Ginger & James Kirk
A date! Dinner + a walk. Because you can't talk in a movie theater!
Monday, 6pm, July 29, 2013; outside the complex, a restaurant, around town (all the places everrrr!)
TBD probably low/In progress

For the first time in all these months in Lawrence, she had a date. An actual date.

Ginger had been having fun with whatever it was that was happening between she and Kirk. She'd dished deteails with Andrea and talked shop with Amy, and basically the same conclusion had been met both times: She didn't really care where it went, as long as it was fun while it lasted. However, after answering his post, she wondered if Amy's "more than just a pretty face" comment might have not been so far off track.

Ginger hadn't let the whole idea fully set in when she made her own post, basically gushing to her friends about tonight's events. No, she hadn't really thought about it until she was getting dressed for the night. For the first time in all these months in Lawrence, she had a date. An actual date. She hadn't really thought about it, but now that she stopped to think, she hadn't actually been with anyone since Peter. Things had been so messy when she showed up, her sort-of boyfriend of 2 years all moved on and with someone else, the mess that came with her realization that maybe she had thought more about their relationship, however volatile, than she had previously realized. Things had smoothed out since then, but until now, there had simply been too many things going on and she hadn't even had one date in all her nine months in Lawrence. No wonder she was bordering on giddy tonight as she headed down to the lobby.

They had decided to meet outside the complex and walk to the restaurant. She only hoped she hadn't kept him waiting too long.

"There were like eight of us, parents included." she explained. "My parents were really strict and wanted me to have this life that went just so... but I sort of had other plans. Ran off the the states when I was nineteen." She shruged. She'd been following her dreams.

"Being the center of attention." It sounded like a joke, but it was also true. "I wanted to be actress. And that's why I left, you know, go find my way into Hollywood. Couldn't very well do that in Columbia, could I? So I went to L.A. all grand dreams and great hopes. Sort of fell flat though." She wrinkled her nose. "Never had more than a few walk ons."

"I think my mother wanted me to stop rebelling so much, settle down and give her grandkids," he said. "I don't think she wanted me involved in Starfleet, but I needed to get the hell out of where I was. So we have something in common," he added with a grin.

"It isn't bad to want to be the center of attention. I was always doing that growing up and I know I still kind of have that desire." Then he stepped a little closer. "If it makes a difference I think you'll be the center of attention tonight. You certainly have my undivided attention."

"Probably! Isn't that what all mothers want once we're grown?" She laughed and shook her head. "So, after L.A. was a bust, I was in Vegas, on vacation. It was my birthday. That's where I met Peter Vincent, you might not've met him yet, he's been sort of quiet lately. Anyway, we met and I blew him off because I thought he was just a pervy thirty-something drunk. Which, I mean, admittedly, was sort of true, but anyway, we ended up hitting it off and I stayed with him and end result? A brilliant show in Vegas, my acting, his magic, it was amazing."

"Well, I could certainly stand to be the center of your attention, Captain." She said, grinning up at him.

"I think I would have liked to see your show. I think stuff like that is pretty cool. But I never got the chance to go to Vegas. When I wasn't in space I was in San Francisco. That's my home base. Kansas is taking some getting used to."

He chuckled slightly. "Considering this is the first date I've been on since I was seventeen I can guarantee I will be paying attention just to you. I don't generally spend more than one evening with the same woman, but you're...different. I think the fact you started flirting first intrigued me, and then...I don't know. I like spending time with you."

"It was called Fright Night, which I suppose is a bit ironic, as that's also the title of the film we're from, but anyway..." She smiled as he made comment about Kansas taking some adjusting. "Oh, I know, right? It's a huge adjustment. I went from Vegas to Kansas, almost a culture shock, isn't it?"

"Oh, really? And, how long ago was that? I'm twenty-three, by the way. I don't think that ever came up before. Twenty-four in September." She grinned at the compliment, "Well, I couldn't have asked for a better man's attention to grab."

"Yeah. I miss being near the bay a lot. I used to go down near the water a lot when I needed to clear my head. I did a lot of that after I came back to life. Long story short I died of radiation poisoning saving my ship. I got brought back thanks to an experiment Bones ran on someone's blood."

He grinned. "I'm twenty-seven. There's times I feel a lot older, though. I've been through a lot over the last few years." His grin faltered slightly as he thought about everything he'd lost, but after a moment he pushed it to the back of his mind and his smile brightened. "At least I have stunningly gorgeous good company tonight to keep my mind off of things."

"The Seal is what brought me back," she said, offering that in return for his sharing of his own experience with being brought back to life. They were different, but similar enough and Ginger kind of guessed that resurrection was the kind of thing that took the same sort of toll on a person, no matter the means. "We should take a trip sometime." she smiled slightly.

She noticed the way his face fell, for that small moment, and she could tell that he'd been through a lot, but she wouldn't push for it. "Can't deny that," she grinned. Mostly it was a joke of being vein, but Ginger did tend to think rather highly of hersef sometimes.

