the Falls. He liked the animals his siblings had but he did not understand why they stayed inside so much.

"I know. I have all of you. And the other girls." He wasn't quite sure what to make of them yet, too shy to really be around them but Henrik supposed he would get used to their presence with time. The one who looked like Tatia but wasn't confused him. "I want to be able to talk to everyone. To thank Allison for helping me."

"The magic that brought you here? It also brought you through time. The year now is two-thousand fourteen. You're...roughly a thousand years in the future, little brother." He wasn't entirely sure that much about the seal and all it's doings had been explained to him, but Kol decided either way, he'd keep it simple as possible and only expand if Henrik had further questions.

"Caroline is actually pretty brilliant, you'll love her, I know it. And Katherine..." There was a slight hesitation as he decided exactly how to phrase it. He didn't want to entirely shape the boy's opinion of her, even if he would be watching the bint like a hawk any time she was around the youngest Mikaelson. "Elijah loves her a lot." was the only thing he could manage to think of. He smiled a bit at that and nodded, "We'll work on it. Me and you and the others. You'll learn their language soon."

"Did it bring you through time too?" Had they simply been there longer and been able to adapt quicker? But they knew the language really well. And he didn't quite understand their voices sometimes. The accents threw him off a bit. And everyone just seemed so sad. Not outright, but there was an underlying sadness to everyone that he didn't understand.

Henrik nodded about the comments about the two girls, making note of Kol's hesitation as well as the fact that he didn't say something nice about Katherine. Only the other girl. He'd need to figure out why that was. Not the Kol had great taste in people sometimes. "Really? I think that would help me like it here more."

Kol bit the inside of his cheek at that question. He wasn't entirely sure how to answer it without opening the gate to the conversation he had been so steadily wanting to avoid for the time being. "Not quite as much time as it's brought you." was the most honest, least revealing way he could think to answer it.

He nodded, "Really. It'll take some time, English is sort of a complicated language, but you'll catch on quick, I've no doubt." he assured the younger boy, reaching over to ruffle his hair a bit. There was just something so surreal about all of this, he just couldn't quite make himself believe it was really happening. Henrik was really here and alive.

Kol's answer didn't make much sense to Henrik but everything seemed to be confusing him at the moment so he let that slide. He crinkled his nose at the hair ruffle, squirming further away on the branch. He wasn't a kid! He might have been younger than them but he was capable of doing lots of things. Hair ruffles were for children.

"Why is it complicated?" It sounded a bit difficult when he heard the others speaking it. Which he didn't like all that much because he couldn't understand them and it wasn't fun not to understand what was happening around him.

Kol couldn't hold back the chuckle that followed the younger boy's backing away. It was such a simple thing, but something he had missed so much.

"There are a lot of words that have more than one use or meaning, or words that sound very similar, but mean very different things." he explained. It had been a very long time ago now, but Kol could still remember initially trying to learn other languages, English especially had been hard.

Henrik scrunched his nose at the idea of it. Why would words have more than one meaning? Or sound similar but mean very different things? That hardly made any sense to him. Why would anyone create a language like that? He also didn’t understand how his brothers were so fluent in it. To be as good with the language as they were had to mean they’d been speaking it for years, didn’t it? He felt as though there was more going on than he was being told but he didn’t know how to bring that up.

He just knew that he didn’t like feeling as though he was being kept in the dark.

“Can you help me tell Allison thank you?”

Maybe if he could at least learn that much it would help some. He really wanted to be able to thank her. It felt wrong that he hadn’t been able to do that. Maybe he could make her a rabbit fur pouch. Did girls still use those?

"It's ridiculous, isn't it? Words being so confusing that way. But you'll get it, I know you will," he assured him again, smiling gently at the younger boy.

"Yeah, I can do that." Kol nodded. Something told him that they wouldn't be able to keep their little family secrets from the youngest Mikaelson for very long, but for now, he would work with the boy on learning a new language and worry about the skeletons in their collective family closet another day.
