It had been a trying time and even Belle's famed optimism was being tested. Oh it was still there, she'd sat in the living room for over an hour just holding the chipped cup that was so precious to her and wishing to whatever would listen that it would bring her love back to her. Christmas would be hard, she knew that too, the mistletoe she was so fond of, a stark reminder of what she was missing in this world that had become another home to her. She supposed she was nothing if not adaptable now. But gods she missed him, And of course Rumple  would know what to do, he'd know how to help Emma, how to rescue Graham. And she'd be able to keep him level. Keep the Dark Magic from taking him over completely. She knew how Emma was reacting because she'd seen it so many times. Magic fed on darker things, hate, revenge, anger. But she was not going to fall. Belle wouldn't let her.

She ran up to her room replacing the cup in its pride of place in her room. "I will see you again." she said softly. A momentary pause in her cheery exterior. And how better to regain that than with a new book to read  She'd be safe, she had her amulet, she had magical protections. And the library  was only a few blocks away.

Slipping out the front door, long coat wrapped around her against the chill in the air. Belle made her way to her favourite place in the city. The librarian knew her by now, had actually compared her to....well...herself. Or her Disney self anyway, for her love of books and ability to read the same one time and time again without getting bored. She probably lost at least an hour in there, browsing, reading a few pages of this and that, trying to find something that took her fancy. As ever it was an adventure book, high seas, this time and involving pirates. Perhaps it was unfair of her, she tried not to judge, but she really did find she distrusted them. Understandably given her experiances with them.

Still, it wasn't the fault of the author that she instinctively thought of that man, and his hook and his lies.

She'd give the book a try.

Belle did what she needed to do to borrow said book and began the walk home. Slower than her walk there, She did look up when she came to roads but she'd walked into someone already. And confused a cat. And veered altogether too close to a postbox.

She finally gave up and slipped into a cafe ordering tea. She'd just finish this chapter...

It was entirely likely it would result in injury. Belle was sort of prone to it. "Oh undoubtedly it will. It might be one of those things I'm told are worth it though!" Belle replied, still entirely pleased with herself and her newly borrowed book. Even if she had run into a wall. It was clearly worth it. Lauren meanwhile didn't seem to share her love of books but seemed friendly all the same.

"And yes, frequantly. Or crash into things or fall off things, I'm really not very graceful." she admitted sheepishly. "What brings you out here then, other than tea and watching people crash into entirely inconveniantly placed tables."

Belle looked up as her tea arrived and finally set the book aside. It would be rude to read while talking to Lauren even if she could multitask, and even if chapter 2 was paragraphs away from completion!.

"S'pose I wouldn't exactly call injuring myself a good thing, but to each their own, right?" Lauren found the other girl amusing, if nothing else.

"Just wanted to get out, really. Not much of a homebody," she admitted with a shrug. And it was true. Much as the sun hurt her eyes, she preferred being out to cooped up inside. Plus, being out like this gave her mini-tests of her control that she had been working on with Hal. Being around people, groups of them, and being just fine? It gave her a sense of confidence she hadn't felt in awhile. "What about you? Doing anything aside from running into inanimate objects today?"

Well she could hardly fault that. The girl wanted to be out in the world and who was Belle to fault that when she too had simply needed a distraction. A break. As much as she loved her housemates and she truly did, it sometimes brought back to her that she was missing a part of herself. Without Rumple here, there were nights when she just missed him, moments when she could almost hear him giving her advice, or making some sarcastic comment or other about the Charmings.

"Oh nothing much." she said in answer to Lauren's question. "I needed to clear my head a little which, well for me, involves filling it with far off places and adventures. And then tea. I do love this place, just watching life go by, people doing what they do every day, little routines and habits. I sometimes just sit and watch them. Is that weird?"

She sipped at her tea, the warm liquid refreshing her as it always seemed to have a knack for doing.

Lauren shrugged a bit at Belle's question, "I don't think it's weird." sipping at her own drink. "People watching is fun sometimes. And you can kind of see a piece of who people are when you watch them in a place like this, you know?"

Of course, Lauren had other reasons to people watch sometimes, but she hardly thought that was a first-time meeting sort of conversation.