"We should," he said with a nod. "I'm not sure how much of San Francisco is the same from what I know, so it would probably be better to go to Vegas." He paused. "Though San Francisco could be interesting if you don't mind me getting us lost."

He looked around for a moment. "Well, the directions I got should put the restaurant on this block," he said. "It's supposed to be a small Italian place."

"Well, being all futuristic, you may have a point. But a lot of the places around are different, even if you're from a similar world. Similar enough, but...you never know, I suppose." she shrugged slightly. "And isn't getting lost half the fun?" she grinned.

"Ooh, Italian." she perked up a bit, helping him keep an eye out for the place as they walked. "Is that it?" she asked, pointing out a restaurant a little way down the street from them.

"Then let's do it. Let's take a trip there," he said with a grin. "I think it would be very interesting getting lost with you."

He looked where she pointed, then nodded. "Yeah, I think that's the place." They made their way over and he let go of her arm to open the door. "Ladies first."

"I have the money, and a car, all we have to do is pick when." she grinned. "I kind of like the idea of getting lost with you." she said, a grin to match his own crossing her lips.

"Such a gentleman," she said as he opened he door for her, smiling nd stepping inside. The place wasn't terribly busy, so they were seated and given their menus fairly quickly. "You know, for someone who hasn't been on a proper date in awhile, you're pretty good at it."

"I'd like to line up a steady job first. Get some money of my own as well. I might be a bouncer over at the Roadhouse, so we'll see how that goes."

He chuckled slightly. "I cheated. I remembered some of the movies my mom liked from this era and watched a few. Or at least the date parts. Plus, I did have female friends. Uhura and Carol would try and tell me how to have a proper date."

"Fair," she nodded slightly. She could understand wanting your own money, although here in Lawrence, she didn't have to worry about it as much thanks to that bauble wish she'd gotten at Christmas. "I could see you as a bouncer," she said with a nod of approval after a moment's thought about it.

"Good friends." she said with a slight smirk. "They, and the movies, clearly taught you well!"

He thought about it for a moment. "I mean, if you really want to go sooner we can. I would like to go back to San Francisco. I really miss it. If I get the job maybe I can wait a week to start, if you can leave soon."

He was going to reply but the waiter came to take their drink orders. He didn't know much about wine so he looked to Ginger. "What do you want to drink?"

"I'm not picky," she shrugged, "I have all the time in the world. And I have managers I can trust to keep Purgatory running smoothly if I decide to take a trip with a handsome man." She grinned.

Taking his cue that he wasn't entirely sure what to order, she gave the waiter the order for the wine before turning her attention back to him again. "Anyway." she smiled gently.

"As soon as I talk to Jo we can make some more concrete plans," he said with a grin. "I think we could have a pretty good time."

He set down the menu, having decided on what he wanted fairly quickly. "I definitely like the idea of getting to know you better. Tell me more about what it was like growing up?"

Ginger nodded, "Sounds like a good plan to me." she said with a grin of her own in kind to his. "Oh,we could definitely have a good time," she agreed, nodding once again. She hadn't been back to California in a long time, but going back, it would fun. Even more so considering the company she'd have for the trip.

"It was...insane," she admitted with a slight shake of her head. "I mean, there were so many of us and all the fighting and the sibling rivalries. Trying to keep my parents happy," she shruged. "They were pretty strict, but for perfectly good reason! We were a bunch of trouble makers, me and my brothers and sisters." Ginger hadn't really talked much about her family since being in Lawrence. Not the ones back home, in Columbia. She hadn't seen them in a few years. Couldn't now, she supposed and the thought was sort of sad. But it was why she was the way she was with her friends here. So massively overly protective, immediately jumping to defenses... They were her family now and she had grown up so incredibly family oriented.

"I hadn't seen them much after everything with the show in Vegas with Peter picked up. I...guess it's been going on three years now." That realization hit her harder than it should have, but she pushed it aside for the time being.

He listened and watched, and when he saw her expression change he immediately regretted asking. He decided to offer up his own story and then change the subject. He'd talked about some of his friends with others, but not in detail. He thought she probably looked at her friends the same way he looked at his.

"I love my mom, but my childhood pretty much sucked. I look at my friends as my family now. I'd do anything for them, really. They're the people I'm closest to."

She smiled slightly at that comment. "That's how I see my friends as well," she nodded. "I think a lot of people think that way," she admitted, "but I don't think a lot of people would actaully go to the lengeths some of us might for their friends, either." There were always two sides of a coin, right?

When the waiter returned for their order, Ginger gave him hers and when he left again, she looked at Kirk, attention focused on him once again. "So what else is there to know about you, Captain?" she asked curiously.

He grinned. They definitely had more in common than he had thought. That made him like her all that much more.

"Well, that depends," he said with a wider grin. He leaned back in his seat slightly. "I'll answer anything you want to know, as long as you answer one of my questions. Anything at all."

Ginger tilted her head slightly, a curious expression crossng over her features. She would never have guessed, had she known exactly who it was she was chatting up initially, that they would have hit it off and had so much in common like they had, but she definitely wasn't complaining.

