Oh he heard her coming. And he could have done a lot of things. Left the scene, compelled her, snapped her neck before she could get too close but this woman had found him here. Sought him out since she was talking to him about his family. If nothing else it was brave, he'd give her that. And she hadn't approached right away, he'd had time to hide the tears, return himself to as close to normal as he expected to get today. He didn't say anything for a few moments, just turned to look at her, dark hair, pretty of course, and not human. Nothing he could put a name to at this point but not human. He'd have been curious normally, but now, he wasn't sure he cared. She knew nothing of his family anyway.
"Oh yes they do. I'm more than aware of that, but they're fools, all of them. Trying to manage me are they? Is that why you're here, the Gilbert boy, others perhaps, got threatening, talking about ways to put me down and my family are saying I'm their problem and they will deal with it because only they can. Am I close?"
The walls were back up of course. Sarcasm, bitterness. Barely restrained anger. But the fact that he was still here and they weren't fighting was definitely more surprising. He'd been paying attention of course. To what he could see, Rebekah threatening to sell her soul for Stefan. Give up everything. But she'd never do it, just like the cure, he was something she thought she wanted, something to fight for. She was an idiot. Overly emotional, the girl that loved too easily.
He'd tried, god help him he'd tried.
"If you're here to beg for Stefan's cure, sweetheart, you're wasting your time."