"Anything at all?" she repeated, her eyebrows arched in his direction. He didn't know exactly what he was opening himself up to by using those particular words with her. But she supposed he would find out all the same in good time. "Well, we've already covered general childhood stories, let's see, we'll start off easy..."

After a moment's thought, she had something. "You don't really seem the type to embarrass too easily, so...most embarrassing moment?" It was an easy thing to start off what was essentially a round of twenty questions.

"I thought I might get some embarrassing questions," he said with a slight chuckle. "I didn't expect it right off the bat." He thought for a moment. "Probably when I got my first kiss. I had no clue what I was doing, trying to copy the movies my mother liked. She pushed me away and then pointed and laughed. But I won her over, got a second chance and it was much better that time."

He waited to ask her his question until the wine was brought over. "Okay, my turn. In the vein of embarrassing questions, worst date ever."

"Well, now you know better for next time," she smirked slightly as he went into his explanation. She laughed softly at the idea of it, "I think everybody's first kiss has a story like that attached. I was the too-feisty-for-my-own-good kid who decked the boy in the mouth. Oooh, mi madre was so mad that day. There were phone calls from the school and meetings with the other kid's parents. It was terrible."

"Worst date ever?" She repeated, giving a few moments of thought into that. "Prom. Senior Prom, at that. I didn't really know the guy, he was new in town, but I figured why not? I don't know if he was always that clumsy or if he was just super nervous because he thought he was going to get laid that night, I have no idea, but I swear to you, every possible thing that could go wrong was wrong that night." She laughed lightly at the memory. "I had a torn dress before we even got there because it got caught on the car door. Fixed that with some scissors in the girl's room, but I was so mad after that. He had two left feet, couldn't dance to save his life, and he spilled punch on me. Twice."

He chuckled slightly. "Oh, God. That sounds absolutely horrible. I don't think we had a prom my junior year, and my senior year I didn't go. I never really regretted it, and that story just confirmed why. Knowing my luck, if I'd attempted to do that it would have gotten all screwed up."

He looked at her closely. "It's your turn to ask me a question. Just be forewarned that I'll get into the really embarrassing stuff once I have something to drink. Mostly because I tend to ramble if I'm not flirting." He paused. "Of course, I'll probably still flirt with you regardless of how drunk or sober I am. I like flirting with you."

"Are you telling me you weren't always the smooth operator you are now?" she teased, grinning slightly at the thought of the oh-so-slick man before her ever being one of the bumbling types. She couldn't even imagine it, really.

She shook her head, "You haven't rambled yet, doll. Not like what I'm used to anyway. My life is full of ramblers. I'm talking like...full-blown, long, drawn-out, what even is the point of all this, oh wait, there it is, it all circles back around eventually tangent sort of ramblers." Her example a few months ago would have been Andrew or maybe even Stiles, now she wasn't sure who she could point to for that, but it was hardly important at the moment anyway. "Oh, don't worry, I'll flirt right back, no mater my sobriety level either." she assured him with a grin.

"Next question..." she pressed her lips together as she considered it. "If you could have any kind of exotic animal for a pet, what would it be and why?"

He chuckled slightly. "When I was a teenager I was kind of awkward. That first kiss I told you about? I was fifteen when I got it. It wasn't until I was eighteen that I kind of hit my stride. I got a couple guys at the local college who took me under their wing, but generally I just got told to crack jokes and be charming. It helped that I started to do more manual labor where I grew up when I was fifteen. Got a nice set of muscles out of it, which the women seemed to appreciate."

He waited for a moment as the waiter came with their wine. "Scotty rambles sometimes. It's amusing to listen to when it's on a subject that isn't about the ship. The rest of my friends are pretty quiet." He paused. "Well, Spock can get pretty long-winded, and he has a different point of view about things, considering what he is. The whole 'Vulcans can't lie' thing means you get the blunt truth from him pretty much all the time, especially since he also hasn't heard of tact. When he goes on at length there's times I really want to punch him in the mouth. But he's one of my best friends, so I put up with it."

He was quiet for a moment as he thought. "Well, that depends on where I'm living. If I'm still in my apartment in San Francisco or the place here I'd probably want something I could keep in the apartment. An iguana or something, maybe a Komodo dragon. But if it was anything at all? A zebra. They were my favorite animal when I was a kid. I've only ever seen them in books and movies. I've never actually been to a zoo to see one up close."

"I can't picture it." She admitted, with a slight shake of her head. "Now that I could see," she said, smirking slightly at his story about the college boys that gave him tips. She could only imagine how much more detailed they probably actually got with him, but she would just run with what he said.

Ginger took a sip of her wine once it arrived as she listened to him talk about his friends. "I'm pretty much okay with the blunt truth. At least you know he's being honest." She shrugged. Ginger was often the same way, though she would, at times, soften it for her friends and she supposed that wasn't the way it ever was with Kirk's friend from the way he talked about him.

"A Komodo dragon would be epic." She laughed, "Now I'm wondering if you could actually have a zebra as a pet."
